APPARATUS FOR AND PROCESS OF CONSUMIN'G SMOKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,842, dated March 25, 1884-.
' Application filed December 28, 1883. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WVM. VOGEL, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improve- 5 ments in Apparatus for and Process of Consuming Smoke; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others I skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in an apparatus for and process of consuming smoke, and is designed to be attached to and operated in connection with steam-boilers and other furnaces of the ordinary construction.
The object of my invention is, first, to consume the smoke from the furnace; second, to separate the soot and other products of combustion from the smoke and depositthe same in the form of lamp-black of commercial value in the bottom of the cylinders; third, to conduct the gas resulting from the decomposition of the smoke into the furnace and to use it as an auxiliary to the fuel therein.
The accompanying drawings represent an apparatus embodying my invention.
Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, showing the apparatus attached to a furnace. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section onthe line as :r, Fig. 2. Fig. 4is a top plan View.
- A represents a cylinder that is made of boiler-plate or other suitable material, and has located in it and secured in place a number of small cylinders, B, grouped around a central cylinder, H, as shown. These cylinders are connected together at their upper and lower ends, as at A. An-inlet-pipe, Iris connected a e to one'of the cylinders B at the lower end thereof, and an outlet-pipe, K, is connected to the upper end of the cylinder H. A water-pipe, L, passes under the cylinder A, and is connected to the small cylinders, as at M. Oocks lhl allow the water to be introduced into or drawn from the groupof cylinders. Extending vertically through the small cylinders, and journaled centrally therein, are the shafts O, which have a number of radial beaters, P, projecting 50 from them. From the inner side of the cylinders project the arms Q, which are so arranged as to be out of line with the beaters 1?. Upon the central shaft, 0, is affixed a spur-wheel,
It, and to the shaft 0 are secured the pinions S, which mesh with the wheel It. By means of a pulley, T, the shaft 0 is rotated, and its motion, by means of the gear-wheels R S, is imparted to the shaft 0 in the cylinders. Gonnected to theinlet-pipe I is a blower, V, and communicating therewith is a cooling-cylinder, IV, of any suitable construction. In Fig.
2 I illustrate a furnace, O, of I which D represents the fire-chamber, E the grate, and F the ash-pit. A pipe, G, leads from the flues of the furnace to the cooler W, and the outlet-pipe K terminates at a suitable point below the grate E. u l
X represents water-indicators.
The operation of my invention isas follows: The small cylinders are filled with water up to a suitable point, as shown. The smoke passes from the furnace through the pipe G into the cooling-cylinder WV. From thence it is acted upon by the blower V and forced through the pipe I into the bottom of one of the'cylinders B, up through the water therein into the airspace Y, from thence through the opening Aeinto the adjoining cylinder, down through the water in said cylinder and through the connection A into the next adjoining one, and so on through the entire group. The smoke during its passage through the water in the cylinder is constantly operated upon by the beaters P and arms Q, and by the time it reaches the cylinder H is entirely decomposed. The soot gravitates to the bottom of the several cylinders and is there deposited in the form of lamp-black, of commercial value. During the passage of the smoke through the water in the cylinders a gas results therefrom, which is fed through the pipe K to the pit in the furnace, as previously stated. By means of my invention I consume the smoke, collect the valuable lamp-black, which wouldbe otherwise wasted, and produce a gas which is valuable as an auxiliary to the fuel in theiurnace.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The process of consuming smoke, which consists of forcing it through a series of vessels Ioo filled with water and subjecting it to the action of the heaters or agitators therein, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the cylinders B, water-supply pipe L, beaters P, and an inlet-pipe, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the cylinders 13 H, water-supply pipe L, inlet-pipe I, blower V, and an outlet-pipe, K,with beating devices that are adapted to operate within the cylinders, substantially as shown and described.
4:. The combination of the cylinders B H, water-supply pipe L, inlet-pipe I, blower V, cooler \V, and an outlet-pipe, K, with beating or agitating devices that are adapted to operate within the cylinders, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM VOGEL.
