To @ZZ whom) it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB HECKENLIVELY, of Eureka, in the county of Greenwood and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Irnproved. Motor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive, and practical motor for driving pumps, saws, and other machinery.
The invention consists of acontrivance of a drum from which is suspended, by a cord or chain, a weight, which descends by its gravity to unwind the cord or chain and give motion to a train of gears, which drive a shaft carrying a cam\vheel,with which a machine may directly be connected by a pitman, a suitable governor device being provided to press a brake-lever against the cam-wheel to control the speed ofthe motor and connected machinery, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

To any suitable frame or base, a, I tix bearings b b, c c, and cl d, in which are journaled, respectively, the shafts e f g. A drum, h, is mounted rigidly on shaft e, and around the drum a rope or chain, t', is wound, which carries at one end the weighty'. The drumh has fixed to it the ratchet-wheel k, with which a pawl, l, pivoted. to alarge gear-wheel, fm, may loe thrown into gear, to cause wheel m, which is mounted loosely on shaft e, to be revolved by the unwinding of drum h by the uncoiling of its rope or chain t', by the gravity of the descending weight j. This arrangement permits shaft e to be turned backward by its hand-crank e', to coil the rope on the drum without effect on wheel m or its connected gearing; and as the rope t' unwinds, the pawl yengages the ratchet to drive wheel m, as will readily be understood. The gear-wheel m meshes with a pinion, a, fast on shaft f, to which pinion a or shaft f is fixed a large gearwheel, o, which in turn meshes with a pinion, p, fast on the shaft g, which is the drivingshaft of the motor, and transmits the power to a pump, q, or other machinery to be driven.
The letter r indicates a cam-wheel having a zigzag or star-shaped cam-groove, s, therein, in which the pin or anti-friction roller t on the end ofthe pitman u engages for reciprocating the pump piston or plunger, the pitman being suitably guidedin ways o, fixed to the base or frame of the machine. The camgroove may be arranged in one or more convolutions to cause one or more strokes of the pitman for each revolution of shaft g and Wheel r, according to the required speed of the machine to be driven. In the example shown the cam-groove is shaped to give six strokes of the pitman to one revolution of the drivingshaft. The pitman may be guided to Work horizontallyas well as vertically, or at any desired inclination, as circumstances may require for any special Work to be done.
For a governor device, to automatically control the speed of the motor and machinery driven thereby within safe limits, I fix on shaft g the pulley w, around which a belt, x, passes to a pulley, y, on a vertical shaft, e, which has along bearing, for steadiness, in the base ci, and carries ixedly a large grooved wheel, a', from which a belt, b', passes around a grooved pulley, c', on the upright shaft d', which carries the toggle-jointed and weighted arms of an ordinary ballgovernor, f', the sleeve g of which is connected to the end of a brake-lever, h', which passes along beneath the periphery of cam-wheel r, the lever h being curved in about the same radius as the edge of the wheel, and then pivoted at i to a standard rising from base a, or to the base itself.
