FLIER FOR SPINNING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,974, dated April 1, 1884-.

Be it known that I, LEEDHAM BINNS, of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to overcome .the difflculty now experienced of the eye of the flier becoming notched by the wearing of p, the thread; and to this end my invention coni h, coming from the bobbin d, pass. The sleeve sists of meansfor causing the thread to have a lateral traverse along the leg or arm of the flier, so that it will nothave asingle contactpoint with the flier, as heretofore.
The invention also consists of a flier folded back upon itself to form a loop to act in conjunction with an eccentric plate for producing the lateral traverse of the thread, and also of the special arrangement of the flier and cocentric plate, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a spindle and a, bobbin having my new and improved flier applied thereto in section.

Incarrying my invention into effect I pre for to employ the metal eccentric plate a, which has formed or secured upon it the hollow sleeve 72, that fits tightly or loosely upon the spindle 0 above the bobbin 6,- or, instead of this hollow sleeve, the eccentric might be placed loosely upon the bobbin, in which case the sleeve b should be flanged at the bottom the same as at the top, and should flt tightly upon the spindle to preventthe eccentric plate from coming off from the spindle when in operation; or the eccentric plate might be attached to or formed upon the upper end of the bobbinl Upon the sleeve b is placed loosely the.

In operation, in spinning or doubling yarn or throwing silk, the thread or threads pass from the bobbin over the edge of the eccentric plate a, thence up through the elongated loop 9 of the arm 6 to the horizontal bobbin in front of the arms 6 of the flier. The plate a, being eccentric and revolving with the spindle, causes the thread or threads to have a sidewise movement or traverse to the extent of the eccentricity of the plate a, which constantly changes the contact-surface of the thread with the flier-arm, thus effectually preventing the thread from wearing a notch in the flier, and this is of great advantage, since it avoids the danger of the thread becoming broken and damaged by the notch, and greatly increases the durability of the flier-arm, thus avoiding delay for repairs and. expense for new flier-arms, and at the same time enables a greater speed to be attained thanby-the coinnion flier. Besides, the attachment is cheap and convenient, and is adapted for spinning or doubling all kinds of yarn and silk.
. Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a flier, of an eccentric plate for causing the thread to have a traversing movement, substantially as and for thepurposes set forth. v
2. The eccentric plate a, in combination with the loose button f, provided with the flierarms e, substantially as set forth.
3. The flier-arms e, having the elongated loops 9, in combination with means, substantially as described, for changing the point of contact of the thread with the flier, substantiall y as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The eccentric plate a, having the hollow sleeve [2, in combination with the flier-button held loosely upon the sleeve, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
