i NiTED STATES PATENT (")EEICEe LAWRENCE COOPER WALSH, OE WEBSTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
`laAiLwAY-GATF..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,656, dated March 25, .1884, Application filed October 22,1883. (No model.)
T @ZZ whom L' may concern,.-
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE COOPER WALSH, of Webster, in the county of Vorcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railclear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
' Figure l is a side elevation of my improved gate, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation of my improvement, taken through the line m x, Fi i The especial object of this invention is to provide a simple and reliable means for closing railroad-crossings upon the approach of trains, and preventing people from attempting to cross railroad-tracks in front of moving` trains.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
A represents a railroad-track, and B is a Upon the opposite sides of the crossing B, and at the side of the track A, are set tWO posts, C, ata distance apart about equal to twice the width ofY the said crossing B.
To the tops of the posts O are attached side boards, D, to which is attached a roof, E.
F is a gate, which may be formed of horizontal bars connected by chains, or in any other suitable manner, andawhich is made of a length equal to the breadth of the crossing. In the case of wide crossings two gates F can be used, meeting each other end to end at the'center of the crossing.
The space between the side of the crossing B and the farther post Gis closed by a fence, G, of any suitable construction.
To the ,top bar of the gate F, at points preferably at a distance from the ends of the gate equal to one-third the length of the said gate, are attached the ends of chains H, the upper ends of which are lconnected by clevises I, or other suitable means, With two pulleys, J.
structed. When the free end of the track K is raised above a horizontal position, the pulleys` .I will roll down the said track, closing the gate.
N is a catch hinged to theside boards, D, in such a position that when the free end of the track is raised to close the gate the said end will strike the inclined lower end of the catch N, push back and pass the said end, and be caught by the shoulder of the said catch and 7o supported, locking the gate closed.
To the free end of the lever M and the lower end of the catch N arefattached, respectively, the ends of the wires O P, which may be led to the station, office, or some other desired place where they can be operated by the railroad ofcials toopen and close the gate; or
the said wires can be connected with levers i or other mechanism placed in suchpositions as to be struck at the proper time by the 8O engine, and operated to open and close the gate.
I have shown and described my gate as being applied to railroad-crossings, butit can be used with equal advantage in various other f places.
I am aware that it is old to construct gates provided with pulleys to roll on pivoted tracks, said tracks being provided` with cords and levers to operate them, and also provided with 9o latches for holding them in position and suitable cords for operating said latches, and I do not desire to claim, broadly, such constructions.
Having thus fully described my invention,` 4
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenti The combination, with the gate F, the pul-- With 55 leys, connections between said gate and pulrespectively, 'and' a suitable frame-Work for leys, and the track K, pvoted at its outer supporting the above devices, substantially as 1o end, and provided near its free end Wit-h a I set forth.
link' L of the pivoted lever M connected to 5 the track by said 11111;, and th vertical piv- LAWRENCE COOPER WALbH' oted latch N, for engaging the free end of the I Witnesses:
track, cords or Wires O P, secured to the free THOMAS SMITH, end of the lever and lower end of the latch, l
