SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,488, dated April 22, 1884.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE BECKER, of Lancaster, Fairfield county-Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grain- Drills, of which the following is a specification.
. My invention comprises means for the more perfect regulation of the seed-delivery of those grain-drills in which a fluted feed-wheel is caused to revolve within the closely-inclosing passage-walls of a cup or funnel, and c0mprises a construction of such cup in which that part of the cupwall which is on the receiving side of the feed-wheel is fitted for adjustmentlongitudinally of said wheel on the rear wall, the cup being divided on a vertical line following the rear curve of the feed-wheel. The stationary and the movable parts of the cup are each provided with a wing-extension that is flush with the feedwheels periphery, in order to permit such shift of the cup-wall without spillage of its contents.
It will be seen that the feed-wheel in my present improvement is capable of rotary motion only.
My invention further comprises a peculiarly constructed and attached shiftable deliveryspout.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view ofa grain-delivering mechanism embodying my improvements, the shiftable member of the cup being shown separate. The drawings show one of aseries of graincups of identical form, and of which each consists of two sections or membersto wit, a sta-' tionary section, B, and a shiftable section, E, divided from the stationary section on a vertical line following the periphery of the feedwheel and slidable on the former. The stationary section B, preferably in two parts, as represented, furnishes journal-bearing to the feed-wheel O and has the delivery-nozzle D. The section B is permanently fastened to the under side of the floor A, as shown, and has two checks, 1) I), of which the cheek b has on the side next the shiftable section a semicircular contour flush with the periphery of the feed-whee], as at Z), and the cheek b has on the same side a semicircular contour flush with the bottoms of the flutings, as at b, whence it extends obliquely outward by a chamfer, I), to a wing, F, whose semi-cylindrical convexity is flush with the feed-wheels periphery.

The shiftable section E, which constitutes the supply-funnel, has a wing, G, and a check, G, whose cylindrical concavities fit and slide upon the corresponding convexities of cheek b and wing F of the stationary cup-section B. A square (or other non-circular) eye in wheel 0 receives the correspondingly-shaped driveshaft H, whose rotation is secured by any customary connection withaground-wheel. The
shiftable section E of each cup has a stud, I,
which enters an orifice, j, in a bar, J a handle, j, on one or both extremities of which enables the said bar and its entire series of attached cup-sections to be shifted to the right or to the left, so as to expose more or less of the feed-wheel flutings, and to thus increase or diminish the feed action. In these adjustments the office of the wing F on the stationary cup-section will be seen to be to prevent the escape of grain from that portion of the shifting sect-ion which is for the time being thrown beyond the feed-wheel and its inclosing-cheek; and the offlce of the wing G on the shiftable cup-section will be seen to be to out off or render inoperative the whole or any portion of the feed-wheel flutings. For example, when shifted to the extreme left, section E is brought opposite the cylindrical surface of the stationary wing F, which then operates to completely close the delivery. (See Fig. 4.)
It will be seen that the entire section of cup which gives journal-bearing to the feed-wheel is stationary and has a stationary guard-win g, and that the shifting action is restricted to the funnel or supply-section having a movable guard-wing; that said winged funnel is operated independently of both drive-shaft and feed-wheel, and that the capacity for delivery of the fluted wheel may be varied without affecting those of the supply and discharge passages with which said wheel co-opcrates.
The stationary member of the feed-cup has two projecting hooks,'d cl, which, being suc cessively passed through notch or gate 70' in flange 7c of delivery-spout K, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, cause the suspension of said spout, either obliquely rearward for rear delivery, as shown in Fig. 1, and in the rear rank of delivery-spouts in Fig. 10, or obliquely forward for front delivery, as shown in the front rankof delivery-spouts in the same figure. This arrangement renders the device readily applicable to such two-rank drills, as illustrated in said figure.
It is obvious that any one or all the spouts are of easy attachment, presentation, or removal at will.
I claim as new and of my invention- 1. In a grain-drill, the combination, with a fluted feed-wheel, of a cup having two winged sectionsto wit, one fixed section, B, in which said wheel is journa1ed,andhavinga deliveryspout, D, and one shiftable section, E, which constitutes the supplyfunnel to said feedwheel, and whose capacity and that of said delivery-nozzle remain unaffected by changes in capacity of the feed-wheelthe whole being constructed and operated substantially as set forth.

3. In a grain-drill, the described combination, with a fluted feed-wheel, of a grain-cup having a fixed section in two parts, and a shiftable section, a guard-wing on the fixed section, and a groove or recess in the rear of said section, and a guard-wing on the shiftable section, the latter being supported in the groove or recess, as set forth.
4. In a grain-drill, the described combina' tion, with a fluted feed-wheel, C, of a graincup composed of two sectionsto wit, a sta tionary section, l3,which affords journal-bearing tosaid feedwheel, and has a guard-wing, F, whose cylindrieally-convex surface is flush with the feed-wheels periphery, and a shiftable section, E, which has a cylindrically-concave wing, G, adapted to fit and slide upon said wing F--in the manner set forth, and for the purpose explained. 5. In a grain-drill, the described combination, with a fluted feed-wheel, of a cup composed of two sectionsone fixed, the other slidablea projection on the rear of the fixed section, and a projection or hook on the front thereof, for the purpose set forth.
6. The delivery-spout having exterior flange formed with a gate or recess, for the purpose set forth.
7. In a grain-drill, the combination. with the delivery-nozzle D of the cup. of the hooks cl (1, and separable and reversible deliveryspout having exterior flange, 75, formed with gate or recess k, substantially as set forth.
