CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,829, dated March 25, i884. l

Be' it known that I, GEORGE W. SMITH, of Des Arc, in the county of Prairie and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar- Couplings,4 of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates especially to that class of car-couplings wherein mechanismris employed for automatically putting the link in place in the draw-head and dropping the coupling-pin therein as the cars come together; and my invention has for its object the provision of a device whereby such automatic coupling is easily and unfailingly effected.
My invention consists, essentially, in a drawhead attached to or forming a part of a drawbar, said draw-head beingprovided at its low- I er side with a sliding lip, which may be drawn j out to catch and raise the link to place as the l cars approach each other.
The sliding lip is operated by means of an arm pivoted beneath the draw-head, a cord or chain passing from said arm to a convenient point for manipula-V tion. The coupling-pin is linked to an arm pivoted to the upper side of the draw-head, near the body of the car, a curved arrn having a projection thereon engaging with, the first-mentioned arm. This curved arm or lever extends through the draw-head, engaging at its lower extremity with a pin projecting `:from a lever-leading to a convenient point for manipulation. Ihe curved lever also engages with a straight bar recessed in the draw-head and projecting from the face thereof when the coupling-pin is raised to permit the link to enter.
The operation of my improved coupling is as follows: The cord is iirst pulled7 projecting the lip at the lower side of the mouth of the .draw-head, and the coupling-pin is raised by means 'of the lever, the movement of said lever throwing out the straight bar recessed in the draw-head. As the cars approach each other, the link strikes the lip, passing into the `mouth of the draw-head.
The draw-head upon the approaching car pushes the lip back to place, and vby striking the projecting bar trips the arm sustaining the coupling-pin, letting it fall to place, completing the process of )coupling without exposing the brakeman to Fig. 2.

H is the coupling-pin, passing through a perforation, a, in the draw-head and the slot e in lip E. Pin H `is attached to an arm, I, said arm extending to a projection, b, where it `is pivoted. J is a-bent lever or arm, pivoted in the draw-head, and having a projecting arm, K, passing beneath arm I.
L is a long lever fulcrumed upon the side of frame A, and lhaving a pin, Z, projecting therefrom, adapted and arranged to engage with or bear against lever J.
M is a bar recessed in the draw-head and taking 4against lever J, the movement oftbar M being regulated by a projection, m, thereon working in a recess in the side of the slot or recess.
Having now fully described my invention,l what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
