3 Claims. (Cl. 20645.33)
This invention relates to packaging articles and/ or combinations and particularly to a package providing integrally built-in hanger means in the finished combination or package.
It is well known that many different items of merchandise are for sale in every commercial establishment in existence today. Thus, manufacturers for particular items frequently endeavor to secure favorable displays of their products by providing special stands for use with the articles, special boxes for receiving the articles, or by endeavoring to attract attention in other different manners. One particular efiective type of display rack of an inexpensive but sturdy construction is that comprising a center support pole having a plurality of vertically spaced arms thereon with a plurality of individual hanger hooks being provided on the arms for the various articles to be displayed. Thus the individual articles usually would be hung individually or by small groups on these individual hanger hooks or arms and would be effectively displayed separately from the products, or from different sizes or styles of the same article.v However, the articles usually cannot be easily and individually moved from the racks ahd frequently are damaged when engaged with or as removed from such a display rack. It also is very desirable that these articles be adapted to be replaced on the rack if moved therefrom in error and not sold at such time.
It thus is the general object of the present invention to provide a novel packaging combination characterized by the provision therein of an integral hanger supporting hook for the packaged article.
Another object of the invention is to provide a packaging combination including a carrier board, an enclosing container, and a closure member which is adapted to be secured over the container and carrier board for sealing such board and wherein an integral hanger hook can be provided by punching or cutting a section from the packaging assembly.
A further object of the invention is to provide a relatively inexpensive type of a hanger means integral with a packaging combination whereby the package combination can be supported from such hanger hook.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sturdy hanger means in an inexpensive, attractive combination whereby the article is adapted to be individually supported upon any conventional support racks and be easily engaged therewith and be readily and safely removed therefrom.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will be made more apparent as the specification proceeds.
Attention now is particularly directed to the accompanying drawings wherein embodiments of the invention are shown, and where-in:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of one packaging combination embodying the principles of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on line 3--3 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 4 is an elevation of a modification of the packaging combination of the invention.
When referring to corresponding parts shown in the specification and referred to in the drawings, corresponding numerals are used to facilitate comparison between equivalent parts.
Broadly speaking, the present invention relates to a packaging combination comprising, usually, a carrier board, an article on the carrier board, a container receiving the carrier board and article thereon, which carrier board and container extend beyond the article, closure means for the container, and means securing the upper portion of the container, board and closure means together and closing or sealing the container. This container, closure means and board have a downwardly inclined notch cut or otherwise formed in the upper edge thereof and having an upwardly directed end section to provide an upwardly enclosed recess so that a hanger hook is formed in the associated members for receiving a member for supporting the completed packaging combination from a suitable display unit.
Reference now is directed to the accompanying drawings and to the details shown therein so that the present invention can be completely understood. In Fig. l of the drawings, a packaging combination is indicated as a whole by the numeral 1. This novel packaging combination of the invention includes a carrier board 2 which usually is made from conventional cardboard material in sheet form and which usually has a packaged article 3 suitably secured thereto. in this instance, the article 3 may comprise, for example, a pair of diapers or similar article wherein the article is wrapped around the carrier board 2 tightly and is suitably secured thereto and carried thereby. It will be seen that the carrier board 2 extends ap-.
preciably above the article 3 positioned thereon, and. with the assembly of the carrier board and article 3 being loosely received, normally, within a transparent plastic container or bag 4. Normally this bag 4 and carrier board 2 are of substantially the same length, but the top portion of the bag 4 may be folded over and around the upper edge of the carrier board 2, if desired.
In order to close the upper portion of the combination 1 and provide a suitable carrier and support assembly therefrom, a closure member or means, such as a lightweight cardboard sheet 5 is folded over in itself and is placed over the top part of the carrier board 2 to extend downwardiy in adjacent relationship to opposed face portions of the bag 4. The closure sheet or member 5 is secured in place by suitable means, such as staples 6. These staples 6 preferably extend through the complete assembly of the sheet 5, container or bag 4 and carrier board 2, so as to make a unitary assembly at the top portion of the combination 1.
As an important feature of the present invention, a special integral support hanger or hook is provided in the packaged combination. To this end, a downwardly extending slot or notch 7 is provided in the superimposed cover or closure sheet 5, bag 4 and carrier board 2, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings. Such notch '7 terminates in an upwardly extending section 8 so that an integral hanger book 9 extends through the carrier board 2 and associated members so as to have sufficient strength for easily supporting the combination 1 from a suitable support rack, hanger hook, or the like. The combination 1 can be readily engaged with and disengaged from any conventional hanger member without any damage or injury being done to the finished combination. Thus the combination member and article thereon can be engaged with and removed from a display rack a reasonable num- Patented Apr. 9,1'9575 her of times without damage and an effective display can be provided for the article 3.
It will be realized that the bag 4 may be made from any suitable material and likewise that the closure sheet or member 5 can be of any suitable construction and thickness. Likewise the carrier board 2 is made from any conventional means and the article 3 can be secured to the carrier board 2 by staples or other members, as desired.
It should be observed that the top portion of the bag 4 can be. folded over around the top edge of the carrier board 2, if desired, and that the notch 7 can be formed in such folded portions of the bag 4, if desired, but that, in all events, the closure sheet 5 and securing means provided therefor effectively enclose the top portion of the bag 4.
A modified packaging combination of the invention is shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings and is referred to as a packaging combination 1a. In this instance, a suitable bag or container 4a is provided and it has a closure sheet or member 50 provided therefor. Again, staples 6:; or equivalent means secure the bag 4a and closure sheet 5a together and effectively enclose the article 3a within the bag. A notch 7a having an upwardly extending section 8a is again provided for defining an integral support hook 9a in the packaging combination. Thus a sturdy integral hanger support is provided in the packaging combination.
Usually the notches 7 and 7a provided in the combinations of the invention may have a horizontally extending section 10 provided therein to aid in preventing any tearing of the hanger hooks 9 or 911 when engaging the packaging combinations with suitable support or hanger members, or when disengaging them therefrom.
It will be realized that these slots or notches 7 and 8 can be formed in the packaging combination by any dosirable means and may be, for instance, punched or cut therefrom by suitable cutting dies after the packaging combination has been completed. Hence, a novel packaging combination has been provided and it permits eifective display of the article carried therein. The combination is readily secured to or removed from a display rack. Hence it is believed that the objects of the invention have been achieved.
While two complete embodiments of the invention have been disclosed herein, it will be appreciated that modification of these embodiments of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
