Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMEs w. EvANs, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR COTTONv-BALES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 29,683, dated August 21, 1860.
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES W. EvANs, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Metallic Tie for Cotton-Bale Hoops; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure I represents` a top view of my improved tie. Fig. II represents the tie in connection with the bale-hoops before being fastened, and Fig. III represents the tie and balehoops securely fastened. A
Similar letters represent similar parts.
My improved metallic tie A consists of a piece of wire bent in the shape of the letter S, and in such a manner that, in the crosssection of said tie, the center part, 2, shall be either above or below the plane of the end pieces, 3 3, and so Inuch out of the line that two thicknesses of the bale-hoops may be easily passed between the bottom of the center piece, 2, and the top surfaces of the end pieces, 3 3. When the tie is applied for fastening the hoop, one end of the hoop B is passed above one end 3 of the tie A, below the center part, 2, and over the other end 3 of said tie, around which latter end it is then bent, so as to hold fast, as shown in Fig. Il. The hoop is then carried around the bale or package, while the tie is held fast by means of any suitable instrument, and for which purpose the ends 3 3 of said tie are made longer than the center part, 2, when the other end of the hoop is likewise passed through the tie A, above that end of the hoop which, as above mentioned, has been fastened to said tie, and below the center part, 2, of the tie. 'Ihe hoop B is then tightened around the bale or package, after which, with a blow of a hamnier or any other instrument, this center part, 2,'of the tie A is knocked in a line (or nearly so) with the end pieces, 3 3, by which operation the ends of the thin metal hoops B are bent in a wave line or corrugated shape, and become thereby wedged in the tie A, (see Fig. IIL) forming a perfect coupling or I`ast' ening.
Instead of giving the piece A only three bends similar to the letter S, as above mentioned, several turns may be given to the same, with every alternate one bent sufficient above the others so as to allow two thicknesses of the band to pass between them, by which arrangement a greater security will .be obtained; but from experiments I ind that three bends are sufficient for almost all purposes.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The application and use of the metal piece A, bent in the shape of the letter S, and op erating on the hoop in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
- JAMES W. EVANS.
