GREEN 001m CUTTING MACHINE.
No. 296.066. Patented Apr. 1,1884.
I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. ROBERTS, OF WALLA WALLA, WASHINGTON TERRITORY.
, GREEN-CORN-CUTTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,066, dated April 1, 1884. Application filed October 15, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may 007L067'7b:
and the knife K on an enlarged scale.
chines, and it consists in the combination of devices herein described and claimed, and all of which I shall hereinafter fully explain, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my machine. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the plate J Fig. 3
is a vertical section of same.
The object of my-invention is to provide an effective machine for stripping corn from the cob for canning and domestic purposes.
'Ais astand or frame having an upright supplementary frame, B, in which a crosshead or follower, G, is adapted to reciprocate.
Depending from said cross-head are rods D, ex-
tending down through the table or stand, and connected with a vibrating treadle, E, under the table. Around the lower ends of these rods, between the treadle frame and the base of frame B, are relief-springs F, which take the jar off the ascending movement of said treadle.
G G are counter-weights suspended by ropes H, passing over pulleys h h, and connected with the treadle, whereby said treadle, after 1 being relieved of the downward pressure of the foot, may be raised again. In this manner the cross-head O is reciprocated, and in its downward movement is cushioned on springsI, set on frame A.
In the cross-head C is screwedaplate, J in e the center of which is a knife or cutter, K,
having oppositely-extending arms L L, sliding on said plate. This knife is annular in shape, and is split into semi-circumferences, I
the edges of which overlap, and are held toa drawer, O, in thetable.
The operation of my machine is as follows: The car, being of course previously stripped of its shucks, is impaled in an upright position on pin N. The treadle is then pressed down and the cross-head G descends; the knife encircles the cob and strips down the corn, which '55 Y roundlng 1t an open space communicating with falls into the drawer 0, from which, in due time, it may be removed. The weights then raise the cross-head for a repetition of the operation. The expanding property of the knife enables it to adjust itself to the various sizes of cobs.
I am aware that corn-cutting implements are known in which an expanding annular .knife operates .in conjunction with :an impaling-pin in a vessel, and I do not therefore claim such device, broadly; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V In a green-corn-cutting machine, the stand or table A, having spring-cushions I, supplementary frame B, central impaling-pin, N, and underlying drawer O, in combination with the cross-head 0, having depending rods D, the pivoted treadle E, and cushion-springs F, the counter-weights G, and the expanding annular cutter or knife K on said cross-head, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE W. nonnn'rs.
