FAN ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKING-CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,067, dated December 10, 1889.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES S.'MITTON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments for Rocking-Ohai rs, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of my invention to provide a contrivance adapted to be attached to rocking-chairs, particularly those of the baserocker type, which contrivance may be capable of holding a fan, and be so constructed and arranged as that in the ordinary act of rocking it may be operated to fan the occupant of the chair.
My invention consists of. a fan-holdin g shaft stepped upon a bracket or other suitable contrivance connected with the base and passed through a spirally-grooved sleeve connected with the rocking portion, the shaft being provided with a stud extending into said groove, so that as the chair is rocked a rotary reciprocating motion will be imparted to the rod to operate a fan attached. thereto, the device being suitably constructed to permit of the oscillation of the shaft to accommodate itself to the position of the rocking portion.
Reference is to be had to the annexed drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, the same letters designating the same parts wherever they occur.
Of the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a base or platform rockingchair with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 21's a sectional side elevation of a portion of the chair, the sleeve-holdi11gbracket, the sleeve, the fan-ho1ding shaft, its step, and a portion of the step-bracket, parts being represented as broken away. Fig. is a sectional detail showing a form of means that may be employed for securing the fan to the fan-shaft.
In the drawings, (I. designates the base or platform,and b the rocking portion of a platform or base rocking-chair.
c is a bracket of suitable form and construction for receiving and supporting vertically the foot of a shaft (1, so that the latter may have an oscillating movement imparted to it.
e is a bracket attached to the rocking portion I), and provided on its outer end with a sleeve f, having a spiral groove 9 formed therein, into which groove there extends a stud it, connected with the shaft (1, so that by moving the sleeve f up and down a rotary reciprocating motion will be imparted to said shaft. The shaft cl is provided on its upper end with a suitable fan-holding device. This may be variously constructed, as here shown. It consists of a bracket 71 secured at one end to the shaft d by a set-screw i, and provided at its opposite end with a recess adapted to receive a ring j, having a screw-threaded shank passed through a hole in the bracket and provided with a thumb-nut Z, as most clearly shown in Fig. 3. The handle m of the fan or may be passed through the ring j and clamped in position by means of the thumbnut Z. With this construction, the fan 71 being properly adjusted, the occupant of the chair may by merely rocking in the ordinary manner impart an oscillating up-and-down motion to the bracket 6, which will impart a rotary reciprocating motion to the shaft d by causing the edges of the spiral slot g to so act on the stud h as to rock or reversely rotate the shaft d, and thereby move the fan toward and from said occupant, the step being constructed, as before mentioned, so as to permit the shaft (Z to oscillate in acconnnodating itself to the position of the rocker.
The sleeve f is provided with a stud or trunnion f which is fitted to turn in a socket formed for its reception in the bracket 6, so that the sleeve is adapted to rock or oscillate independently on the bracket c.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the form and arrangement of parts comprisin g my impmovements without departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.
Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described a way of constructby the step or bracket, and a fan-holder at the upper end of said shaft, the latter oscillating with the rocking portion of the chair and being rotated by the action of the spiral groove on its stud, substantially as set forth.
2. The improved fan attachment for base or platform rocking-chairs, the same consisting of the step adapted to be attached to the base, the spirally-grooved sleeve adapted to be attached to the rocking portion, and the rod or shaft journaled in the sleeve and having a stud entering the spiral groove thereof, the lower end of said shaft being engaged with the said step, while its upper end is provided With an arm having a fan clamp or holder, substantially as set forth.
