M. HERRINGW WATCH CHAIN TIP. V N0. 295,869. Patented Mar. 25, 1884.
;WTTNI55I5' m vrN ME;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY M. HERRING, OF NORTH ATTLEBOROUG H, MASAGHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO OSCAR M. DRAPER, OF SAME PLACE.
WATCH-CHAIN TIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,869, dated March 25, 1884.
Application filed December 17,1853. (No model.)
1'0 a, whom itmay concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY M. HERRING, of North Att-leborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Watch-Chain Tips, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to ornamental tips for watchchains; and the object of my invention is to secure the tip to the chain without using solder.
My invention consists in the provision of a chain-tip having one or more large apertures in its rim to receivethe Cl12l,l11-1llJl S, and also an aperture to receive aring which is secured to alink of the chain, and which serves as the means for securing the two "portions of the chain together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a portion of a watch-chain, showing the tip in position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the tip being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a top view of the tip. Fig. 4 is a bottom View of the same. Fig.5 is a front sectional view of a modified form of the tip.
In the said drawings, A designates the tip, which is of cup shape, one side being left open, and the. rim to being formed flaring from the closed side of the tip outward to the open side.
B designates an ornamental disk or faceplate, whichis set into the openface or side of the tip, andsecured therein by burnishing the edges of the rim over the edge of the disk,
the latterbeing held from falling inward by the flaring form of the rim.
0 designates the watch-chain, and O the section of the same which depends from the cross-bar D. The portion 0 of the chain is provided at its upper end with a small ring, a, which is soldered to the end link, 0, of the chain. The rim a is formed at its underside with an aperture, a, through which the link 0 is passed into the tip. At the opposite side of the rim a from the aperture a is formed a second aperture, a, through which the upper portion of the ring 0 is passed. The lower link, 0, of the chain-section Ois passed through the ring 0, as shown. After the tip has thus been secured to the chain, the disk B is secured to the tip as above described.
In Fig. 5 I have shown the tip formed with two oppositely disposed openings or apertures, a, and with an aperture. a below them. In this form of the tip the ring 0 is soldered to the link of the chain which lies within the tip, and a charmer other object may be secured to the projecting portionof the ring 0 by a link or ring passed through such projecting portion. Thus it will be seen that. the tip is secured to the chain without using any solder for the purpose.
"Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An improved watch-chain tip provided with apertures to receive the chain-link, and
also to. receive a ring secured to said link, the
said tip being secured to the chain without solder.
2. The combination, with the tip having the daring rim provided with the apertures a of, of the chain (1 G, the part 0 being provided with a ring secured thereto by solder, substantially as and for the purposes described 3. The combination, with a watch-chain,of
a tip provided with two'apertures adapted to be secured to the chain by passing a ring secured to one chain through the end link of the other chain, as described.
HENRY M. HERRING.
