FEED `FOR SEEDfDRILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 295,647, dated March 25, 1884.
i Application filed January 2, 1884. (No model.)
.To all whom it 771,@ 7/ con/cern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. JULIAN, of Springfield, county of Clark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feed for SeedDrills, of which the follow- -ing is a speciiication.
ment of the feed-regulating mechanism; and it consists in a corrugated cylinder iiXed to a feed-shaft and a sliding gate provided with projecting fingers that slide horizontally into the aforesaid corrugations in a suitable manner to make a smooth instead of a corrugated s urface, where the aforesaid sliding fingers lie in said corrugat'ions. The object of this is to obviate obstruction. from seed between the ends of the sliding lingers and the feed-case;
and to this end the ngers are also chamfered,
so as to allow the seed to slide over them, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the feed-case a rotates the corrugated cylinder b, that carries in its corrugations the seed to be distributed, and discharges the same at the outlet o in such proportions as accord with the length of its unfilled corrugatons. To fill said corrugations I use a sliding part, d, provided with fingers d', in any number to suit the number of corrugations in the cylinder b. The fingers d iit into the corrugations of the cylinder b, so as` to regulate the To cut off the feed through the egress-channel o, I use a slide, e, that is attached to and moves with the fingers d', and its free end should be in line with the free ends of said fingers. The cylinder b rotates with the shaft f, and the parts d and d rotate with said cylinder, while the part e remains at rest except when moved with the fingers d to change the feed of Useed.
I am aware that internal teeth have been used in corrugations formed around the circumference of a revolving cylinder; but with this arrangement an annular shoulder pushing against the seed opposesthe progress of the internal teeth when being moved up to cut off the feed.
Having thus described my inventiomwhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a seeding-machine, the corrugated cylinder b, revolving in a feed-case, a, in combination with a sliding cut-off, d,`that has fingers d', chamfered at their free ends, and a cut-off, e, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set mv hand this 8d day of September, 1883.
