UMBRELLA AND PARASOL RlB SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,281, dated April 22, 1884.
(Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
treme end, for the purpose of clamping the Be it known that I, ASHER T. MEYER, of wire and holding it in the V-shaped strip.
the city, county, and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Paragon Umbrella and Parasol Ribs, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has for its object to simplify the construction of the lower or outer end of the rib.
The invention consists in a hollow umbrellarib, known as the Paragon rib, having an upset wire held in its outer end, which wire is flattened and perforated.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a part of a rib. Fig. 2 is aperspective View of the wire to be placed in the end thereof. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional View of the rib and wire. Fig. 4 is a like view showing the rib pressed together. Fig. 5 is a side view of the rib after it has been pressed in the die. Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view of the same. Fig. 7 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 8 is a side view of the lower part of the completed rib.
Umbrella and parasol ribs must be provided at the outer or lower ends with a head and with an eye or aperture, through which the thread for securing fabric covering t0 the frames can be passed. In Paragon frames the ribs are made of V-shaped strips, which are pressed together at the ends.
In carrying out my invention a piece of wire, A, is placed in the end of the V-shaped strip B, and then the upper parts of the V- shaped strip are pressed together at the ex- The end of the strip B is then placed in a press, the dies of which are so shaped that they upset the outer end of the wire and the edge of the rib itself, thereby forming a head, G, on the end of the rib or V-shaped strip. The wire A is flattened between the ends, and the sides of the strip B are also flattened against the flattened wire, especially near the inner end of the same, thereby forming a flat part, D. This part D is punched or apertured otherwise to form an eye. The construction of the end of the rib is thus simplified materially, the end of the rib is strengthened, and the cost of making the rib is reduced. The eye cannot become detached, as in the Paragon ribs of the usual construction, in which the wire ring or eye is held in the end of the rib.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a hollow umbrella-rib re-enforced at its outer end by a bar, as specified, and provided on its said outer end with ahead, 0, and flattened portion D, having an eye passing through both the rib and bar, as set forth.
2. The herein-described improvement in the method of finishing the ends of hollow um-- brella or parasol ribs, consisting in placing a wire in the end of the rib, pressing the outer end of the rib together, flattening and upsetting the wire and the rib, and then perforating the flattened rib and wire, substantially as herein shown and described.
