HAND SEED PLANTER.' l No. 295,762. l Paten-ted Mar. 25., 1884.
? ATTORNEYS UNITED Sri-iras `ALBERT HOAG, OF PEARL, VERMONT.
HAND SEED-PLANTER.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,762, dated March 2,5, 1884.
Application tiled November 14, 1883.` (No model.)
To all, whom t 717,607/ concern,.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT HoAG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pearl, in the county of Grand Isle and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Seed-Planters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled .in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
of a rea-r elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same with the lower portion of itscasing partly broken away. Fig.` 3 is a sideelevation with the casing partly broken` away. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional View. Fig. 5 isa transverse sectional view.; and Figs. 6, 7, 8, and 9' are detail views.
, i This invention has relation to improvements in hand seed-planters; and it consists in the 4 side bars or arms, c, are formed with flanges f,
over which the edge lips g of the sheetmetal front wall, C, of the seedchamber D are bent and secured. This wall G is of curved or partial cylindrical form. E represents the plane sheet-metal back wall of the chamber, which also engages theframe, being secured at its ends, one end being passed in frontof the side `flanges, f, and back of the lugsZ of the frame,
and the other end being secured between the anges f and the transverse bar e.
F indicates the spring-plate of the shoe.
fAt its upper end this plate is provided with `two or more perforations, arranged on each side in vertical` series. The plate is riveted to the transversebar G, which is formed with Figure l of the drawings is arepresentation 4main frame.
end lugs, h, engaging bearings in the edges of the sides b of the shoe, and arms lc, which extend toward the back of the shoe, to form guides for the plunger. This' bar is riveted to the side walls of the shoe.
H indicates the plunger, having a shank of cast-iron, composed of vertical bars m and transverse connections a. Along the center `of the upper portion of the shank is the governing-slot s, which engages the postor guide stud p, which is on the transverse bar e of the main frame. This post is provided vwith a head, r, which is" connected to it by a screw, t. The shank of the plunger may be made in several sections, if desirable. The lower p ortion of the shank above the plunger-plate is formed with an oblique cam-bar, o, of some what rounded i'orm, and designed to engage a notch-bearing, w, in the projection c of the valve K, so that when the plunger is moved up and down the valve will be operated. The valve K is pivoted in the valve-chamber casting L, which is secured to the lugs Z of the The top b of the valve-chamber casting is made concave, and has an opening, leading to the seed-chamber c in the'valve.
N represents the clearing-brush, which is secured to the top of the valve-chamber.
l? indicates a sheet-metal tube leading from the lower opening in the valve-chamber to the shoe. i
In the valve is located an adjustable block,
df, having an edgeserrated shank, e', which is designed to engage a tooth, g', of the valvebody. This block is adjustable, to increase or lessen the size of the seed-chamber in the valve. wire, e'.
The shoe of the planter being open at top and separated from the base of the seed-chamber by an interval, the operator can see, the
contents of the shoe at any time.
Having described this invention, what I' claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. The combination, with the skeleton frame and the seed-chamber thereon, of the open-top It is held in position by means of a y shoe at the lower end of the frame, and separated from the base of the seed-chamber by an interval, so that its contents can be inspected, substantially as specified'.
