WATCH-MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,204, dated April l, 188%.

Be it known that I, HIRAM B. Means, of Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Watches; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and eX- y act description of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in watches; and the invention consists in various details of construction by which the mechanism of the watch-movement is simplied.
My invention relates to watches of that class in which the barrel is stationary, except when winding; and it consists of details of construction all as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly claimed.
rlhe invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of the main bridge and winding-arbor, showing the edge of the driving-wheel and ratchet. Fig. 2 shows opposite sides of the winding-arbor. Fig. 3 shows opposite views of the mainspring-barrel. Fig. 4 shows the drivingwheel. Fig. 5 shows the diahplate. Fig. 6 is an elevation of part of the gearing, showing the manner of driving the hour-wheel.
A represents the winding-post, B the barrel, O the bridge, D thedriving-wheel, F the ratchet, M the face-plate, and X the edge of the dialplate, all shown in Fig. I.
Secured to the windingarbor A is a dat disk or plate, A, which turns with the arbor or post A in sink orrecess in the face of the bridge C. This plate is secured by screws or pins to the central part of the mainspring barrel, Fig. 3, so that the said barrel revolves with the post as the latteris turned. By this construction I am enabled to jewel the upper pivot of the driving-wheel, since the pressurein winding is all taken by the plate A', and there is no danger of breaking the jewel.
The barrel B is provided with a head, G, the edge of which is beveled and fitted to an annular groove in the inner surface of the barrel and at the end thereof, so that thehead comes ilush with the edge of the barrel.
rIhe driving-wheel D has at one side a hub or arbor, E, Fig. 4, and upon the other a pinion, II. {Ihe arbor E revolves within a hole in the head G- of the barrel in such amann'er that it has free revolution independently'of the barrel and its head. The driving-wheel is fixed on the arbor and revolves with it independently of the barrel, which is stationary, except while winding. rIhe mainspring is so connected to the barrel by its outer end that it is wound up from the outside by turning the barrel in the manner before described. The driving-wheel D turns in asink in the Vplate M, which is deepened at the center to receive the pinion I-I on such drivingwheel. The pinion II gears directly into the hour -wheel J, Fig. 6, the pivot of which runs in a bearing in a bridge, P, and holds the hour-hand. y
In Fig. 5 is shown the hour-dial divided into twenty-four spaces, around which the hand moves once in twenty-four hours. The minutehand is driven from a central pinion, o, which meshes directly with the main drive-wheel D. This hand moves around the ordinary dial. On the shaft of the minute-hand is fixed a gear, W, which, through lanternwheel and pinion Y Y, drives the secondhand, as shown in Fig. 5. The pivots of the three hands are thus placed on a line.`
By the construction shown I am enabled to I jewel every pivot of the watch, increasing its ease of movement and rendering it more durable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In combination, the winding-post, disk A in a4 sink or recess in the face of the bridge and attached to the stationary barrel, said barrel being provided with ratchet F beneath the bridge, the driving-wheel D, having an arbor, E, with bearing in the barrel, the spring, andthe lower bearing for the wheel D, all these parts being arranged in a watch substantially as described.
2. In combination, the winding-post, disk A in a sink orreccss in the face of the bridge and attached to the stationary barrel, said barrel being provided with ratchet F beneath the bridge, and with a head, G, the driving-wheel D, having an arbor, E, with bearing in the barrel, the spring, and the lower bearing for the wheel D, all these parts being arranged in a watch substantially as described.
