FINGER-RING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,312.l dated April 8, 1884.

Application led January 30, 1884.

To all whom, it muy concern.-

Be it known that I, J OsErrr BULOVA, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York,have invented a new and useful Improvement in Finger-Rings, of which the following specification is ai'ull, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to an improved manner or' fastening raised letters or other Ornaments upon a finger-ring, stud, or similar article of jewelry.

Theinvention consists in the combination of a ring having perforated head and stone with an ornament having screw-pins entering said perforations, and with perforated nuts fitting over said screw-pins, all as hereinafter more fully set out.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of a tinger-ring provided with my improvement Fig.2 is a central section on the line a: x, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a bottom View of the ring.

The letter A represents a finger-ring, a being the shank, and b the head.

Into the head b is sunk a stone, c. This stone may have a straight or curved surface, and upon the same is placed aletter or other ornament, d.

To the letterd are rigidly attached two pins, e e, having their lower ends screw-threaded,

and extending through holes in stone candv head b up to the inner face of said head. One pin e is situated to the right and one to the left of shank a, as shown in Fig. 3. The holes through which pins e pass are tapering or shouldered, so as to be widest near inner face of' head b. In this way they form seats for countersunk nuts f. These nuts have a central perforation to 4receive the ends of pins (No model.)

l e e, as shown, and two small diametrically-op posite grooves, g g, so that theymay be turned by a key. The nuts f are, moreover, concave on their outer face, Fig. 1, to correspond to the concavity of head b.

In order to fasten a letter, d, to a ring, it is placed in position upon stone c, with pins e projecting through the tapering perforations, and the nuts f are screwed upont-he ends of pins e. As one pin is placed on either side of shank a, said shank will not interfere with the application of a key to the nuts.

I propose to make my improved fastening of the same proportions for the same class of jewelry, so that one letter, d, may be removed,

other letter.

By making the nuts f perforated I am enabled to make pins e of sufficient length for properly holding the parts. As the thickness of head b is necessarily limited, this is of considerable importance.

I do not claim to have invented a sleevebutton or other article of jewelry to which an initial is attached by a single pin screwed into the body of the jewelry, as such a construction is shown in Patent No. 157,348, granted to I. Pforzheimer, December 1, 1874; but

I do claim as my invention- The combination of ring A, having perforated head band stone c, with the ornament d, having screw-pins e e, and with the perforated nuts f, fitting over pins e, substantially as specified.
