Description

March 21, 1961 H. G. PAYNTON, SR
ARCHERY PACKAGE Filed March 26, 1959 INVENTOR #4442243 6'. P4 v/vro/vz BY wwzw K M ATTORNEY United States Patent C) F ARCHERY PACKAGE Harold G. Paynton, Sr., 39 Clark St., Manasquan, NJ.
Filed Mar. 26, 1959, Ser. No. 802,121 10 Claims. (Cl. 206-4534) The present invention relates generally to an improved multi-purpose package, and in particular it relates to an improved package for a bow, arrows and accessory equipment.
It is conventional to package bows and arrows separately, in disposable receptacles which serve no purpose other than that of a temporary protective cover to facilit-ate the storage, shipping and sale of the bows and arrows. A quiver is generally a necessary accessory in the use of a bow and arrows, for keeping the arrows at hand prior to their use. Thus, there are normally sold at the same time a bow, arrows and a quiver, all of which are usually separately pack-aged in disposable containers or wrapping material, which increase the cost of the combination while greatly detracting from the con venience in handling same.
It is, therefore, a principal object of the present invention to provide an improved multi-purpose package.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved multi-purpose receptacle enclosing a bow and arrows.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide an improved multi-purposereceptacle enclosing a bow and arrow, which receptacle is quickly and easily convertible for use as a quiver. I
Afurther object of the present invention is to provide an improved multi-purpose package of the above nature characterized by simplicity in the formation thereof, its low cost and ease of use.
The above and other objects of the present invention will become apparent from a reading of the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of an improved multi-purpose package embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a top perspective view of a sheet employed in constructing the improved package;
Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of the casing or receptacle;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 in Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a quiver formed from the improved package;
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the quiver support loop assembly;
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the support loop and mounting band structure;
:Figure 8 is an exploded perspective view of another form of casing accordingto the present invention; and
Figure 9 is a transverse sectional view thereof, similar to Figure 4.
In a sense, the present invention contemplates the provision of an improved multi-purpose package of the character described comprising a hollow cylindrical casing including a longitudinally extending tubular member formed of a severable material and end walls closing said tubular member, a bow, arrows and associated archery equipment located in and extending longitudinally of said Patented Mar. 21, 1961 "ice casing and a loop member afiixed to the wall of said tubular member between the ends thereof.
According to one form of the present invention, the tubular member is formed of a coiled sheet of organic thermoplastic material, the longitudinal borders of which are in overlapping relationship. The end walls are defined by discs having upstanding lips and nesting in the opposite ends of the tubular member and secured thereto by suitable fasteners. Located substantially intermediate the ends of the tubular member are a pair of longitudinally spaced, pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes which encircle the tubular member. There are provided a pair of loops, end portions of which are fastened to the respective tapes and sandwiched between the tapes and the tube wall. A bow, a supply of arrows and, optionally, additional archery accessories may be located in the tubular member. Thus, the package may be opened and access to the contents thereof afforded by severing the tubular wall along one or more peripheral lines between the tapes to divide the casing into a pair of quivers which may then be carried or worn on the person by way of the loops, and to provide, as desired, an arm guard.
Referring now to the drawing and partially to Figures 1 through 7 thereof, which illustrate one embodiment of the present invention, reference numeral 10 generally designates an improved package comprising a casing 12 which contains a bow 14, and a plurality of arrows 16, which are longitudinally arranged in the package. Casing 12 includes an elongated tubular member 18 of circular cross-section and walls 20 closing the ends of the tubular member 18. Tubular member 18 is formed of a rectangular sheet 22 of flexible self-supporting material, preferably a transparent organic thermoplastic material such as cellulose acetate, polystyrene, Saran, nylon or the like, and may have impressed therein a pair of longitudinally-spaced, parallel, transversely extending lines of weakness or score lines 24 which are located substantially intermediate the ends of sheet 22. Lines 24, 24may be merely imprinted on the surface of the sheet. A pair of transversely aligned openings 23 are formed in sheet 22 adjacent opposite longitudinal edges thereof between score lines 24. Sheet 22 is coiled about a longitudinal axis, and the borders thereof are brought into overlapping abutment to form tube 18.
In order to maintain sheet 22 in its tubular configuration, there is provided a pair of flexible bands 26 of adhesive tape having coatings 28 of a pressure sensitive adhesive on their underfaces, the bands being preferably formed of an organic thermoplastic material such as nylon or the like. A loop 30 is formed of a band of woven cloth or other suitable material by folding the band along its medial transverse axis and bringing ends 32 thereof in superposition. Superposed band ends 32 are located across the adhesive-carrying face of tape 26, extending transversely thereof, and are secured to tape 26 by clinched staples 34. Bands 26 encircle tubular member 18 at longitudinally-spaced, peripheral areas located longitudinally outwardly of and adjacent to lines 24. Ba'nds 26 extend across the exposed longitudinal edge of sheet 22 and the face 28 thereof firmly adheres to the outer face of coiled sheet 22 to maintain it in the form of tubular member 18. Sandwiched and embraced between the tape 26 and the wall of the tubular member 18 are the loop ends 32, loops 30 being each inwardly longitudinally directed. a v
Each of end walls 20 may be formed of a light gauge sheet metal and includes a disc shaped base portion 36 and anupstanding peripheral flange or lip 38. It should be noted that. the lip 38 may be advantageously formed of a material other than metal, such as cardboard, plasticmateria-l, or the like. Walls 20 are nested in he e d at hefiubu r member is, lips as beingmut:
3 wardly directed and abutting the inner face of the tube 18. Securing end walls 20 to tubular member 18 are a plurality of clinched staples or other suitable fasteners engaging lips 38 and the wallof the tubular member 18. The packaging is preferably efiectedby assembling tubular member 18, loop carrying tapes 26 and oneof the end walls 29,- leaving the opposite end of tubular member 18 open. The bow and arrows 14 and 16, and, if desired, an arm band or string, or other archery accessories, are inserted through the open end of tubular member 18 and the remaining end wall 26 applied and aflixed thereto as foresaid to enclose the contents within the container thus formed.
In opening and employing the improved multi-purpose package, the tubular member 18 is severed along lines 12 byemploying a sharp instrument such as a knife, razor or the like. The end sections 42 and intermediate section 44 are then separated and the contents of the package removed. The end sections 42 each define a quiver, as illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawing, which may be used in the conventional manner. Moreover, the intermediate section 44, which can be readily uncoiled, may be employed as an arm or wrist guard in the well known manner by passing a band or string through one or both openings 23 and employing the band or string as securing means.
The sheet 22 may be colorless or colored, transparent or opaque and may be suitably decorated and imprinted in any desirable manner. Furthermore, the. longitudinal overlapping borders of the sheet 18 may be additionally secured to each other, if desired, by heat sealing, a longitudinally extending adhesive tape, or other fastening arrangement.
The embodiment of the present invention, illustrated in Figures 8 and 9 of the drawings, differs from that above described principally in that the casing member 48 is formed of an extruded thermoplastic tube, and in other details. In addition to instructions and other legends, there is imprinted or formed on the tubular casing member 48, a pair of longitudinally-spaced, en-- circling cut guide linesor lines of weakness 50, located substantially intermediate the ends of tubular member; 48, and a guide line 52 extending longitudinally of tubular member 48 between lines 50. Additionally, circle or dot. guides 54, 54 may be imprinted or impressed on opposite sides of guide line 52, to locate the position of openings which can readily be. made through the material through which a band or string may be passed so that this medial portion of tubularmember 48 can serve as an arm orwrist band. The end walls 20, and bands 26 and loops'30 are assembled: and the packaging of the bows and arrows as in the earlier embodiment. The package device is employed in the manner previously set forth; The intermediate section delineated by the lines :50 may be longitudinally slit and employed as an arm guard as desired.
While there have been illustrated and described pre ferred embodiments of the present invention, it is apparent that numerous alterations, omissions and additions may be made without departing from the spirit thereof.
