COTTON CHOPPER. No; 296,700 Patented Apr. 8, 1884.

Nrrnn STATES PATENT Trice,
COTTON-CHOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,700, dated April 8, 1884. Application filed January '25, 1884. (No model.)
To ail 1072 0722 it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HIRAM D. LAYMAN, of Benton, in the county of Saline and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gotten-Choppers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to cotton-choppers having revolving holes; and theinvention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and claimed. I
111 the. drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved cotton-chopper. Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the same, partly broken away; and Fig. 3 is an end view of the revolving hoes.
A indicates a wheeled frame having a pair of adjustable scrapers, B, at the front, and four plows, G, at the rear. Near the center of the frame is a longitudinal shaft, D, supported in oscillatory hangers, E E, and having a bevel-pinion, F, on its forward end gearing with a bevel-pinion, G, on the axle H. On this shaft is supported a drum, I, having a series of radial perforations, in which the shanks J of the hoes K are secured by set-screws L. The hoes are thus made readily removable, so that any desired number of hoes may be employed, according to the stand of cotton required. The hoes have slightly-curved edges,
as shown in Fig. 2, in order that they may not cut the soil away from the roots of the cottonplants left standing. The hanger E serves also as a lever for swinging the shaft and its pinion to the rear, to throw the said pinion out of gear With pinion G, and it is provided with a rod, M, having shoulders N, for engaging with the cross-rod O, on which the handles P are supported. The shoulders N serve to hold the lever or hanger E in either of two positions for holding pinion F either in or out of engagement with pinion G.
Q indicates a device for elevating the chop per to hold the plows and Wheels out of contact with the ground when required.
The general frame-work shown in the drawings which is not claimed in this application is covered by my application No. 111,322, filed November 9, 1883.
\Vhat I claim is The combination, with the frame A. and the shaft D, carrying the hoe-drum, and having bevel-pinion F, gearing with a pinion, G, on the supportingaxle of the frame, of the oscillatory hangers E E and means for adjusting said hangers to hold the pinion F in or out of engagement with pinion G, substantially as shown and described.
HIRAM D. LAYMAN. Witnesses:
A. G. LYNE, SoLoN C KEMON.
