VAGINAL SYRINGE.
Patented Mar. 25, 1 884.

l j UNITED STATES J AMES A. HAVVLEY, OF CANAND AIGUA, NEW YORK.
VAGINAL SYRINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 295,755, dated March.25, 1884.
r Application filed November 15, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. HliwLnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oan andaigua, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaginal Syringes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description-of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has for its object to furnish a vaginal syringe whereby water may be injected, and instantly and forcibly removed'or ejected as rapidly as injected, and whereby, when desired, a current of water may be obtained by the injection from one reservoir and the forcible and instantaneous removal or eduction to another reservoir, and thereby preventing the possibility of injecting the wombby the accumulation and pressure of the water,
and preventing the undue and painful expansion of the walls of the vagina by the same causes- It consists in the combination, with an ordinary speculum, of two tubes held in a plug snugly fitted to the speculum, and provided with suction-bulbs on both tubes, whereby the water may be injected by the one bulb and taken up by the other as rapidly as injected, and so that, if desired, the water may be thrown back from one bulb to the other, thereby creating a current.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ordinary speculum having my improvements applied thereto, and Fig. 3 is avertical section of the same. tion, showing the tubes supported by a sleeve or cylindrical plug inserted at the outer end.
of the speculum; and Fig. 4 is a detail view. a is the well-known speculum in common use. p
b is head-piece or plug, made preferably of elastic rubber, and snugly fitted into the spec- It is so fitted that it can be removed when desired.
b b are two pipes, preferably hard rubber,

put through openings in the head-piece, and having their inner ends arranged flush with the inner face of said headpiece. The outer ends of these pipes are projected, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and are slightly enlarged, so as to provide means for holding the ends of the flexibletubes or compressible bulbs. In Fig. 2 the pipes. are shown extended beyond the outer end of the speculum and supported by a disk or plug, b, of. any suitable material.
0 c are the flexible tubes, which are attached to the outer ends of the pipes b b. To the tubes 0 c are connected the bulbs d d:
The device, as shown in full lines, Figs. 1 and 3, is intended to be used in throwing water back andforth between the bulbs, and is specially useful in many diseases of the vagina and womb.
In dotted lines, Figs. 1 and 2, is shown the application of two ordinary syringes to my device. The bulbs and flexible tubes shown in full lines, Figs. 1 and 3, can be readily slipped off the pipes b,"and the ends of the tubes of the syringes shown in dotted lines be placed thereon, and by this arrangement a continuous flow of water can be given. The water will be taken up by the exit-bulb and discharged into a vessel prepared to receive it.
Bythe use of this syringe the cleansing of the vagina can be effected while the patient remains in bed, and there will result no soiland a take-up bulb, whereby perfect cleanliness is preserved.
The body or speculum a is adapted to fit snugly in the vagina and prevent water from dribbling outward along its outer side.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The improved vaginal syringe hereinbefore described, wherein an ordinary speculum or vaginal tube is fitted with a plug inclosing two pipes of suitable lengths, in combination with compressible and expansible induction and eduction bulbs, whereby water may be injected and forcibly withdrawn as rapidly as injected, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a speculum or vag inal tube, of the plug b, fitted to the inner end cibly withdrawn as rapidly as injected, sub- 10 of the speculum, the inflexible pipes b b, havstantially as described. 7 ing their inner ends inclosed by and flush with In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the inner face of plug 1), and having their oppresence of two witnesses, on this 14th day'of 5 posite ends projected out of the opposite end November, 1881.
