To all whom it may 00ncern Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. HUNTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tifton, in the county of Tift and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Seeders and Guano-Distributers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined seeders and guano distributers.
One object of the invention is the provision of a combined seeder and guano distributer which is of such nature that the hopper can be removed therefrom and the device used as a cultivator.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus such as described in which means is embodied for forcing the feed from the hopper into the distributing tubes.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus such as described in which a vibratory hopper is used and in which means is provided for limiting the movement of said hopper.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus such as described in which a plurality of distributing tubes are used in which corrugated plates are mounted for the purpose of mixing seed and mixing the same with the guano which feeds into said tubes.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for imparting a vibratory movement to the hopper upon the movement of the apparatus in one direction, the said means for imparting the vibratory movement being so constructed that upon movement of the machine in a reverse direction, the hopper will be held stationary.
A further object of the invention is to improve and simplify an apparatus of this character, rendering it comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture. reliable and efficient in use and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of the present applica tion and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the hopper shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 33, of Fig. 2. sectional view taken on the line l-4, of Fig. 8, and Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the gates which control the seed compartment.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by suitable characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally my improved seeder and guano distributer which consists preferably of a yoke 11, to the rear end of which are attached downwardly curved cultivator teeth 12. The forward end of this yoke is mounted upon a guide wheel 13, to one side of which is rotatably attached a plate 14 provided with equally spaced laterally extending lugs or projections 15. Angle braces 16 connect the upper edges of the yoke 11 and secured thereto at the opposite ends of the same are brackets 17, each comprising horizontal bars 18 and front extensions 19 and rear extensions 20. These extensions 20 are arranged in parallel vertical relation and to the same are secured the usual handles 21. The arms 20 are forked, as at 22, and receive the supporting rod 23 of a rocking hopper 2-1. This supporting rod is held in the forked ends 22 of the arms 20 by nuts or other suitable fastening devices such as shown at 25.
The hopper 24 is divided by a transverse partition 26 into a forward guano compartment 27 and a rear seed compartment 28. The seed compartment 28 is provided with a false bottom 29 under which the guano is fed to the rear of the machine through openings 30 provided at the lower end of the partition 26 and which are closed by suitable gates 31. The rear wall of the hopper 24; is provided with openings 32 which are closed by gate-ways 33, each of which comprises a pair of plates 34 and 35, the latter of which is notched at its lower end so that when the plate 34 is slidably adjusted thereon, the size of the openings through which the seed passes can Fig. 4 is a transversev be adjusted. A transverse rod 35 is journaled in the rear of the seed compartment 28 and has secured thereto a plurality of rigid arms 35 which cooperate with the openings 32 and serve to force the seed therethrough upon the movement of the arm 36. In order to cause the partial rotation of this red 35, the opposite ends thereof are effect, as at 3'6, and connected by links 37 to the before described handles 21 so that as the hopper 24 vibrates, the rod 35 will be given partial rotations forcing the arms 35 to andfrom the openings 32 and obviously forcing the seed therethrough. From the openings 32 the seed flows through guideways 38 into the discharge or distributing tubes 39 in the rear of the cultivator teeth-12.
Each of the tubes 39 is provided at its rear side with a corrugated plate 40 over which the seed pass, and as the seed and guano flow through these tubes 39, the corrugations obviously thoroughly mix the same.
In order to provide for the vibratory movement of the hopper 24, an operating bar 41 is slidably mounted in guides 42 secured to the underside of the hopper. The forward end of the bar 41 is provided with a head 43 adapted to lie in the path of the projections 15 of the plates 14 so that as the wheel rotates, the forward end of this rod will be raised and lowered, car rying with it the hopper which is pivoted upon the rod 23, obviously giving a vibratory movement to the same. In order to steady this vibratory movement, aspring 44 is connected at one end to the forward side of the hopper 24 and its opposite end to the draft attachment 45 which is secured to the yoke 11 by means of the brackets or connecting plates 46. A spring 47 is attached to the bar 41 and the arm 19 of the bracket 17 and serves to yieldingly retain the bar 41 in its normal position. The
length of this bar 41 may be adjusted by means of the pins 48 provided at its rear extremity. Obviously as the machine is moved forwardly, the rotation of the wheel 15 causes the forward end of the bar to be raised upwardly, consequently raising with 'it the forward end of the hopper 24, and
as the head 43 slides off of each projection 15, the forward end of the hopper will be lowered by means of the spring 44.
In order to limit the vibratory movement of the hopper 24, a pair of bars 49 are pivoted at their outer ends to connecting plates 50carried by the under side of the hopper. The inner ends of these bars 49 are pivoted, as at 52, to a link 53 which in turn is pivoted at its rear extremity to an adjusting lever 54. This lever 54 is pivoted substantially intermediateits ends, as at 55, to a bracket 56, the upper end of which is offset, as at 57, and formed with a slot 58. A locking device 59 passes through from the end of the lever 54 and through the slot 58 serving to retain the lever 54 in its adjusted positions. The ends of the bars 49 are arranged in the path of the arms 20 so as to engage the same and limit the movement of the hopper in corresponding relation to the adjusted position of the lever 54.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that a combined seeder and guano distributer is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim is 1. The combination in an apparatus such as described, of a supporting frame, brackets secured thereto and including upright arms, a hopper supported by said upright arms, bars pivoted to the hopper and having their ends disposed in the path of said upright arms, and means for adjusting the bars relative to the hopper and the arms for limiting the movement of the hopper.
2. In an apparatus such as described, the combination with a supporting frame, of brackets secured thereto and including upright arms, a hopper pivoted to said upright arms, bars pivoted to the under side of said hopper and having their ends arranged in the path of the upright arms, a link pivoted to said bars, a lever pivoted to the hopper and to said link, and means for adjustably securing the lever and adjusting the position of the bars relative to the upright arms and hopper.
