This invention relates to a drawing board having a pen and pencil holder which is adjustable horizontally and vertically or transversely to put the holder at desired locations on the drawing board.

The primary object of the invention is to provide for draftsmans and illustrators drawing boards an elficient and practical holder, for pluralities of appropriate pencils and pens, which can at will be adjusted along and/or crosswise of the boards to put the pencils and pens at locations relative to work on the boards wherein the pens and pencils are most easily accessible for use upon removal from the holder and returnable to the holder after use.

Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and realtively inexpensive arrangement of the character indicated above in which the holder and its supporting means are quickly and easily installable on and removable from an ordinary draftsmans or illustrators drawing board.

Other important objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein, for purposes of illustration only, a specific form of the invention is set forth in detail.

In the drawings:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drawing board equipped with a holder assembly in accordance with the present invention;

Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the holder per se; and

Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.

Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the numeral 19 generally designates a draftsmans or illustrators drawing board, mounted at a declining angle on a support, such as a table 12. The board has a drawing surface 14, side edges 16, a top edge 18, and a bottom edge 20.

Shown in association with the board 10 is a pen and pencil holder assembly of the present invention, generally designated 22, which comprises a horizontal slide bar 24, a pen and pencil holder 26 on the bar 24, and mounting means 28 for the slide bar 24.

The slide bar 24 is horizontally elongated and is preferably shorter than the length of the drawing board 10 with which it is to be used, so that its ends 30 are close to but spaced inwardly from the side edges 16 of the board Ill. On its upper side the bar 24 has a preferably dovetail rib 32 therealong on which the holder 26 is slidably confined. At its ends the slide bar 24 has suitable means, such as transverse bores 34, for slidably and securably connecting the bar 24 to the mounting means 28.

The mounting means 28 mounts the slide bar 24 on and above the drawing surface 14 of the board 10 for vertical or transverse adjustment across the drawing surface 14. The mounting means 28 herein shown, comatent O prises a suitable wire or cord 36 which is trained around headed anchors, such as thumb-tacks 38, secured in the drawing surface 14 at the upper corners of the board 10, with the free ends of the wire 36 secured to anchors, such as thumb-tacks 40 secured at the lower corners of the board 10, as in the lower edge 24 thereof. As a result of proper securement of the wire 36 to the board 10, the wire defines an upper horizontal flight 42 which is parallel to the upper and lower edges of the board 10, and vertical or transverse flights 44 which are close to and are parallel to the side edges 16 of the board 10.

In the construction shown herein, the Wire flights 44 extend through the bores 34 of the slide bar, so that the slide bar 24 rests upon the drawing surface 14 and is maintained parallel to the upper and lower edges of the board 10, so that the slide bar 24 serves the dual functions of a parallel drafting bar providing upper and lower straight edges .6 and 48, respectively, and of a supporting slide for the holder 26.

The holder 26 preferably is a longitudinally or honzontally elongated solid molded plastic block 50 having a flat bottom 52 from whose ends depend transverse flanges 54 having dovetail notches 56 therein which conformably and slidably embrace the dovetail rib 32 on the slide bar 24. The rib 32 being parallel to the edges of the slide bar 24, the holder 26 slides along the slide bar 24 parallel to the upper and lower edges of the board 10.

The holder body 56 preferably has flat and parallel ends 58 and is of irregular polygonal cross section, presenting an upper side 69 which slants forwardly and downwardly relative to the bottom 52, and a lower side 62 which is substantially perpendicular to the bottom 52, but which terminates at its lower extremity in and curvedly merges into a shoulder 64. The shoulder 64 reaches downwardly and terminates in a bottom edge 66. The upper side 60 and lower side terminate at their upper extremities in a flat top side 68 which is declined away from the drawing board surface 14. The narrowing of the block 50 from the needed full width of the bottom 52 of the block, required by the width of the particular slide bar 24 involved, and the convergent arrangement of the upper and lower sides 69 and 62 of the block, provide the body 56 with an elongated, relatively narrow cross section hand grip portion 79 involving the top side 68, which facilitates manual sliding of the holder 26 on the bar 24.

Opening through the top side 68 and spaced longitudinally therealong, on a line preferably to and near the upper side 60, are cylindrical pen and pencil securing sockets 72, which are graduated in diameters as may be required to properly and conformably receive the working ends of pencils 74 and pens 76 of different diameters. The sockets 72 preferably terminate at their lower ends in tapered or conical terminals 78 whose smaller ends 80 traverse the holder bottom 52, as shown in Figure 3. The conical terminals 80 provide seats for the usually pointed working ends of pencils and pens. The top side 68 can have numerals or other markings (not shown) thereon identifying sockets 72 of different diameters, and hence the pens or pencils fitting the sockets, so as to facilitate selection of and removal of pens or pencils therefrom and their return thereto.

It will be evident from the foregoing that the holder 26 is placed at a desired location relative to the slide bar 24- and the drawing board surface 14 by sliding the holder 26 lengthwise of the bar 24, and by sliding the bar 24 upwardly or downwardly along the flights 44 of the wire 36 of the mounting means. The bar 24 can thus be properly placed for drawing along its edges upon paper secured on the drawing surface 14 of the board I0, with theholder Z6 in an out-of-the-way or other desired position, or the holder 26 can be put in a desired location When the slide bar 24 is not involved in a the work.

Although there has been shown and described herein a preferred form of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not necessarily confined thereto, and that any change or changes in the structure of and in the relative arrangement of components thereof are contemplated as being Within the scope of the invention as defined by the claims appended hereto.

What is claimed is:

1. In combination, a draftsmans parallel bar, a pen and pencil holder, means mounting said holder on said bar for adjustment along the bar, said holder comprising a block having a bottom facing said bar, upper and lower sides spaced from each other at a distance less than the width of the block, and a top side at the upper extremities of the upper and lower sides, pen and pencil sockets in the block opening through said top side.

2. In combination, a draftsmans parallel bar, a pen and pencil holder, means mounting said holder on said bar for adjustment along the bar, said holder comprisingv a block having a bottom facing said bar, said block having upper and lower sides spaced from each other at a distance less than the width of the block, and a top side at the upper extremities of the upper and lower 4 sides, pen and pencil sockets in the block opening through said top side, said mounting means comprising a dovetail rib on and extending along the slide bar, and flanges V the top thereof, and second means mounting the block on the bar for adjustment along the bar and across the drawing board surface.
