1961 B. J. BOOTH ROOF ASSEMBLY FOR A ROOF EXPANSION JOINT Filed April 18, 1958 INVENTOR. 500 7%;
VQW ,4 77011VE Y5 United States Patent ROOF ASSEMBLY FOR A ROOF EXPANSION JOINT Ben J. Booth, 1900 Lincoln Ave., No. Highway, Little Rock, Ark.
Filed Apr. 18, 1958, Ser. No. 729,371
3 Claims. (Cl. 50-209) The present invention relates to flat roofs generally and in particular to a roof assembly for an expansion oint in such flat roof.
An object of the present invention is to provide a roof assembly for the expansion joint in a flat roof which lends itself to ready installation on the fiat roof, one which is readily fabricated on sheet metal working machines, and one which is economically feasible.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a roof assembly for the expansion joint in a fiat roof which lends itself to etficient sealing of the joint in such roof, one which is sturdy in construction and has longlife characteristics, and one which requires no maintenance or care after installation.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawing, in which:
Figure l is an isometric view of a portion of a flat roof adjacent an expansion joint therein with the layers of insulation and roof covering cut away, and with the roof assembly of the present invention shown in installed condition; and
Figure 2 is a view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 and on an enlarged scale.
Referring in greater detail to the drawing, the reference numeral 10 represents the decking of a roof. When the decking is constructed, an expansion joint 12 is left between adjacent slabs of decking in order that the roof not buckle under the influence of heat and in order that the slabs of decking be permitted 'to expand without restraint.
A built-up layer of insulation is designated by the reference numeral 14 and is laid over the decking 10 from one end of the roof to the other. The insulation layer 14 includes protective sheathing layers 16, the insulation and the protective layers being of conventional construction.
The conventional roof construction also includes a layer 18, fabricated of impregnated roofing paper applied with a cementitious material such as asphalt, tar or the like. Finally, the top layer consists of loose gravel as at 20 in Figures 1 and 2.
The roof assembly of the present invention consists in a pair of panels 22 and 24 arranged in an upstanding converging relation and positioned so that the lower divergent ends thereof contact the portions of the decking 10 on opposite sides of the joint 12.
A nail 26, or other means, is used to fixedly secure an anchoring means or foot 28 which is carried by the lower divergent end of the panel 22 to the adjacent portion of the decking 10. Another anchoring means or foot 30 is carried by the lower end of the panel 24, such foot 30 being slidable upon the upper face of that portion of the decking 10.
A connector member 32 embracingly secures the convergent ends, designated by the numerals 34 and 36, of the panels 22 and 24 together, as shown in Figure 2, the
portion of the panel 22 adjacent the end 34 being formed to an inverted U-shape receiving between the legs thereof the portion of the panel 24 adjacent the end 36. A rigid bar 38 is positioned between the convergent end portions of the panels 22 and 24 and a nut and bolt assembly 40 extends through aligned apertures in the bar 38 and the end portions of the panels 22 and 24. The connector member 32 consists in two bendable strips 42 and 44 positioned with portions inwardly of their one ends overlying the exterior face of the convergent end portions of the panels 22 and 24, respectively, and having bendable extensions on their other ends projecting upwardly prior to final working, as shown to the left in Figure 1. The extensions are designated by the single numeral 46.
A first right angle block element 48 is positioned outwardly of the panel 22 so that the hypotenuse leg or face 50 is remote from the panel 22. The vertical leg or face 52 of the block element 48 is adjacent to and extends at an angle along the panel 22 and the base leg or face 54 extends at an angle to said panel 22 and along and is adjacent the upper face of the insulation layer 14. The juncture of the vertical leg or face 52 with the base leg or face 54 of the block element 48 abuts against the adjacent part of the panel 22 intermediate the ends thereof and abuts against the adjacent part of the insulation layer 14.
Another or second block element 56 is similarly arranged with respect to the exterior face of the panel 24 and also has its juncture of its vertical and base faces abutting the intermediate portion of the panel 24 at the juncture of the exterior face of the panel 24 with the top of the insulation layer 14, as shown most clearly in Figure 2.
An inverted V-shaped metal sheathing 58 extends over the secured convergent ends 34 and 36 of the panels 22 and 24 and downwardly over the hypotenuse legs or faces 50 of the first and second block elements 48 and 56. The V-shaped sheathing 58 is provided with a plurality of spaced slots 60, as to the right in Figure 1, through which extend the extensions 46 on the strips 42 and 44. The extensions 46 are shown to be bent over the upper faces of the adjacent sloping parts of the sheathing 58 and solder is applied as at 62 in Figure l to make waterproof the joining of the sheathing 58 to the extensions 46.
The nut and bolt assemblies 40 constitute fastening elements extending through the strips 42 and 44 and through the convergent ends 34 and 36 of the panels 22 and 24 for securing the strips 42 and 44 and the convergent ends 34 and 36 to the bar 38.
The built-up layer 18 of the conventional roof construction extends up over the hypotenuse leg or face of each of the block elements 48 and 56 and seals the block elements 48 and 56 against the weather.
It will be seen, therefore, that the roof assembly at the expansion joint in the decking 10 provides a means by which the decking 10 may expand and contract with the seasons without causing the roof layers to rupture. The decking 10, supported in the conventional way, is free to shift under the influence of heat and cold to close or open the joint 12 with the one foot on the lower end of one of the panels freely slidable upon the adjacent portion of the decking 10. Any expansion or contraction of the roof layers 16 and 18 is accommodated by the slight shifting of the block elements 48 and 56 ,and the overlapping portions of the layer 18 may shift on the outward face of the block elements 48 and 56 slightly under the sheathing 58 without rupturing if such expansion or contraction takes place.
