in the county of Preble und Stute of Ohio, haveV v invented a new and Improved Mail-Pouch, of

which the following is u full, clear, and exact Y description.

The object of our invention is to provide a. new and improved inail-pouch which can be opened, closed, locked, and unlocked very readily, which is simple in construction, und not cpt to get out of order.

The invention consists in t inail-pouch provided in the edge of each side, at the opening, with a longitudinal pocket for receiving' welts secured on it sliding cover-piece, whereby the sides of the pouch ere drawn together and the pouch closed by passing the cover and welts into the pcckets. A hasp is secured on the sliding cover, and is adapted to he locked in place by nconibined lock and teg holder on the side of the pouch.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters oi' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.

The pouch A has each side formed of two thicknesses, B B2, at the inouth, und to the inner surface of euch thickness or layer B B2 n Welt, C, of leather or other suitable material, is secured, it slot being formed between the inner surfaces of the Welts.

To the outer surface of each layer B B2 n metal strip or plete, D, is fastened, which is provided with n bend or shoulder, E, et about the middle of its height. As the said plates are secured to the layers B Bf,'shoulders will also be formed in the layers B B2, thus for1ning pockets F between the bottoni edges of the ivelts and the shoulders. of the sides of the pouch in the manner described. A husp, H2, is held by n staple, H', 4on one end of the top piece, G, ond to the op posite end e handle-loop, J, is fastened. The plates or strips D extend beyond the side edge of the beg, as shown in Fig. 1.

A casing, K, is riveted to the outer sui-fece of the pouch at one of the side edges, and the Jsaid casing is provided with e hinged top, L, provided with n slot, L', und adapted to receive e tug or ticket, M. At the free end of the top L the sides of the casing K are provided with notches N, for receiving the cross-piece at the free end of the hnsp H2, und the top L is provided with n transverse groove, O, in its under side, at the free end. Under the swinging top L springs are provided for throwing it upwurd.v The casing K is provided with e. sliding bolt, l?, for locking the cover or top L on the casing K, which bolt con be operated by n lock inechnnisln contained in the part K of the casing.

The pouch is locked find unlocked in the following manner: To lock the pouch, the mouth edges of the pouch are pressed together, sind the cover G is drawn longitudinally over the month in such n manner that the welts lrl H pass into the pockets below the Welts C. Thereby the edges of the mouth oi the pouch will be Y held together and the pouch closed. The hasp H is then swung down, so that its cross-piece passes into the notches N of the casing K, and then the cover L is swung down to close the casing li and hold the hesp in the casing. If the cover L is swung down, the bolt l? snaps into an opening in e cross-piece of the cover and locks the cover on the casing. The hasp is thus locked in place and prevents withdrewing the cover-piece G from the longitudinal pockets in the edges of the inouth ofthe pouch. At the seme time it prevents tampering with the teg or exchanging or removing the snnie. If the pouch is to be opened, the cover L is unlocked and springs outward, the hasp H is swung up, and the cover-strip G withdrawn by means of the handle-loop J. As the plates or strips D project beyond the side edges oi' the pouch, the cover can be Withdrawn sufficiently to open the mouth of the pouch completely ,z but the cover-piece G- will still be held on the pouch by the projecting ports of the strips or IOO plates D. If the plate did not project, the cover-piece would have to be Withdrawn entirely from the pouch, or the mouth of the pouch could not be opened completely.

The has'p H can also be used as a handle in closing the pouch-that is, in drawing the cover-piece G over the mouth to close it.

By means of the above-described device the bag can be closed very effectually and rapidly. It will be almost Water-proof, and cannot open accidentally. l

Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with a pouch having longitudinalpockets formed in its edges at the mouth, of a cover-piece provided WithvWelts adapted to pass into the pockets and close the pouch, a hasp on the cover-piece, and means for locking the hasp on the pouch, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination, With a pouch, of a sliding cover-piece for closing it, a hasp on the cover-piece, and a lock-easing secured to the pouch and adapted to receive and hold the free end of the hasp, substantially as herein shown and described. v

3. The co1nbination,with a pouch, of a sliding cover-piece for closing the pouch, a hasp on the sliding cover-piece, and a combined lock-casing and tag-holder secured on the pouch, substantially as herein shown and described.

4. The combination, with a pouch, of the Welts C, the shouldered plates D, the coverpiece G, and the Welts H on the same, substantially as herein shown and described.

5. The combination, With the pouch A, of the Welts C, the cover-piece G, the Welts H, secured to the same, and of the shouldered plates or strips D, projecting` beyond the end edges of the pouch, substantially as herein shown and described.

6. The combination, with a mail-pouch, of a sliding cover-piece, a hasp on one end of the same, thelock-casing K, provided with notches N, the cover L, provided with the transverse groove O, and of a bolt-and-lock mechanism for locking the cover in place, substantially as herein shown and described.
