FAN ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,346, dated April 8, 1884.
Application filed December 26, 1883. (No model.)
To @Z5 whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ARTHUR H. Moons, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois7 have invented a new and useful Automatic Fan Attachment for Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a full and complete description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
'My invention relates to an automatic fan attachment for rocking-chairs, in which, by means of a rack and pinion and au-Xiliary mechanism, the vibratory motion in the operation of rocking .produces a reciprocating movement of rotary-fans.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a chair with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing portions of the fan mechanism. Fig. 3 shows a bayonet-catch sleeve., the' object of which is hereinafter set forth. Fig. 4.- shows a bevelgear modification of parts shown in Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a transverse section through line :c x, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a vertical section partially showing the lower portion of Fig. 3.
In the present example I have illustrated my fan attachment in connection with a chair lrnown as the patent rocker-i. e., inwhich the chair is mounted upon a base, onwhich latter the rockers of the chair have their bearings.
A represents the base aforesaid, and A represents the rockers of the chair.
The upper portions, A?, oi' the chair are sufciently outlined for the purpose of description.
Near the top of the chair-back are secured bearings a u., in which a shaft, A3, is located. In a position-corresponding to shaft A are forwardly-extending supports or arms a, on which are attached bearings a2. The latter serve as supports for rods or shafts A4, on which are located the rotary fans A5.
A represents a rack, and A a' pinion. The latter is secured on shaft Ai'. Hinged at a3 to a cross-piece. u, of base A is a vertical tubular shaft, AJ". Rack A is provided with a cylindrical Vlower termination or piston, ai', extending into the cavity of shaft AT.
To provide for throwing the fans in and out of gear the upper end of shaft AT is provided with a vertical slot, om, Figs. 5 and 6, and cylinder or piston a has inserted at right angles to its length a pin or projection, a6. In the tubular shaft A7 is also inserted a pin or projection, al.
To engage pins as and a7 and form a rigid connection between the shaft Al and piston a?,
a bayonet-catch sleeve, A8, is provided. The
latter is vertically slotted to a distance corresponding to the length of the vertical slot in the .tubular shaft Al. Transverse slots b and b2, corresponding in position to pins a. and ai, permit a lateral movement of sleeve As. 1When sleeve AS is so adjusted that its vertical slot corresponds in position to the vertical slot in shaft A?, the pin a, which corresponds in position thereto, would travel up 'and down in r said slots without producing any movement of the rack and pinion with relation to each other; but when sleeve AS is laterally moved so that pin o engages with slot b, (more plainly shown in Fig. 3,) a connection is formed that necessitates the movement of rack AG with relation to pinion A9 when the chair is rocked. Guide-bars b, between which and the rack A6 the shaft A3 passes, serve to keep said rack in p It is obvious that when a connection is A formed by means of sleeve A8, and a movement thus established between the rack and pinion when the chair is rocked, a reciprocating rotary movement is given to shaft A3, and, by means of the derrible coupling a or bevel-gear a, to shaft A, and consequently to fans A5.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is
1. In combination with fans A5, the shafts A3 and A4, rack and pinion A. A, hinged shaft A7, and flexible coupling a, or its equivalent, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
IOO
2. The combination of fans A5, shafts A3 p and A4, rack and pinion AG and A, flexible a', substantially as and for the purpose decoupling a, or its equivalent, tubular hinged scribed. y shaft A7 and the connectinfv-sleeve A8 subl stantallgf as and for the purgose specified. ARTHUR H MOORE 5 3. In combination with fans A57 the shafts Witnesses:
A3 and A4, flexible coupling (69,' rack and pin- JOSEPH RIDGE,- ion A6 A", hinged shaft: A77 and the hinged arms CHARLES O'. HENTHORN.
