Feb. 21, 1961 5 MGNAIR VIBRATING DEVICE WITH A ROLLER MEMBER Filed Oct. 6, 1958 5 ha 0 w, 2 m 4 E 3 n .i M) m 6 M M 5 z o as, e 2 A m d .M l 2 N 6 Pill m r o on Il o 8 3 M f m LII.
Unite v2,972,347 VIBRATING DEVICE WITH A ROLLER MEMBER Samuel L. McNair, 733 Bedford St., Whitman, Mass. Filed Oct. 6, 1958, Ser. No. 765,402 11 claims. (ci. 12s-' 41) .ing of my device, which has a vibratory armature that is attached to said mounting member, whereby said motor and armature are free to vibrate Within the housing and to transfer their vibrations directly through the mounting member to the roller member.
Another object of my invention is to provide a housing for my device having handleportions which serve as supports for the vibrating mechanism.
' A further object is to hold the electro-magnetic -motor of my device suspended in the housing and supported by a resilient mounting member connected to the said housing handle portions.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawing. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and, therefore, I am not to be limited to the construction disclosed bythe drawing nor to the particular parts described in the specification; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of my vibrating device.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1. p
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a wiring diagram showing the electrical circuit for the device of Figures 1-3.
As illustrated, my device has a housing having a hollow section 12 which has longitudinal center rib 13, and bosses 14 at opposite sides in which are holes 15 that extend therethrough. It has hollow, integral handle portions 16 and 1S extending outwardly therefrom from opposite sides, and each has two bosses 19 having countersunk holes 20 therethrough.
Said housing has another hollow section 24 having a relatively large opening 26 intermediate opposite sides and with bosses 28 having interiorly screw-threaded holes 29 which are in alinement with said holes 15 when said sections 12 and 24 are assembled. Screws 30 in said holes and 29 hold said sections 12 and 24 together. A switch button 31 extends through an opening 32 therein. Said sections 12 and 24 may be made of plastic or ber or other suitable material.
, Said section 24 has two hollow handle portions 33 and 34 extending outwardly therefrom from opposite sides, and each has two bosses 35a having countersunk holes 35 therethrough which aline with said holes 20 to receive rates atent bolts;v 36 that are held by nuts 3S. Thus said handle portions 16 and 18, when assembled with said handle portions 33 and 34 respectively, form two handles for my device at opposite side extremities thereof.
Within said housing 10 is a mounting member 40 which may be made of metal, having a base 42, and opposite sides or bracket portions 44 that have recesses 46 therein into which nylon pin members 48 rotatably fit. These pin members 48 are iixedly mounted in opposite sides of a roller member 52 that extends through said opening 25 and partly beyond said section 24. This roller member may be made of wood and covered with plastic, or of liber, or other suitable material.
Attached to said mounting member base `42 is a wellknown electric motor, such as an electro-magnetic motor 56 having a U-shaped, vibrant armature or clapper 58,
one leg 60 of which has twopoppositely disposed sides 62 and 64 to which said motor 56 is attached by rivets 66. Said leg 60 is spaced from said housing as at 67, while the other leg 68 is xedly attached to said base 42 as by welding or other suitable means. Thus vibration of said motoi 56 directly vibrates said mounting member 40 and is transmitted to said roller member 52.
Said mounting member 40 has a side extension 7G preferably made of spring metal, and which may be an integral part of said mounting member. As shown, it has an attaching portion 72 xed to said base 42 as by rivets 73, and from which an oiset portion 72 extends angularly. A handle portion 76 extends between, and is parallel with, said housing section handle portions 16 and 33. lt extends angularly from said offset portion 74 and preferably parallel'with said attaching portion 72, and has three holes 78 therethrough, one of which is in alinement with said holes 15 and 29 whereby a said screw 30 serves in retaining said sections 12 and 24 together with said side extension handle portion 76. The other two said holes 78 in said handle portion 76 aline with said holes 20 and 35, and said bolts 36 and nuts 3S serve in retaining it and said sections 12 and 24 together.
Said mounting member 40 has another side extension 80 similarly attached to said housing sections 12 and 24 as is said side extension 7G. It has an attaching portion 82 riveted as at 83 to said base 42, an oiset portion 82, and a handle portion 86 similar to said side extension 70 and extending between said housing handle portions 18 and 33. Said handle portion 86 has three holes 88 therethrough which are in alinement with said holes 15 and 29 and receive said screws 3i) that retain said housing sections 12 and 24 together. Theother two said holes 88 are in alinement with said holes 20 and 35, and said bolts 36 and nuts 38 serve in retaining said handle portion 86 and said sections 12 and 24 together.
A rubber grip 90 lits over said handle portions 16 and 33 and another rubber grip 92 tits over said handle portions 18 and 34.
Said side extension handle portions 76'and 86, in each instance t in the spaces between the inner edges of said housing section, hollow, handle portions, which are 16 and 33 in one instance, and 18 and 34 in theV other instance. This enables said housing handle portions of both housing sections to firmly contact with each other without obstruction by said side extension handle portions 76 and 86, with said extension handle portions free to move somewhat.
Said housing section. 12 has a boss 96 which receives a screw-threaded insert 98 in which a solenium rectifier 100 is mounted by a screw 102 that extends into said insert 9S and screw-threadedly connects therewith. This rectifier 100 may be included in the electrical circuit, when desired, to intensify the vibrations.
A cord 104, enclosing electric wires, later explained, extends within and along said handle portion 16.
A wiring diagram is shown in said Fig. 4. Electrical current passing through a wire 106 continues to a switch 108 having a contact arm 1N. When the latter contacts a Lo contact member 112, :an electrical circuit is completed by wires 114 and 116 through said motor 56, and through a wire i118, as shown, to thereby operate the motor and vibrate said armature 58. When said contact arm 100 contacts a Hi contact member 120, said rectifier 100 is included iin the circuit by means of wire 122 extending to it from said Contact member 120. Another wire 124 extends from the rectifier through said wire H6 to said motor 56.
