UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo 'SOLOMON R. MILLER, OF MOUNT UNION, PENNSYLVANIA.
' Tomes-roma.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,431, dated April 8, 1884.
Application filed August 27, 1883. (No model.)
To alZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SOLOMON R. MILLER, of Mount Union, in the county of Huntingdon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tombstones, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description. p
My invention relates to that class'of tomb-V stones on which photographs of the deceased 1o are held in suitable frames and the object of my invention is to provide cert-ain new and useful improvements in the said frame, where by the said picture will be protected from atmospheric and like influences, so that it can be preserved perfectly for any length of time.
The invention consists in a casing for receiving apicture, and adapted to be secured on a tombstone, which casing is provided with a rubber lining for holding the glass covering 2o the picture air and water tight. A washer or packing is held between the cover and the casing.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure 1 is a face view of myimproved pic ture-holder for tombstones, parts being broken out and in section. Fig. 2 is a crosssectional 3o elevation of the same on the line a@ m, Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a face view of a modication of the picture-holder, showing the cover partly re-V moved. Fig. i is a cross-sectional elevation of the same.
Acircularexternal]y-screw-threaded casing, A, is provided with two or kmore lugs, A, through which screws B or bolts are passed into the tombstone O, for the purpose of holding the easing on the said tombstone. The 4.o bottom and sides of the cavity in the casing A are provided with a lining, D, of rubber, and
on the edge of the casing, and ,the covering on the samethe picture E is placed, and the glass Fis placed on the picture and forced within the raised rim of the rubber lining, whereby the glass will be held firmly and with air and water tight joints within the casing A.
Neither air nor moisture can act on the picture, as the glass F and the rubber casing D protect it. A rubber washer, G, is then placed 5o cap H is screwed on rmly, and can easily be removed to view the picture. The square picture -holder shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is con structed in a similar manner; but in this case the cover .I is pivoted at its top, so that it can be swung to one side. The inner side of the coverlis provided with apacking-layer, K, of rubber, so that the cover will at all times form an abwlutely-close joint with the frame or the casing. The pictures can be made any desired size-that is, from a loc-ket-picture to a solar print. The covers carry the inscription Look at me, then cover my face,7 or words meaning the same, so that the pictures will never remain uncovered for any greatlength of time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tombstone having a hollow box or case made fast thereto, said case being provided with a round cover overlapping and screwing on an annular projection thereof, a rubber lining, D, with a raised rim, and a glass plate forced within said rim, as shown and de- 7 5 scribed, whereby a picture of deceased may be protected from air and moisture.
