COMBINED SHUTTER AND AWNING- FOR WINDOWS.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,67 5, dated August 21, 1860.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB DAVID, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new Combination of a l/Vindow- Shutter and Awning; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and

exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a view from the inside of a window frame and the shutters. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken through the frame and shutters. Fig. 3 is a side view of the shutters and frame, showing the shutters in a position when they are used as an awning. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the top hinges.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the four figures.

This invention consists in hanging window blinds or shut-ters, by peculiar double hinges, at the top, sothat they will serve as shutters, and by a simple manipulation, a very good awning may be made which will keep out the rain and sun, as will be hereinafter described.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully I understand my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

The drawing fully represents my invention in which A is the ordinary window frame and B B are the blinds, or shutters,'made to fit the frame in the usual manner.

0, C, are the lower hinges which are in common with those usually applied for this purpose; and a? d are the top hinges which differ from the present hinge in the following respect.

Instead of securing the leaf of the hinge to the edges of the shutter by mortising into the edge and afiixing them by screws they are attached to plates 0 (which are screwed to the shutters) as shown in Fig. 4, by pivots c which allow the bottom of the shutters to be moved out any desirable dis tance from the window sill as shown in F ig.. 3. These hinges will thus allow the shutters to have two motions, the natural swinging motion when both the hinges of each shutter are on the hooks projecting from the window frame and a motion outward when the lower hinges are detached from their hooks. The shutters B, B, are hung in such a way at the top that when they are placed in the position represented in Fig. 3 their top edges will be close to the top cross strip and prevent rain from passing through.

The prop hooks g, g, which hook into eyes on the inside of the frame A, A, are used to keep the shutters out in the position represented in Fig. 3; when these hooks are notin immediate use they are hooked over pins h h Figs. 1 and 2.

G is a bolt passing through staples on the inside of each shutter having a hook on one end which on being placed over the pin 6, Figs. 1 and 2, will lock the two shutters securely together. The bolt G at the bottom of the shutters has an eye 6' formed on it which will fasten the shutters to a pin f, projecting up from the sill.

In using the shutters or blinds as such, they are hung by hinges at the top and bottom as shown in Fig. 2, and operate in the usual manner, but when they are to be used as an awning the bottom hinges are lifted out of their hooks and the shutters are pushed out and secured by the two hooks g, g, as shown in Fig. 3. Then if desired two side pieces, of canvas H may be attached to the shutters and to the frame as represented in Fig. 3. In using the shutters to form this awning the bolts G, G, one or both must be used to lock the shutters together. The side canvas H may be attached in such a way that it can be detached from the shutters when not in use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,

1. Hanging blinds or shutters by a pivoted 0r swivel hinge at the top, using the ordinary hinge at the bottom, and applying hooks g, g, or their equivalents to theshutters inside and a suitable locking bolt to them so that the shutters will serve either,

as such or as an awning in the manner substantially as herein described.

2. I also claim, in combination with the above the side canvas as described.
