3 Claims. (Ci. 5--`351) The present invention relates to an innerspring mattress, cushion or the like and more particularly to a novel assembly embodying individual springs mounted and supported in a novel manner between an upper and lower cushion pad.
Among the objects of the present invention is the provision of a novel innerspring unit for a mattress, cushion or the like, in which the springs are individually mounted and suspended from a platform top and bottom comprising a resilient or exble pad with the end convolutions of the springs abutting the inner surface of the pads and these end convolutions formed with at least one axial extension projecting through the pad and anchored in a novel manner at the exterior of the pad.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a novel coil spring for a mattress or cushion having each end convolution formed with an axial or longitudinal projection providing for independent coil suspension from a pad or covering of an innerspring mattress or cushion.
The present invention further comprehends a novel mattress or cushion assembiy comprising an encompassing frarne, plural rows of coil springs with each spring having end convolutions and each end convolution having one or more outwardly and longitudinally projecting extensions with each extension projecting through a pad covering the end convolutions on one side of the assembly, and a length of wire projecting through the end of the extensions of each row of springs at one side of the assembly, the ends of each length of wire being anchored to the opposite ends of the frame.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a novel mattress or cushion assembly having an encompassing wire frame, multiple rows of aligned but spaced coil springs with the end convolution of each coil spring provided with an outwardly projecting extension, a pad covering the end convolutions on one side of said coil springs and provided withV aligned rows of openings through which project the extensions on the coil springs, and plural lengths of wire at the exterior of each pad with a length of wire projecting through the extensions on each row of coil springs to thereby suspend one end of the aligned row of coil springs from its length of wire.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a novel innerspring unit for a mattress or cushion, comprising a frame containing multiple rows of aligned coil springs, a covering for the frame and opposite ends of said coil springs, a projection on the end of each coil spring adapted to project outwardly through the covering, and means on the exterior of the covering for thereat engaging the projections on each row of aligned coil springs and suspending these springs in operative position.
Further objects are to provide a construction of maximum simplicity, eiciency, economy and ease of assembly and operation, and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and are inherently possessed thereby.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan View of one corner of an innerspring mattress or cushion assembly embodying the present invention and showing the manner of mounting the end convolutions of the coil springs between the upper and lower pads or surface layers, a portion of the upper pad being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentaryl view, part in side elevation to show the convolutions of a coil spring, and part in vertical cross section with the section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the coil spring of Fig. 2 but with the spring compressed and the upper and lower pads removed to show more clearly the wires connecting the upper and lower convolutions of a row of springs'.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the upper end convolution and extension of a spring.
Fig; 5 is a fragmentary enlarged view in vertical cross section through the upper pad of the mattress and showing the novel manner of anchoring and suspending the spring by the extension on its upper convoiution, the view being taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. l.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary top plan View similar to Fig. l but of an alternate construction of innerspring mattress or cushion assembly.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view, part in side elevation and part in vertical cross section, the section being taken on the line 7 7 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the upper end convolution of the alternate construction of coil spring and showing the manner of suspending it from a length of wire.
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary enlarged view in vertical cross section through the upper pad or surface layer as viewed in Fig. 7, but on an enlarged scale to show in greater detail the manner in which the upper end convolution of the coil spring is suspended in its anchored position.
Referring more particularly to the disclosure in the drawings and to the novel illustrative embodiments of the present invention therein shown, the embodiment of Figs. l to 5, inclusive, discloses an assembly comprising plural rows of aligned but spacedl coil springs 1G conned within an encompassing wire frame 11 at the top and a similar wire frame 12 at the bottom of an innerspring mattress or cushion assembly 13, and an vupper pad or surface layer 14 and a lower pad or surface layer 15 each preferably of sisal bers, but such pads may be formed of foam rubber or other cushioning material suitable for use as a padding for an innerspring mattress or cushion.
When the pads 14 and 15 are formed of sisal fibers or the like, the inner surface of each pad is preferably coated or impregnated with a rubber latex dispersion providing a tough surface covering at 16 for retaining the end convolutions 17 of the coil springs 1i) therebetween and against which the spring convolutions abut.
The coil springs lt are shown spaced apart to provide independent spring suspension, with the relatively large end or terminal convolutions 17 each bent to form a radially inwardly projecting indentation 13 with its end or apex bent at a right angle projecting axially and outwardly to form an extension l at the top and an extension at the bottom of each spring projecting outwardly through an aligned opening 21 formed in the adjacent upper and lower pad 14 and 15. By aligning the openings 21 in the upper and lower pads with the extensions 19 and 19a at the opposite ends of adjacent coil springs 10, these extensions of a row of aligned but spaced springs 10 are connected by a length of wire 22 projecting therethrough, it being observed that the upper extension 19 of each spring 10 provides an inverted, substantially V- shaped projection extending axially or longitudinally of 3 .Y its spring, with the lower extension 19E' of each spring being of substantially Vlshape and projecting in a similar manner downward through an opening 21 in the lower padlS.V j
The upper and lower pads 14. and are preferably of such dimensions that their peripheral edges at 23 project beyond and overlap the wire frames 11 and 12 with Vthe folds connected thereto by staples 24 or other attaching means. The' opposite ends 20 of each length of wire 22 which extends completely across the pads 14 and 15 of the mattress or cushion are also bent over the folds or overlapped edges 23 of these pads as shown in Figs. 1,
2 and 3 onto the wire frames 11 or 12. These pads 14 and 15 thus provide a platform top and bottom for the mattress or cushion.
Each coil spring is shown tapered and formed of a continuous length of wire having the relatively large end or terminal convolutions or windings 17 and the smaller inner spirals or windings 25, with the movement of the latter relative to the end convolutions being controlled by the inwardly projecting indentation 18, whereby the inner spirals are thereby conned in their axial movement upon compression by engagement with these upper and'lower indentations 18. rlhe extreme ends 26 of the end convolutions 17 are tightly wound about these convolutions to securely anchor these ends 26 in place. y In the embodiment shown in Figs. 6 to 9, inclusive, each coil spring Z7 is also of the tapered form but with its upper convolution and its lower end or terminal convolution 28 in thisinnerspring mattress or cushion assembly 30 bent to provide diametrically opposed and outwardly and axially projecting extensions 31 and 32,
the upper extensions 31 being of inverted substantially V-shape and the lower ones 32 of substantially V-shape. Each coil spring 27 is shown formed of a single length of wire providing the larger end convolutions 28 and the intermediate smaller spirals or windings 33, the ends 34 of the end convolutions being tightly wound about and anchored to these larger end convolutions.
In this alternate form of spring'. assembly, the pads 14 and 15 are provided with sets of openings 35 so spaced apart that the extensions 31 and 32 at the opposite ends of the spaced individual springs 27 of one row are disposed in alignment to receive a straight length of wire ,36. As in the embodiment of Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the ends 37 of each length of wire 36 are bent over the overlapped or folded edges 23 of the upper and lower pads 14 and 15 of the innerspring mattress or cushion, and
these folded edges are further anchored in position by staples or other attaching means 24. f
In both forms of the novel invention, the coil springs 10 (Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive) and coil springs 27 (Figs. 6 to 9, inclusive) are spaced apart with spaced rows of these springs connected solely by the upper and lower sets of straight wires 22 and 36, respectively. Thus, the invention provides independent coil suspension, and these coils may be of diierent sizes and of different lrmness in dierent sections of the mattress or cushion, as desired.
" The manner of mounting or suspending the coil springs eliminates pocketing of the insulation or padding employed. It also relieves the stress point in thev coils by the straight connecting Wires which prevent the coils from coming through and assure their retention.
This novel assembly is suitable for use in dilerent size cushions or mattresses, and the entire unit assembly may be Prefabricated and sold to a customer for subsequent use in his cushion. l
Having thus disclosed the invention, I claim:
1. An innerspring mattress or cushion consisting of an encompassing wire frame, a plurality of rows of aligned but separate coil springs, a pad covering the top and bottom end convolutions of said springs with each end convolution having a radially inwardly projecting indentation with its end bent outwardly to provide an axial extension projecting through and to the exterior of the contiguous pad, and a length of wire projecting through the extensions of each aligned row of coils at the exterior of a pad, each pad consisting of sisal fibers having a rubber latex dispersion on the side of the pad in contact with said-end convolutions with the peripheral edges of each pad projecting beyond and folded over the wire frame and each end of the wire being bent over and anchored onto one of said folded edges of the pad.
2. An innerspring unit for a mattress or cushion, comprising a wire frame encompassing said unit, multiple rows of aligned coils with the coils of each row spaced apart to provide independent coil suspension in said unit, each coil having end convolutions and each end convolution having an outwardly and substantially axially projecting extension, a pad of cushioning material covering the end convoultions at each side of said unit and having a rubber latex dispersion on the side of each pad in contact with said end convolutions and each pad having a plurality of openings, each extension of said end convolutions projecting through said openings in its adjacent pad, and a length of wire on the opposite side of said pad projecting through and connecting the outer end of said extensions on each row of coil springs with the ends of each length of wire being anchored to the frame.

An innerspring unit for a mattress or cushion as set forth in claim 2, in which the peripheral edges of each pad overlap and are anchored to the Wire frame, and each length of wire extends over the exterior surface of its pad and has its ends bent over the overlapped peripheral edges of its pad.
