2 Claims. (Cl. 211-72) This invention relates to a support or holder for storage bins and the like for holding the bins at a more convenient location for the worker during assembly operations or other uses.
It is common practice to provide storage bins and the like for keeping parts separate in assembly operations. Heretofore bins have been arranged to be supported on the assembly bench and stacked one above the other so as to provide for the various parts in the bins to be within easy reach of the operator. Such stacking on the working bench uses desired space.
An object of the present invention is to provide a support for storage bins which will be suspended above the working bench to free the working bench of bins.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a panel like support provided with attaching means thereon eifective to allow for the easy attachment and removal of storage bins therefrom without the use of tools.
Another object of the invention is to provide a support so constructed as to allow storage bins to be easily hooked thereto and held therefrom in cantilever fashion.
Another object of the invention is to make such support movable or portable.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a storage bin support embodying the invention and showing one bin thereon, the other being omitted for clarity;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale taken substantially along line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on an enlarged scale taken substantially along line 33 of Figure 1 and showing storage bins attached thereto;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along line 44 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the hook portions of the panel.
Referring to the drawing in more detail, designates a storage bin support having a base 11 and a vertically extending panel portion 12 on which storage bins 13 may be attached. The support comprises end frames 14 which are made of lengths of sheet metal channelshape in cross-section bent into L shape which provides a horizontal leg portion 15 and a vertical leg portion 16. Strips of sheet metal 17 (see Figure 5) extend between the vertical legs of the frames and these have one longitudinal edge thereof bent into a general channel shape as at 19 with the outer side 20 of the channel extending generally parallel to the body portion 21 of the strip and the other marginal edge thereof is bent on a slant as at 18. The edge 22 of portion 18 extends outwardly a distance to be in vertical line with the side 20 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. There are a plurality of strips 17 and these are secured at their ends to the frames 14 in any appropriate manner as by way of example, by a welding operation. The strips 17 are positioned one above the other with the edge 22 abutting the channel 19 of the next-above strip at the outer edge thereof to be in line with the side 20 so as to oppose such force which may be applied in a downwardly. direction on the said side 20. The upper portion of the uppermost strip designated 23 is bent as at 24 to overlay the end of frames 14and the central portion is extended to form a hook-like portion 25 for hanging the support to a convenient mounting. Openings 26 are also prm vided for receiving hooks and the like for also hanging the support at some convenient location. The base 11 comprises a strip of sheet metal which is bent at right angles at one marginal edge thereof as at 27 so as to extend across the outer ends of the leg portions 15 of the frames. The other longitudinal marginal edge of the strip is bent upwardly as at 28 and then on an outwardly slant as at 29 similar to the slanted portions 18 so as to abut the next-above strip 17 at the outer edge of the channel for a purpose previously mentioned.
From the above it will be seen that the sides 20 provide a plurality of. lips which extend from one side to another of the panel portion of the device and in which each lip is reinforced at the lower edge thereof by the bracket like slanted portion 18 of the strip next below. it will be further seen the base 11 provides for self-support of the panel on any appropriate surface which base additionally provides additional working area or other use. It will be further apparent that the device may be suspended from some suitable support so as to free the work area of the bench of the device when such practice is desired and in such cases the base 11 may be omitted.
The storage bins 13 may take any form, that herein shown is of two types of known manufacture and each constructed to be superimposed one on the other in stacked relation. it IS contemplated to use this type of storage bins and to modify the construction only to the extent required to adapt the same to be used with the panel structure above described without destroying the stacking feature thereof. To this end the rear wall 30 of the bin 13 is preferably extended and bent outwardly and downwardly in a hook formation 31 as best seen in Figure 3, so that the hook is of the same piece of metal as the rear wall of the bin or the hook 31 may be provided by a separate piece of sheet material bent into proper form and secured to the said rear wall 30. The hook 31 is adapted to be positioned over a side or lip 20 of any of the strips 17 and the rear wall 30 of the bin will rest against a lip 20 of a strip 17 below, the channels 19 bemg spaced from each other a distance such as to provide for the rear wall 36 of the smaller size bin to at least engage the lip 20 of the next-below strip 17. The lower portion or wall 30 will be cut away as at 32 so that in stacking the hook 31 will be received.
The bin 13' of Figure 3 is of a different construction and of larger size. The hook portion 31 is, however, formed in the same manner as above described by extending a portion of the rear wall 30' thereof into hook formation 31.
l have shown and described the bins of a known manufacture. It is, however, contemplated the bins may take any of various shapes and sizes consistent with the size of the mounting panel therefor.
From the foregoing it will be apparent I have disclosed a mounting panel for storage bins and similar containers which allow for ready attachment and removal of bins therefrom. It will be further apparent that the panel with bins attached thereto may be transported from one location to another and supported on any suitable surface or may be suspended from a suitable support.
Thus, a source of supply of any of various parts, fastenings and the like required for a particular job may be positioned at a most convenient location for the worker and upon completion of the job may be easily transported to the locations as required.
I claim:
1. A panel for the mounting of a group of storage bins and the like comprising an upright support generally horizontal parallel sheet metal body strips carried by said support one above the other each strip having an outwardly extending channel formation at one longitudinal edge thereof with the outer side of the channel extending parallel to the body of the strip, the opposite marginal edge of a lower strip extending on an outward upward slant and with its free edge engaging the channel portion of a strip above at the outer edge of the channel to provide a support therefor.
2. A panel for the mounting of a group of storage bins and the like comprising upright end frames, sheet metal body strips extending between said frames and secured at their ends to said frames, said strips each having an outwardly extending channel formation at one longitudinal edge thereof with the outer side of the channel extending parallel to the body of the strip, the opposite marginal edge of each lower strip extending on an outward upward slant with its free edge abutting the channel portion of a strip above at the outer edge thereof to provide a support therefor.
