UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
HENRY G. PIGUERON, OF SPRING LAKE, NEW JERSEY.
ASH-SIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,447, dated April 8, 1884.
Application filed January 17, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it vita/y concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY O. PIGUERON, of Spring Lake, in'the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved AshSifter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The ash sifters or sieves usually employed are provided with holes in two opposite sides,
- through which holes a round stick or rod is passed to serve asa handle to reciprocate the sieve; but the holes weaken and split the sides of the sieves, the rod slips in the hand, and the sieve tilts very easily.
The object of my invention is to remove the r 5 above objections.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will'be herein- On two opposite sides of the sieve A. lugs B are fastened, which project upward from the upper edges of the said sides, each lug being provided with a square aperture, B. Through the said aperture a square rod, 0, is passed, which is provided at one end with a squared handle enlargement, D. The lugs B are fastened by screws or rivets, and are provided in the inner surfaces with shoulders resting on the upper edges of the sides. The rod 0 cannot turn in the lugs, and the sieve cannot tilt, as all the weight is below the rod. The rod cannot turn in the hand, as the handle part is squared. .0 The sides of the sieve are not weakened by apertures, and cannot split. The coals and cinders cannot pack between the rod and the screen, and the sieve can be emptied more readily than those in which the rod is passed through the sides.
The sifter is operated by holding the handle and shaking it over any suitable receptacle for the ashes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with an ash-sieve, of the lugs B, having squared apertures B, the squared rod 0, passed through the apertures B, and having a squared enlarged handle part, 5 5 D,substantially as herein shown and described.
HENRY C. PIGUERON.
