12 Claims. (C1. 248-361) This invention relates to holders 4for trash cans including means for holding the lid securely closed on the trash can.
It is therefore the primary object of this invention to provide a trash can holder which is securely anchored in the ground for supporting a trash can thereon and includes magnetic means for holding the bottom of the can on the holder, preventing winds or animals from tipping the Vcan over and further magnetizing the can and its lid for holding thel lid securely on the can under the inuence of the magnetic eld created by the magnetic means.
It is therefore a further object of this invention in accordance with the foregoing object, to provide a trash can holder serving the above noted purposes with structure that is hidden beneath the ground and having a minimum of parts to make a holder that is both practical and economically desirable.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a sectional view of one form of trash can holder in accordance with` this invention and showing a trash can in position thereon.
Figure 2 is a partial sectional view of the trash can holder of Figure 1, removed from its installation in the ground.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of another form of trash can holder with a trash can shown mounted thereon.
In Figure 1, one form of trash can holder is shown, generally indicated by reference numeral 10. A trash can 12 is shown mounted on the holder and includes a lid 14. The trash can 12 rests on a plate 16 of the holder which is set in the ground, concrete or any surface in which the holder is installed. The plate 16 has a recess therein as indicated by reference numeral 18 through which a permanently magnetized disk 20 extends. As shown, the magnetic disk 20 is in contact with the bottom of the trash can thereby tending to prevent tipping of the trash can as it rests on the plate 16 and further, magnetizing the trash can itself as well as the lid 14 so as to securely hold the lid on the can under the influence of the magnetic eld originating from the magnetic disk 20.
The plate 16 is securely anchored in the ground by means of a tubular member 22 fixed to the bottom of the plate 16 below the recess 18 ,and extending downwardly therefrom into the ground. Secured to the end of the tubular member 22 is an anchoring disk 24.
The magnetic member 20 is connected to a rod or shaft 26 extending downwardly through an opening in the top of the tubular member 22 and terminating in an end disk 28. Spaced below said disk 28 and secured to the tubular member 22 is an abutment member 30 in the form of a bolt disposed between the sides of the tubular member 22. A spring 32 is disposed within the tuj 2,971,739 Patented Feb. 14, 1961 lCC bular member between the abutment 30 and disk 28 and is thereby operative to yieldably bias the rod 26 and magnetic member 20 upwardly into contact with the lbottom of the trash can 12.
A stop member 34 is xed to the rod 26 intermediate its ends and cooperates with the top end of the tubular member 22 so as to limit outward movement of the rod 26 and the magnetic member 20 to which it is attached. It is therefore apparent that the trash can may he lifted oit and away while the magnetic member 20 will be retained by the holder device by virtue of stop member 34, as shown in Figure 2.
Another form of trash can holder is shown in Figure 3. In this -form of holder a magnetic member 36 is used having such powerful magnetic properties that contact between the member 36 and the bottom of the trash can 12 is not necessary in order to magnetize the trash can and its lid as is the case in the Figure 1 form. Accordingly, no spring mechanism is necessary as in the Figure 1 form in order to maintain contact between the magnetic member and the bottom of the trash can. 4In the Figure 3 form however means must be provided in order to accommodate different trash can bottom constructions which are automatically taken care of by the spring mechanism in the Figure 1 form. The magnetic member 36 is there- -fore connected to a screw member 38 which extends downwardly therefrom through the recess 40 and through a concrete slab 42 having a can positioning depression 50, which is set into the ground so that its top surface is ush therewith. An adjusting nut 44 is threadedly engaged with the screw member 38 and disposed within the recess 40 so as to adjustably position the height of the magnetic member 36 above the top of the slab 42 in order to accommodate different size trash cans. A bottom retaining nut 46 is also provided, threadedly engaged with the screw member 38 on the bottom side of the slab 42, in order to securely retain the screw member and magnetic member 36 in adjusted position.
The lforegoing is considered as illustrative onlyiof the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
l. A trash can and lid holder comprising, support means upon which a trash can may rest, recess means disposed within said support means and defining an area on the support means over which said trash can is to be positioned, magnetic means operative to magnetize said trash can, said magnetic means being extensibly mounted above said recess, adjustable means for adjustably connecting said magnetic means to said support means for holding said trash can with lid, on said support means, and retaining means operatively connected to said adjustable connecting means to prevent removal of said magnetic means from said support means so that said trash can may be lifted out of the inuence of said magnetic means.
2. The holder as dened in claim l, wherein said support means includes anchor means for anchoring said support means in the ground.
3. The holder as defined in claim 2, wherein said support means comprises a plate having a stop surface ush with the ground, and said anchor means includes a tubular member connected to said plate and extending downwardly therefrom into the ground.
4. The holder as dened in claim 3, wherein said anchor means further includes a disk connected to said tubular member at its lower end in the ground.
5. The holder as deiined in claim 1, wherein said magnetic means comprises a permanently magnetized member.
6. The holder as dened in claim 5, wherein said adjustable means comprises a rod connected to said magnetic member extending downwardly therefrom into said support means and yieldable means operatively connected to said support means and rod, -for biasing said rod and magnetic member upwardly.
7. The holder as defined in claim 6, wherein said retaining means comprises a stop mounted on said rod and cooperating with said support means for limitingrupward movement of said rod relative thereto.
8. A trash can and lid holder comprising a plate having a top surface ush with the ground, a recess disposed within the top surface of said plate, a permanently magnetized member disposed above said recess, a rod connected to said magnetic member extending downwardly therefrom through said recess and plate, and into a tubular member connected to said plate, abutment means xed to said tubular member and spaced below a disk fixed to the bottom of said rod, a spring disposed between said abutment and disk for biasing said rod and magnetic member upwardly, a stop member fixed to said rod and engageable with a top end portion of said tubular member for limiting upward movement of said rod and an anchor disk connected to and closing a bottom end of said tubular member and securely anchoring said tubular member in the ground.
9. The holder as dened in claim l, wherein said support means comprises a concrete slab.
10. The holder as defmed in claim 9, wherein said magnetic means comprises a permanently magnetized member.
11, 'The holder as defined in claim l0, wherein said adjustable means comprises a screw member connected to said magnetic member and extending downwardly therefrom into said recess and through said concrete slab, and an adjusting nut threadedly engaged with said screw member and disposed within said recess.
12. The holder as defined in claim 1l, wherein said retaining means comprises a retaining nut threadedly engaged with said screw member on a bottom side of said concrete slab.
