-JOHN A. BEAM, OF BADEN, ONTARIO, CANADA.
THRASHlNG-MACHINE.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,111, dated April 1, 1884:.`
Application lcd July 9, 1883.
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN A. BEAM, of Baden, in the county of -Waterloo, Province of Ontario, and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Thrashing-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. i
This invention pertains to improvements in thrashing-machines; and it consists ofthe combination, with crank-shafts and rakes having `teeth and notches, of perforated plates having iianges, said rakes and plates being mounted on the crank-shafts, the rakes having greater y throw than the plates, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a pant of this specification,` in which the same letters of reference indicate same or corresponding parts in all the iigures. Figure 1 is a plan view of the separating part of a thrashingfmachine constructed ac-` cording to my invention.` Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line a: x
`of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail of the strawcarrier and separator in cross-section.
I make the straw carrier and separator of alternate rakes a and separating plates b, mounted `onthe crank-shafts c, which are operated so as to thrust the straw upward along the carrier. The rakes consist of narrow thin boards set edgewise on the cranks, and having notches d and rake-teeth e on their upper edges, the teeth being set in the edges at the points of the notches and projecting upward. The separating-plates consist of narrow thin boards arranged flatwise, and having numer- .ous perforationsf for the grain to fall through 5 being supported on the plates.
also having flanges g projecting from the lower edges, which are to provide wide bearing-surfaces to lessen the wear against the sides of the rakes a; and said plates b are mounted on the cranks by supports h, which are to elevate' them, so that when the cranks of the rakes c, which are longer thanthe cranks of the plates b, descend, the teeth e will draw out of the strawon their backward movement, the straw The notches d in the rakes are mainly to provide openings through which the grain may escape under the flanges g when the rakes descend for the escape of the grain that may fallbetween the plates and the rakes under the flanges g. The
plates have a plain rib, i, extending along the middle of the upper surface, to divide the (No model.) Patented in Canada June 2, 1882, No. 14,893.
grain evenly on theln. From this straw carrier and separator the grain falls onto the grain-tables j and 7c, over which the endless carrier l carries the grain up from table j onto the separator 'm, and brushes it down from table lc to said separator, the plane of 'movement of the carrier being in the direction indicated by the half-arrows of Fig. 2, said tables being respectivelyT arranged with relation to the ascending and descending sides of -saidA carrier therefor. This separator m is sus-` pended by the rods n and connected by the rods o', as seen in full lines in Fig. I and in dotted lines in Fig. 2, to the eccentrics o, which are arranged to shake it forward and backward lengthwise of the machine to deliver the heads, short straws, and other coarse matters onto the shoe p, to be discharged through the spout q, while the grain falls through the. separator m onto the lower part of said shoe, to be discharged `into the usual receptacle after the chaff and other light matters have been blown away by the fan s.
The shoe p is mounted upon the laterallyvibrating springs u, suitably secured thereto and to the frame of the machine, said shoe being connected by a pitman or rod, u, to an eccentric, u2, which is fastened to a shaft, ua, (seen in dotted lines inFig. 2,)I which is de signed to be driven by a belt and pulleys (not shown) in connection with the shaft t. i
One of the cranks c of the straw carrier and separator is geared with the shaft t at the side of the machine, to which power may be applied by a belt on a pulley, t', or by any other approved means. I have found in practice that with these improvements the machine is simpler to make and `operates with less power, at the same time having greatly-increased capacity for work, and being capable of better work than others of the common construction and arrangement now in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The crank-shafts c and rakes a, having teeth e and notches d, in combination with perforated plates b, having flanges g, said rakes and plates being mounted on the crankshafts, the rakes having greater throw than the plates, substantially as described.
JOHN A. BEAM.
