ILALLY. TRACE BUCKLE.
Patented Apr. 8
N, PETERS. Phoiu-Lillwgnphur. wmm cm D C UNITED STATES PATENT amen.
JAMES LALLY, OF-DES MOINES,IOWVA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS G. ORWIG, OF SAME PLACE.
TRACE-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,583, dated April 8, 1884. Application filed July 31, 1882. (No model.)
the side bars of the frame to cause the sliding loop and its wedge to rise relative to the crossbar at the rear end of the frame, for the purpose of clamping the trace fast between the wedge and cross-bar; in shaping'the sliding frame and loop and the rear end of the baseframe in such a manner relative to each other that the combined loop and wedge can be slipped in over the elevated cross-bar of the base-frame to slide upon the inclined planes of the side bars of the same'frame, and also in such a manner that the two parts can be detaehably connected without being liable to separate when the trace is adjusted in the buckle or removed therefrom, all as hereinafter fully set forth;
Figure 1 of my accompanying drawings is a top view, and Fig. 2 a perspective view, of my improved buckle. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the sliding loop and wedge. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 5 a perspective view of the buckle, a hame-tug, and a trace combined.
Jointly considered,these figures clearly illustrate the construction and operation of my complete invention.
a a, represent the base-frame, in which b b are the portions that form inclined planes relative to the cross-bar 0 at the rear end of the frame and the cross-bar d at the front end.
and lower side of the top portion, 6, and adapt ed in shape and size to allow the complete sliding frame to slip over the upwardly=bent rear end of the base-frame, and slide back and forth upon the inclined portions b, as required, to fasten or unfasten a trace'in the buckle.
f are the ends of the loop. They extend forward and downward at an angle relative to the loop portion e of the frame, toadapt the complete frame and loop to be moved in and out over the rear end of the base-frame. (Dotted lines in Fig. 1 indicate that loops may be formed on the ends of the part 2, as shown in the patent above referred to.)
h is a tongue projecting vertically from the center of the part 6. This tongue may be left off when desired, and the trace clamped fast at any point desired by means of the wedge e e.
'5 'i are lugs projecting vertically from the ends of the part c, to serve as guards in keeping a trace straight and in line relative to the buckle and the draft applied to the trace.
Heretofore guards have been formed on a wedge adapted to slide between the side bars of a buckle-frame, to keep the wedge in place on the trace; but my combination of guards with a wedge and a loop or frame that surrounds the buckle-frame and carries the wedge and guards on top of the side bars of the frame, to aid in keeping the trace straight relative to the complete buckle, is new and advantageous. In the practical use of my buckle, thus constructed complete in two parts, I fix a home tug to the front cross-bar, (l, of the base-frame and then slip the sliding frame, wedge, and loop forward over the rear end of the baseframe to rest upon the inclines b.
To connect a trace, 1 simply pass its front end forward under the cross-bar c of the baseframe and over the top of the combined sliding loop and wedge and allow the tongue to enter one of the perforations in the trace asI prevent short and damaging bends being formed in the trace.
By making the parts I) of the base-frame square relative to the frame, I can slip the sliding frame and wedge over the front end of the base-frame and retain it permanently, as stated in my prior patent above referred to.
I claim as my invention 1. In a buckle, the combination of a frame havi'nginolined planes b on its parallel side bars and upwardly or outwardly bent portions b at the rear ends of said inclined planes, and a sliding detachable loop or frame, eff, having a wedge, e, and a tongue, h, substantially as shown and described, to operate in the man- I 5 ner set forth, for the purpose specified.
2. The improved two-part buckle composed of the frame a b b 0 cl, and the combined sliding and detachable wedge and loop, and guards e ef f 13 t, constructed in the manner shown 20 and described, for the purposes specified.
