Description
\ Jam 17, 1961 W. M. ALLEN BOW ATTACHMENT Filed Aug. 28, 1957 United States Patent D BOW ATTACHMENT Wesley M. Allen, Windsor, Mo.
Filed Aug. 28, 1957, Ser. No. 680,853
3 Claims. (Cl. 124-23) This invention relates to archers bows, and in particular to an attachment for such a bow.
It is the commonly accepted practice in stringing a bow to rest the lower end of the bow against the instep of one foot, to grasp the bow by the approximate center with one hand and to bend the bow with the other hand into position where a loop on the upper end of the bow string can be pushed into a notch in the upper end of the bow. While this method has been used since time immemorial, and is used almost universally, it has two disadvantages. When the bow string is provided with a loop at its lower end which fits in a notch in the lower end of the bow, the lower loop of the bow string has a tendency to slip out of its notch when the bow is being strung. Since the lower notch of the bow is practically at the ground, there is no convenient way to prevent this. The other disadvantage is that the lower tip of the bow is scuffed and worn away by its contact with the ground.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide an attachment for an archers bow, which will hold the lower loop of a bow string in place in the notch of the bow while the bow'is being strung.
Another object is to provide such a device which will prevent scufiing and wearing of the lower tip of the bow.
Still another object of this invention is to provide such an attachment which is light and unobtrusive, and which will not affect the action of the bow.
Other objects will become apparent to'those skilled in the art in the light of the following description and accompanying drawing.
In accordance with this invention generally stated, an attachment for an archers bow is provided in the form of a resilient, pliable, hollow sleeve, open at one end and closed at its other end, oblong in cross section at its open end and deeper than the distance between the lower tip and the lower bow string receiving notch of a bow upon which it is to be mounted. The inside surface of one of the long sides of the sleeve extends along the side of the bow along which the bow string is stretched.
The closed end of the sleeve is preferably arched with two fiat sides and two arcuate ones.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing a bow, equipped with an attachment constructed in accordance with one embodiment of this invention, being strung;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the lower end of the bow in Figure 1, with the device of this invention mounted thereon;
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the attachment of this invention unmounted on a bow;
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the attachment shown in Figures l-3;
Figure 5 is a view in side elevation of the attachment shown in Figures 1-4; and
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken along the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Patented Jan. 17, 1961 Referring now to the drawing for one illustrative embodiment of attachment of this invention, reference numeral 1 indicates the attachment, mounted on a bow 2. The bow 2 is equipped with a bow string 3. The bow string 3 has a loop 4 at its lower end, which fits into a notch 5 in the bow 2 near its lower tip 6.
The bow attachment 1 consists of a resilient, pliable, hollow sleeve, oblong in cross section at an upper, open end 11. It has two flat, wide sides 10 and two relatively narrow sides 12. These narrow sides 12 converge at the lower end of the sleeve, to form an arched closed end 14. The depth of the attachment, from the open end 11 to the inside wall of the closed end 14 is greater than the distance between the lower tip 6 of the bow and the lower notch 5 of the how. The attachment is preferably made of soft rubber or its equivalent.
In operation, the bow string 3 is first put into position with its loop 4 in the lower bow notch 5. The open end 11 of the attachment is then put on the lower tip 6 of the bow and the attachment is forced onto the tip 6, with a Wide side 10 on the side of the bow along which the bow string extends, until the lower tip of the bow reaches the inside surface of the closed end 14 of the attachment. In this position, the inside surface of the wide side 10 engages the bow string itself, and the remaining sides of the attachment surround the bow string loop within the notch 5, preventing dislodgment of the bow string loop when the bow is being strung. While the internal dimensions of the attachment 1 are substantially smaller than the external dimensions of the lower part of the bow, so that the attachment firmly grips the bow, requiring forceab-le removal, the contact of the inside surface of the wide side 10 does not interfere with the normal action of the bow string 3.
The attachment prevents scuffing or wear of the lower tip 6 of the bow when the bow is being strung and unstrung. Since this scufling and wear of the lower bow tip is practically the only wear to which a modern bow is subjected, the attachment of this invention keeps the bow in substantially its original condition.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, an archers bow, the tips of the bow each having a notch slightly remote therefrom, the notches adapted to receive and hold a bow string; a guard on the lower tip of the bow, the guard formed of resilient, elastic material, the guard tapering inwardly through at least a portion of its length from its base to its apex and rounded at its lower end; the guard having a chamber therein, the chamber in outline following the outline of the guard, the guard frictionally engaging the lower tip of the said bow, and the length of the guard being such that it extends beyond the aforementioned notch in which the lower end of the bow string is to be attached.
2. In combination, an archers bow, the tips of the how each having a notch slightly remote therefrom, the notches receiving and holding a bow string, and a bow string positioner and bow tip protector on the lower end of said bow, said how string positioner and bow tip protector comprising a hollow, resilient, pliable sleeve, open at one end and closed at the other, said sleeve being oblong in cross-section at its open end, with two wide sides, said sleeve being deeper than the distance from the lower tip of the bow to the lower bow string-receiving notch to permit the inside surface of the sides of the sleeve to maintain the bow string within the notch when the end of the bow is inserted to the bottom of the sleeve, the inside surface of one of the wide sides of the sleeve being placed on the bow string side of the bow.
3. In combination, an archers bow, the tips of the bow each having a notch slightly remote therefrom, the notches adapted to receive and hold a bow string; a guard on the lower tip of the how, the guard formed of resilient, elastic material, the guard having a chamber therein, the chamber in outline following the outline of the guard, the guard frictionally engaging the lower tip of the said bow, and the length of theguard being such that it extends beyond the aforementioned notch in which the lower end of the bow string is to be attached.
