JEAN PIERRE' COTIART, OF HAVANA, CUBA.
i FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,7-68, dated April 29, 18784.
Application filed April l0, 1883. (No modcl.) Patented in England February 3, 1883, No. 590, and in France February 16, 1883,
, v No. 141,458. v v v T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEAN PIERRE Corninr, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Havana, in the Island of Cuba and Kingdom of Spain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent of Great Britain, No. 590, bearing date February 3, 1883,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in furnaces for raising steam, or other heating purposes 5 and the object of my improvements is to construct furnaces in which green sugarcane refuse, sawdust, and other waste material may be consumed without previous drying, thus turning rubbish to protable account and utilizing it for raising steam or other heating purposes.
To this end my improvements consist in eertain novel devices and combinations, hereinafter fully set forth. l
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section; Fig. 2, a sectional plan Fig. 3, a transverse section; Fig. 4, a -front elevation of a furnace embodying my invention, and Fig. 5 a plan of a portion of one of the layers of fire-bars.
The exterior wall, a,'of the furnace is constructed, preferably, of refractory-materialsuch as nre-brick or silica-and the fire-bridge b, which is built higher than usual, has its upper end inclined,`projecting upward and toward the fire-doors of the furnace, in order that it may deflect the flame and heat upon the material to be consumed, and thus assist combustion. The fire-bars are arranged in two separate inclined layers, the upper, c, being nearest the fire-doors, and the lower, d, interposed between the former and the fire-bridge. Each of these layers is supported at the .end nearest the fire-doors by rollers e and f, which extend across the inside of the furnace, and are carried by movable brackets e and f which are secured to shafts c2 and f2, respectively. The shafts c2 f2 have each a worm-wheel at one end, which gears into a worm, and thus enables the fireman readily to raise or lower the firebars c and Z into any required position; or, instead of employing worms and worm-wheels,
the fire-bars may be raised or lowered by means of balance-weights, or in any other convenient manner, so as to be accomplished smoothly and with out undue friction. The upper shaft, e2, is mounted in bearings in a boX-girder frame, g, the lower part of which frame forms the lintel for the doors Zz at the front of the furnace. By this arrangement the shaft e2 may be easily removed when desired. The lower shaft, f2,
is made in two pieces coupled together, to fa. Y
which are closed after its entrance by means The opposite ends of the reof counter-weights Z', (see Fig. 3,) and falls on` the inclined layers of nre-bars c and d, to be consumed. Suitable feed mechanism should v be added above the doors Z, to enable the material which is to be consumed to be readily supplied in proper quantities.
When it is desired to clean out the furnace and Vremove the ashes, the tumbling-plate k (which is secured to a shaft, k, having bearings in wall-boxes 7c3) may be lowered by meansV of a worm-wheel keyed or secured to the shaft k2, and actuated by a hand-wheel, 195, from the outside of the furnace by a worm at the end of a shaft, kt, and the ashes can then be withdrawn from the Vfurnace through one of the front doors, 7L. Small sections of grid-plates m are suspended from the stationary bearingbar Z, inorder to admit air, and thereby assist combustion, and also to prevent thegreen sugar-cane or other refuse from working out at the back of the layer of fire-bars d.
Steam-blast pipes n are placed on either side of the furnace, and are arranged, preferably, in the manner shown in Fig. 4. These steamblasts increase the draft, and thus insure the rapidity of combustion necessary for burning sawdust, green refuse, and other waste material without previous drying.
I use, by preference, tWo inclined layers of heating purposes, the combination, substanire-bars; but I do not confine myself to that tially as set forth, of a layer of nre-bars, a staor any other number of layers. tionary bearer supporting one end of said. ire- I 5 I claim as my invention and desire to secure bars, and a raising and lowering shaft connect- 5 by Letters Patented by bracket-arms to a roller which supports l.
