VARIABLE SPEEDl DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,143, dated' April 22, 188%. Application tiled September 6I 1593. (No modell T0 (LZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER F. MARKS, of Chapinville, Ontario county, New York, have invented an Improved Variable SpeedDevice, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
tMy invention relates to an improved variable speed device designed for use in connection with glaiudrills, but capable of being applied to many other purposes, which improvement is hereinafter fully described and specified.
My improved variable speed device is represented in the accompanying drawings, in Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a diagram illustrating the variable motion of the clutch-levers. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modification. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 6 represents a modified form of the cams.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the driving-shaft of the clutch mechanism, )rovided with two or more cams or eccentrics, D D, which impart a vibrating motion to the clutch-levers E E as the shaft revolves, and B is the driven shaft, to which are secured the clutchdisks F F, having the grooves G in their sides, in which the dogs H, connected with the levers E E, engage. The levers E E are made of such a length as to permit the shafts A and B to be shifted relatively to each other without bringing the cams D D beyond the ends ofthe levers. By shortening the distance between these two shafts, the angular vibration imparted to the levers by the cams on the shaft A will be increased, while by removing the shafts to a greater distance apart the throw of the levers will be decreased, and in this way'the speed of the rotation of the driven shaft may be varied. This opera` tion is illustratedv by the diagram, Fig. 3. When the cam or eccentric D is placed away from the driven shaft B, the vibration of the lever E will be from E to E', Fig. 3; but when it is brought nearer to B,the lever will vibrate from E to E. The levers Eswing freely about the driven shaft, being allowed to fall by their own weight, o'r they may be provided with springs, by which their return movement is secured. The dogs H are provided with laterallyprojection lugs o, which engage with the grooves G in the side of the clutch-disks F, so that when the levers rise their motion is imparted to the disks and the driven shaft;
but when the levers descend, the lugs slide shaft A'may be of any suitable form, that illustrated in Fig. 6 being adapted for use when only two cams, clutches, and clutch-levers are employed, in which case it is desirable to secure a quick return movement of the levers, so that a continuous rotation may be imparted to the driven shaft.
In the drawings I have represented the driven shaft B as arranged to rotate in fixed bearings indicated by the dotted lines T, while the drivingshaft A is shown as arranged to be moved to and from the driven shaft by swinging on the supporting-arm Q, or sliding in the groove O in the supporting-frame K; but -it is obvious that either shaft may be adj usted so as to accomplish the result of Vtransmitting a variable rot-ation to the driven shaft.
In the construction shown in Figs. l and 2 the shaft G rotates in xed bearings and transmits motion to the adjustable shaft A by means of the gearing U V, or by suitable belting, the shaft A being supported on the swinging arm or arms Q, connected together by brace or sleeve B, and constructed so as to maintain the two shafts at the same distance apart, while A is capable of being moved to and from the driven shaft B. The same result may be accomplished by allowing the shaft Ato slide backward and forward in a groove, O, which may be curved, if desired, in a suitable supporting-frame, K. A lever, N, attached to a yoke-frame, L, connected with the ends of the shaft A, serves to effect its adjustment rela- 95 tively to the driven shaft. The lever may be provided with a spring-catch engaging with a notched seg ment in order to secure the shaft A in any desired position. Any suitable form of clutch may be used in connection with my Ioo improved variable speed device.
ln the drawings the driving-shaft A is rep' resented in full lines in the position which it occupies when nearest the driven shaft, and in dotted lines A When at its greatest distance therefrom. The rate of the rotation of the driven shaft will decrease as the shaft A is removed from the shaft B.
I claiinl. The combination, with the driving and driven shafts A and B, of a series of two or more clutches and clutch-levers applied to the driven shaft, and mechanism for imparting variable motion to the levers, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the relatively adjustable driving and driven shafts A and B,
of a series of two or more clutches and clutchlevers applied to the driven shafts, and meehanism for imparting variable motion to thelevers, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, with the. shafts C and B, of the intermediate adjustable sha-ft, A, a series ofclutches and clutch-levers applied to the driven shaft B, and mechanism attached to the intermediate shaft to impart variable motion to the clutch-levers, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination, with the shaft A,pro vided with cams or eeoentrics D D, supporting-arm Q, shaft C, and gears U V, of the driven shaft B, arranged to be rotated at a variable speed by clutches and clutch-levers operated from the shaft A, substantially as and for the purposes described.
5. The combination, with the relatively adjustable driving and driven shafts A and B, of a series of clutches and clutch-levers applied to the driven shaft, and a corresponding series of cams on the driving-shaft, and the shaft C, arranged to transmit :motion to the driving-shaft by connecting mechanism, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. The combination, with the driven shaft B, arranged to revolve in fixed bearings, and provided with a series of clutches and clutchlevers, of the adjustable drivingshaft A, arranged to be moved to and fro to vary the movement of the clutch-levers, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
