Claims. (Cl. 206-79) This invention relates to merchandising and more particularly to an article holder of the platform type which may be conveniently utilized in boxes or other packages to support and display articles in an attractive and efficient manner.
Numerous types of article holders or supports for packages have heretofore been proposed and utilized, but many of these were of necessity, designed to be utilized in a particular shape and size of box or other package and consequently where different sizes of boxes were to be utilized, it was necessary to procure and have on hand article holders of varying sizes to fit different boxes. Furthermore, many of these devices were in the form of article separators which did not operate to securely hold the articles in position in the boxes or other containers and furthermore, in many instances, the article holders were not suitable for manufacture by a single blank cutting operation and furthermore, could not be supplied in the form of fiat blanks which could be conveniently manipulated to form the article holder.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a one-piece platform type article holder which may be conveniently and economically manufactured from suitable material, such as cardboard by a single stamping operation.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a one-piece platform type article holder which may be conveniently supplied as a fiat blank and thereafter erected to form the article holder by a simple manual manipulation of the blank.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a one-piece platform type article holder for boxes or other packages and which may be conveniently manipulated to fit boxes or packages of different size.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a one-piece platform type article holder for packages which includes means for engaging and supporting a plurality of cup-shaped containers for pastry or other merchandise.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a one-piece platform type article holder for packages incorporating means for engaging and holding cup-shaped containers and also incorporating means permitting variation in size of the article holder to facilitate use of the same in different size boxes and also to engage different sizes and shapes of containers.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a one-piece platform type article holder for packages incorporating a platform of circular formation to engage and support a ring shaped article and also providing a trough for receiving and supporting a straight article.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a one-piece platform type article holder for packages incorporating a generally circular platform, together with means for holding the device in erected condition where-/ by the same may be received in a flexible transparent bag to form an attractive display package which will also firmly support and protect the contents.
A further object of the invention is the provision of 7 United States Patent a supporting means for an article holder of the display board type.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein:

With continued reference to he drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 to 8, there is shown a one-piece platform type article holder constructed in accordance with this invention and which may well comprise a generally rectangular base 10 of anysuitable sheet material, such as cardboard, plastic or the like. The base 10 is provided with a transverse score line 11 to facilitate separating the same into two parts 12 and 13.
A generally rectangular article engaging platform 14 is formed in the central portion of the base 10 by cutting along a plurality ofspaced arcuate lines to provide concave side edges 15, 16, 17 and 18 terminating in four outwardly extending cars 19, 2t 21 and 22, which ears are spaced ninety degrees apart and with the cars 20 and 22 in alignment with the score line 11.
An outwardly extending tab 23 is connected to the outer end of the car 20 along a fold line 24 and the side edges 25 and 2.6 ofthetab 23 diverge outwardly and the outer end edge 27 is parallel to the fold line 24. In a similar manner, a tab 28 is connected to the outer end of the ear 22 along a fold line 29 and the side edges 30 and 31 of v the tab 28 diverge outwardly and the outer end edge 32 is parallel to the fold line 29. Tab 23 is provided with. arcuate notches 33 and 34 adjacent the fold line 24 and thetab 28 is provided with arcuate notches 35 and 36 t adjacent the fold line 29. The notches 33 and 34, as
well as the side edges 25 and 26 and end edge 27 of the tab 23 form continuations of the side edges 16 and 17 of the platform 14, while the notches 35 and 36, side edges 30 and 31 and end edge 32 of the tab 28 form continu ations of the side edges 15 and 18 of the platform 14. V
A hinge member 37 is connected to the outer end of Patented Mar. 7, 1961 3 the ear 19 along a fold line 38 and the outer end of the hinge member 37 is connected to the base along a fold line 39 parallel to the fold line 38. The side edges 40 and 41 of the hinge member 37 diverge outwardly and are provided with arcuate notches 42 and 43 adjacent the inner fold line 38. The notches 42 and 43 and side edges 46 and 41 form continuations of the concave side edges and '16 of the platform 14.
In a similar manner, a hinge member 44 is connected to the outer end of the car 21 along an inner fold line 45 and the opposite end of the hinge member 44 is connected to the base 10 along a fold line 46 parallel to the fold line 45. The side edges 47 and 48 of the hinge member 44 divergeoutwardly and are provided with armate notches 49 and 50 adjacent the inner fold line 45. The side edges 47 and 4S and the arcuate notches 49 and 50 of the hinge member 44 form continuations of the concave side edges 17 and 18 of the platform member 14. As mentioned above, the side edges 15, 16, 17 and 18 of the platform 14, as well as the side edges and 26 and end edge 27 of the tab 23, side edges 30 and 31 and end edge 32 of the tab 28, side edges and 41 of the hinge member 37 and side edges 47 and 48 of the hinge member 44 are precut in the material of the base 10, but prior to use the base and platform member 14 are in a fiat condition. In operation, it is only necessary to separate the two parts 12 and 13 of the base 10 along the score line 11 and move such parts into partial overlapping relation with each other, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, whereupon the hinge members 37 and 44 will bend along the fold lines 38, 39, 45 and 46 to elevate the platform member 14 above the base 10 to the position best shown in Fig. 3. At the same time, the tabs 23 and 28 are bent downwardly to the position shown in Fig. 4. In this condition, the base 10.with the platform 14 in erected condition thereon may be inserted in a box or other container 51 as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 and cupshaped containers 52 having upwardly diverging sidewalls 53 may be positioned in the box 51 with the bead 54 around the upper edge of the containers 52 may be disposed below the platform member 14 and received in the arcuate notches at the inner ends of the hinge members and tabs as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The diverging side edges of the hinge members and tabs will engage the diverging side walls of the containers 52 to firmly support the same in place in the box -51.
As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the article holder of this invention is utilized in a substantially square box, but if desired, the same may be varied in size by varying the overlap of the two portions 12 and 13 of the base 10 to accommodate small variations in dimensions of the square box or if desired, the same may be utilized in a rectangular box of the type shown in Fig. 7 and having one dimension considerably longer than the other. In this case, a box 55 having relatively long side edges 56 and 57 and shorter side edges 58 and 59 may be utilized to receive the article holder of this invention and in this case, the overlap between the portions 12 and 13 of the base10 is considerably less than in the case of a square box and in this case, containers 60 of oval or oblong shape may be accommodated in the same manner as described above in connection with the first form of the inven ion. The elements of the article holder are identical with those described above, but the variation in shape and sizeis obtained merely by varying the overlap between the portions 12 and 13 of the base 10.
It will thus be seen that the above described form of the invention provides an article holder which may be conveniently utilized in boxes, of different size and shape and yetone which will operate to receive and firmly support article holders therein and in which such holders may also be of varying sizes andshapes. Furthermore, the article holder of this invention prior to erection is in a flat blank condition and consequently takes up a minimum of shipping and storage space and yet maybeconveniently erected by a simple manual manipulation thereof, as fully explained above.
A modified form of the invention for accommodating a different type of article is shown in Figs. 9 to 13 and may well comprise a generally rectangular base 61 of any suitable sheet material, such as cardboard, plastic or the like and with the base 61 provided with a transverse score line 62 to facilitate separating the same into two parts 63 and 64.
An article engaging platform65 of generally oval shape is cut from the base 61 with the major axis of the platform member 65 at right angles to the score line 62. A hinge member 65 is cut from the base 61 and connects one end of the platform member 65 along a fold line 67 with the portion 63 of the base 61 along a fold line 68 parallel to the fold line 67. Similarly, a hinge member 69 is connected to the opposite end of the platform member 65 along a fold line 70 and to the portion 64 of the base 61 along a fold line 71 parallel to the fold line 70.
The platform member 65 is provided with a central transversely disposed rectangular section 72 extending between the side edges 73 and 74 of the platform member 65 and connected thereto by spaced parallel fold lines 75 and 76. The rectangular section 72 is provided with an outwardly extending tab 77 and 78 at each end thereof. A wall section 79 is connected to the central section 72 along the fold line 76 and to the remainder of the platform section 65 along a fold line 80. In a similar manner, a wall section 81 is connected to the central section 72 along the fold line 75 and to the remainder of the platform member 65 along a fold line 82. The wall section 79 and 81 extend between the side edges 73 and 74 of the platform member 65. It is further to be noted, that the fold lines 75, 76, 80 and 82, as well as the fold lines 67, 68, 70 and 71 are all parallel.
In operation, it is only necessary to separate the two parts 63 and 64 of the base 61 along the score line 62 and to partially overlap the parts 63 and 64, as best shown in Figs. 10 and ll, at which time the hinge members 66 and 69 will bend along the fold line 68 and 67, as well as 70 and 71 to elevate the platform member 65 above the base 61 to the position shown in Fig. ll. The central section 72 remains in substantially the same plane as the base 61 and the tabs 77 and 78 extend beneath the lowermost part 63 or 64 of the base 61 to lock the platform member 65 in position and as shown in Fig. 11, the wall section 7) and 81 are substantially vertical to form an article receiving trough 83 between the wall section 79 and 81 and having a bottom wall formed by the central section 72. The operation of moving the parts 63 and 64 of the base 61 toward each other operates to change the platform member 65 from an oval shape to a substantially circular shape as best shown in Fig. 10 and in this form, the platform member 65 serves to receive and retain a ring-shaped article, such as a string of beads 84 as shown in Fig. 12, and a straight article formed of a plurality of beads 85 may be disposed in the trough 83. Since the beads forming the string 84 are circular in cross section a portion thereof will be disposed between the platform member 65 and the base 61, which, of course, will operate to retain such string of beads 84 in place on the device.
Since it is often desired to support an article holder of this type on a display stand or the like, means has been provided for accomplishing this purpose which is integral with the device and one which also cooperates with the bag or other cover which may be utilized to protect the articles carried thereby. With particular reference to Fig. 9, a reinforcing strip 86 is connected to the base 61 along a fold line 37 and a front panel 88 is connected to the reinforcing strip 86 along a fold line 89. A rear panel 90 is connected to the front panel 88 along a fold line 91 and it is to be noted that the fold lines 87, 89 and 91 are all parallel in order to facilitate proper formation of the supporting means. Also provided in the front and rear panels 88 and 90 are apertures 92 and 93 respectively, the function of which will be presently described.
In the operation of the supporting means, the reinforcing strip 86 is folded along the line 87 into overlapping relation with the base 61 as shown in Fig. 11 and the front panel 88 is folded along the line 89 into overlapping relation with the reinforcing strip 86 and base 61. The rear panel 90 is folded along the line 91 into underlapping relation to the base 61, reinforcing strip 86 and front panel 88 and this operation serves to bring the apertures 92 and 95 into alignment. At this time the supporting means may be secured in place by inserting staples 94 or other suitable fastening means through the front panel 88, the reinforcing strip 86, the base 61 and the rear panel NP and the apertures 92 and 93 will serve to en gage a supporting element to support the entire article holder.
If it is desired to enclose the article carried by the holder, this may be conveniently accomplished by utilizing a transparent plastic bag 95 or other suitable covering means and as best shown in Figs. 12 and 13, the upper open edges of the bag 95 would be disposed between the reinforcing strip 86 and the base 61 and between the rear panel 90 and the base 61. The staples 94 or other fastening means would likewise pass through the material of the bag 95 and firmly hold the same in position.
It will be seen that by the above described modified form of the invention, there has been provided a very simple, yet highly efficient means for conveniently receiving and supporting a ring-shaped article and also a straight article and at the same time, to provide for an inexpensive and strong supporting means for the article holder. As in the prior form of the invention, the entire holder may be manufactured and supplied in flat blank condition thereby occupying a minimum of space and thereafter may be conveniently erected by a simple manual operation.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but only as indicated in the appended claims.
