Definitions

  • the invention relates in general to fluid dispensing valves and more particularly to plural discharge condition dispensing valves.
  • Fluid dispensing valves such as for beverages have heretofore been used and the present invention relates to an improvement in providing multiple discharge conditions in a dispensing valve.
  • a typical use for this valve may be such as in soda fountains. wherein a plurality of flavored beverages are desired to be dispensed, each as mixed with pressurized soda water or plain water. Often a limited space is available at such soda fountains for such dispensing valves and it is highly desirable to have a maximum number of fluids dispensed in a minimum of space.
  • the present invention provides for a maximum of six different fluid discharge conditions including mixed fluids and this with a single dispensing valve to use a minimum of space at the soda fountain and to minimize maintenance and cleaning problems. Since only one dispensing valve is utilized, only one valve is needed to be kept in repair and only one valve need be periodically cleaned for sanitation.
  • the invention is an improvement on my Dispensing valve application, Serial No. 694,830, filed November 6, 1957.
  • an object of the invention is to provide a dispensing valve with plural fluid discharge and mixing conditions.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide a dispensing valve which mixes fluid from a common line with fluids from selected ones of a plurality of other lines.
  • Still another object of the invention is to provide a sixin-one dispensing valve having a total of six fluid discharge and mixing conditions.
  • Still another object of the invention is to provide a six-in-one dispensing valve which in a typical use may mix soda water with any one of four different flavoring extracts for four flavored beverages plus a hard and soft soda water discharge condition.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide a dispensing valve wherein a plurality of valve plugs are utilized with three of these plugs connected in series and return to the first of these plugs for a particular fluid discharge condition.
  • Another object of this invention is to provide a dispensing valve with three valve plugs which may be connected in series for a first discharge condition and wherein only two of these valve plugs are connected in series for a second discharge condition.
  • Still another object of the invention is to provide a dispensing valve with three handles each of which has two operative and a neutral position for selecting a total of s'm fluid discharge conditions.

PLURAL DISPENSING VALVE Anthony Turak, 11208 Lorain Ave., Cleveland, Ohio Filed Dec. 30, 1957, Ser. No. 705,970
15 Claims. (Cl. 137-599) The invention relates in general to fluid dispensing valves and more particularly to plural discharge condition dispensing valves.
Fluid dispensing valves such as for beverages have heretofore been used and the present invention relates to an improvement in providing multiple discharge conditions in a dispensing valve. A typical use for this valve may be such as in soda fountains. wherein a plurality of flavored beverages are desired to be dispensed, each as mixed with pressurized soda water or plain water. Often a limited space is available at such soda fountains for such dispensing valves and it is highly desirable to have a maximum number of fluids dispensed in a minimum of space. The present invention provides for a maximum of six different fluid discharge conditions including mixed fluids and this with a single dispensing valve to use a minimum of space at the soda fountain and to minimize maintenance and cleaning problems. Since only one dispensing valve is utilized, only one valve is needed to be kept in repair and only one valve need be periodically cleaned for sanitation.
The invention is an improvement on my Dispensing valve application, Serial No. 694,830, filed November 6, 1957.
Accordingly, an object of the invention is to provide a dispensing valve with plural fluid discharge and mixing conditions.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dispensing valve which mixes fluid from a common line with fluids from selected ones of a plurality of other lines.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a sixin-one dispensing valve having a total of six fluid discharge and mixing conditions.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a six-in-one dispensing valve which in a typical use may mix soda water with any one of four different flavoring extracts for four flavored beverages plus a hard and soft soda water discharge condition.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dispensing valve wherein a plurality of valve plugs are utilized with three of these plugs connected in series and return to the first of these plugs for a particular fluid discharge condition.
Another object of this invention is to provide a dispensing valve with three valve plugs which may be connected in series for a first discharge condition and wherein only two of these valve plugs are connected in series for a second discharge condition.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a dispensing valve with three handles each of which has two operative and a neutral position for selecting a total of s'm fluid discharge conditions.
Other objects and a fuller understanding of this invention may be had by referring to the following description and claims, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 10 is an isometric diagrammatic view of the flow through the dispensing valve.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 show the dispensing valve 15 in the neutral position; namely, wherein all fluid flow is shut off. Figure 2 shows diagrammatically a housing 16 which may enclose the working parts of the dispensing valve and which is preferably readily removable for periodic cleaning. The dispensing valve 15 has a supporting shell 17, a body 18 carried by the shell 17, and with the body 18 containing first and second valve chambers 19 and 20'. First and second valve plugs 21 and 22 are contained in the first valve chamber and a third valve plug 23 is contained in the second valve chamber 20.
First, second, third, fourth, and fifth inlet lines 26 through 30 are carried within the shell 17. A forward extension 31 of the shell provides the terminus for these five inlet lines. Line 28 may be considered a soda Water line or common line and splits into two inlets 28A and 2833 in the forward extension 31.
The body 18 has first and second body halves 35 and 36 with first and second semi-cylindrical surfaces 37 and 38 in the body halves 35 and 36, respectively, with these semi-cylindrical surfaces defining the first valve chamber 19. A U-shaped frame 39 embraces both body halves and is fastened to the forward extension 31 at ears 40 by the screws 41. By the tightening of these screws 41, the body 18 is assembled with the valve plugs 21 and 22 to form a leak-tight connection.
First, second, third, fourth, and fifth conduit means 44 to 48, inclusive, are in the first body half 35 and connect with the correspondingly designated inlet lines 26 through 30. The third conduit means 46 includes conduits 46A and 46B meshing respectively with inlet lines 28A and 28B. The fifth conduit 48 does not go in a straight line through the first body half 35, rather the conduit extends in three mutually perpendicular directions starting at the fifth inlet line 30 and terminating in a plane containing the terminating ends of all five conduit means 44 through 48 which plane is a diametral plane, horizontal as the valve 15 is normally used, through the first valve chamber 19. The fifth conduit means is formed by drilling intersecting bores in the first body half 35 with the exterior ends of these bores on the side of the valve 15 being closed as by the plug 49. The first conduit means 44- connects with the first inlet line 26 in a manner similar to that shown for the connection of the fifth conduit means 48; namely, by mutually perpendicular intersecting bores so that the first conduit means 44 terminates in the diametral plane of the first valve chamber 19.
The first valve plug contains first, second, and third bore means 51, 52, and 53 which selectively may mesh with the first, second, and third conduit means 44, 45, and 46. The second valve plug 22 contains a part of the third bore means 53 and also contains fourth and fifth bore means 54 and 55 for selective meshingwith the fourth and fifth conduit means 47 and 48. The third bore means 53 is partially in the first and second valve plugs 21 and 22, and in the first valve plug 21 it includes a by-pass passageway 58.
Figure 6 shows sections through the first valve plug 21 with this valve plug in a neutral position and shows an axial bore 59 as a part of the third bore means 53. The third bore means also includes radial bores 61 to 65, inclusive, as best shown in Figure 6. The sections of the valve plug 21, as shown in Figure 6, are as viewed from the side of the valve shown in Figure 2.
Figure 7 shows vertical sections through the valve plug 22 at the various bores therein and the third bore means 53 is shown in the right-most section of Figure 7. This third bore means in the second valve plug 22 includes an axial bore 66 axially aligned with the bore 59 in the first valve plug 21 and includes bores 67 and 68 and return bore 69.
A first handle 71 is connected to rotatively position the first valve plug 21 and a second handle 72 is connected to rotatively position the second valve plug 22.
The second body half 36 includes conduits which may selectively mesh with the bores in the valve plugs 21 and 22. These conduits include a conduit 73 which may mesh with the first bore means 51 when the first handle 71 has moved to a first operative position 71A, as shown in Figure 2. In such case the first bore 51, as seen in Figure 6, would be horizontal to provide fluid passage from the first inlet line 26 through the first valve plug 21 to the conduit 73. The conduit 73 has'a right angle bend and discharges downwardly through an outlet 74, as seen in Figure 2, to the discharge opening 75 of the entire dispensing valve 15. Similarly, conduits 76, 77, and 78 may selectively mesh with the second, fourth, and fifth bore means 52, 54, and 55, and each has a downwardly directed outlet leading to the discharge opening 75. A conduit 79 may selectively mesh with the by-pass passageway 58 of the third bore means when the first valve plug 21 is in the neutral position. This conduit 79 leads to the second valve chamber 20. The second valve plug 23 in this chamber 20 contains passageway means 80 which is generally T-shaped and which directs fluid from the conduit 79 into either a return conduit 81 or into a discharge conduit 82. The discharge conduit 82 connects to a discharge tube 83 which goes directly to the discharge opening 75 of the valve 15, and by-passes a diffuser 84. In the neutral position shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, none of the conduits and passageways are in mesh and hence fluid flow therethrough is shut 01f.
A third handle 85 is connected to operate the third valve plug 23. Figure shows generally the operative connection wherein a set screw 86 connects the handle 85 to a sleeve 87. This sleeve has a tapered shoulder 88 which bears against the interior surface of a tapered aperture 89 in the forward end of the frame 39. A valve stem 90 is received within the sleeve 87 and has a cylindrical shoulder 91 receivable within a like shoulder in the sleeve 87. A diametrical slot 92 receives a bar 93 connected to the third valve plug 23. The valve stem 90 is internally threaded at 94 to receive a cone point set screw 95 which may be adjusted to bear against the cone point recess in the bar 93 so as to press the flat face 97 of the valve plug 23 against the bottom of the third valve chamber 2!) to form a fluid-tight seal. A locking set screw 98 is received within the threads 94 to lock in place the set screw 95.
Operation The first handle 71 may be moved to a first operative position, as shown at the phantom position 71A in Figure 2, whereat the first valve plug 21 would be rotated about thirty degrees. This permits the first inlet line to be opened through the first bore 51 to the discharge opening 75 of the valve 15. Simultaneously, the third inlet line or soda line is open through line 28A, conduit 46A, bore 61, and bore 63 to a body outlet in the space between the lower portions of the body halves and 36. The soda water then flows over the difiuser 84 to the discharge opening 75. If a flavored syrup is supplied through the first inlet line 26, it will mix with the soda and be washed down by the soda from the diffuser 84 to pass the intermixed discharge out the discharge opening 75. This could provide an intermixed beverage such as ginger ale from a mixture of soda water and flavoring syrup or extract.
With the first handle 71 moved to a second operative position 71B, as also shown in phantom in Figure 2, the second bore means 52 is placed in a horizontal position to provide fluid communication from the second inlet line 27 through conduit 76 to the discharge opening 75. Soda water is also admitted from the third inlet line 28 through bores 62 and 65 through the body outlet and the diffuser 84 to the discharge opening 75. This would again provide intermixed discharge of two fluids; namely, from inlet lines 27 and 28. With the first handle 71 in a neutral position, as shown in full lines in Figure 12, fluid communication of the first and second lines 26 and 27 is shut ofi and the by-pass passageway 58 registers with the inlet line 28A and the conduit 79.
The second handle 72 also has first and second operative positions 72A and 72B, as shown in Figure 10, and in the first operative position 72A there is intermixed discharge of fluids from the third and fifth inlet lines 28 and 30. As seen in Figure 7, with this valve plug 22 rotated approximately thirty degrees counterclockwise, the fifth bore 55 and the bore 67 will both be horizontal for registry with the fifth and third inlet lines. Soda water or other fluid in the third inlet line 28 will thus pass through the bore 67 into the axial bores 66 and 59 and pass downwardly through the bore 64 to the body outlet and through the diffuser 84 to the discharge opening 75.
With the second handle 72 in the second operative A position 72B, the valve plug 22 is rotated approximately thirty degrees clockwise, as seen in Figure 7, whereat bore 54 will be in' registry with the inlet line 47 and the conduit 77. Also, the bore 68 will be in registry with the third conduit 46B and fluid flow will pass through axial bores 66 and 59 and bore 64 through the diffuser 84 to the discharge opening 75. With the second handle 72 in the neutral position, as shown in full lines in Figure 1, the return bore 69 will register with the return conduit 81 and the bores 67 and 68 will be out of registry with the third conduit 46B.
With the first and second handles 71 and 72 in the neutral position, conduits and passageways are in registry to permit discharge of fluid from the third inlet line as controlled by the third handle 85 and third valve plug 23. Figure 10 diagrammatically illustrates the flow as controlled by this third valve plug 23. With the handles 71 and 72 in neutral position, fluid from the third inlet line 28 is through the by-pass passageway 58 and the conduit 79 to the third valve plug 23. When this valve plug 23 is in the neutral position, as shown in Figure 4, fluid flow is shut oif. However, when the third handle 85 is moved to the first operative position 85A, as shown in Figure 10, then fluid is directed by the T-shaped passageway means to the return conduit 81 and return bore 69 to the axial bores 66 and 59. This fluid from the third line then passes through bore 64 and difiuser 84 to the discharge opening 75. With soda water as this third fluid, this gives a soft soda discharge condition since the diffuser breaks up the soda water and permits the bubbles of gas to form in the soda water as it is dispensed from the valve 15.
In this soft soda discharge condition it is noted that there is connected in series three valve plugs and then again the first of this series of three. This series connection is through the first valve plug 21, the third valve plug 23, and the second valve plug 22, and then returned to the first valve plug 21. This series connection includes the first bore 58, the passageway 80, the return bore 69, the axial bores 66 and 59, and the bore 64. It will be noted that the first and second valve plugs 21 and 22 can control this discharge because each of these valve plugs must be in the neutral position in order to permit this fluid flow. Also, the fact that this particular fluid discharge condition passes in series through three valve plugs to return to the first valve plug of the series is a reason why such a compact, complete dispensing valve 15 is created by the invention with a total of only five inlet lines, yet with a total of six different fluid discharge conditions, four of which are intermixed discharge of two fluids.
With the third handle 85 moved to the second operative position 85B, which is at right angles to the positions shown in Figure 10, fluid from the third inlet line 28 enters the T-shaped passageway 80 and is directed into the discharge conduit 82 and through the discharge tube 83 directly to the discharge opening 75. In such case the diffuser 84 is by-passed and the third fluid is directed in a hard or concentrated stream. This discharge condition is used in soda fountains, for example, in mixing ice cream sodas.
Another feature of the invention is that the complete dispensing valve 15 may be used in many different environments with only a minimum of change. The first valve plug 21 may be considered to be a master valve plug and the second valve plug 22 may be considered a subordinant valve plug. Figures 8 and 9 show additional secondary plugs 22A and 228, respectively, which may replace the second valve plug 22 of Figure 7 for different fluid discharge conditions. Such replacement by either valve plug 22A or 22B still retains a total of six fluid discharge conditions of the valve 15. The valve, as previously described, might be used with flavoring syrup sup ply sources connected to the first, second, fourth, and fifth inlet lines 26, 27, 29, and 30, and with soda water connected to the third inlet line 28. When the secondary valve plug 22A is substituted for valve plug 22, the fourth inlet line 29 may be connected to a source of plain water. The valve plug 22A has a fifth bore 55A to selectively mesh with the conduit 43. It also has bores 101 and 102 to selectively mesh with the fourth conduit 47. It will be noted that the axial bore 66A of this valve plug 22A has been axially lengthened to provide communication between boxes 101, 102, and 69 as well as communication with the axial bore 59 of the first valve plug 21. With this secondary valve plug 22A in place in cooperation with the first valve plug 21, plain Water from the fourth inlet line 29, in the first operative position 72A of the second handle 72, will pass through bore 101, axial bores 56A and 59, and bore 64 to the discharge opening 75. Thus, plain water only is dispensed. In the second operative position 72B of the second handle 72, bore 55A communicates with the fifth conduit 48 to pass a flavored syrup to the discharge opening 75, and simultaneously bore 102 is in registry with the conduit 47 to pass water through the diffuser S4 to the discharge opening 75. This provides a mixture of flavored syrup and plain water for a non-carbonated beverage. Thus, with this second valve plug 22A in use, the valve 15 will dispense a total of two carbonated beverages, one carbonated beverage, plain water, and hard and soft soda.
The Figure 9 shows another secondary valve plug 228 which may be substituted in place of valve plug 22. This valve plug 22B also has the lengthened axial bore 66A, the return bore 59, and the bore 101. It does not have a bore corresponding to bore 192 of valve plug 22A, but it does have the bore 55A for selective communication with the fifth conduit 48. A bore m3 is provided in the diametral plane of bore as for selective meshing with the conduit 4613. With the handle 72 in the first operative position 72A, bore 101 will register with the conduit 47 for a plain water discharge condition of the valve. With the handle 72 moved to the second operative position 7213,
bore 55A passes fluid from the fifth conduit 48 and bore 163 passes fluid, such as soda Water, from the third inlet line 28 through the diffuser 84 to the discharge opening 75. This provides discharge of a carbonated beverage. With this valve plug 22B in use together with the master valve plug 21, the valve 15 provides for control of discharge of three carbonated beverages, one plain water, and hard and soft soda.
Although this invention has been described in its preferred form with a certain degree of particularity, it is understood that the present disclosure of the preferred form has been made only by way of example and that numerous changes in the details of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
