D. TILTON.
CLUTCH GUARD.
Pa-fneril ted Mar. 25, 1884.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID Timon, on HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
CLUTCH-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,595, dated March 25, 1884. Application filed August 27, 1883. (N model.) Patented in England December [6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID Trnronflof Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement pertaining to a Clutch- Guard, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a top view. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3is aview in central longitudinal vertical section on the plane w m.
This improvement is one in that class of devices used in machines for communicating rotary motion, and at the same time letting the curs which is likely to break the machinery, the device being so adjustable that this slip or stop of the rotary motion may be made to oc cur with the exertion of any particular amount of force or power. Devices for this purpose have existed previous to the present improvement; and my improvement consists in such combination and arrangement and construction of the partsas effectuates the desired re sult in an improved manner. 1
The letter a denotes a rotary disk fast upon the shaft 12, and driven by a belt running upon a the pulley e. On the side of this disk a pawl, cl, is pivoted, which pawl is provided with a tooth,d. This tooth fits into a correspondingshaped mortise, e, made in the periphery of the disk 6, which is loose rotarily upon the shaft d, and bears upon its side, rigid with it and appurtenant to it, a pinion, f. This pinion f is intended for meshing into a gear, which gear drives other machinery, not necessary to be shown here.
parts slip or stop when some obstruction oc- The letter h denotes an extension spiral spring, which particular kind of spring is an essential feature of this presentimprovement. This spring holds the tooth on the pawl into the mortise in the disk e, and ordinarily by this contact of this tooth and this mortise the rotary motion which the disk a has is imparted to the disk e and the pinion, and thus on to the machinery driven by the gear which meshes into the pinion f; but if some obstruction to said machinery occurs likely to break the same, then the spring h permits the free end of the pawl to rise, lifting the tooth out of its mortise, so that the disk a will continue to rotate without rotating the disk (2 and the machinery driven by it. As I have already said,
other devicesihave previously been used for this purpose; but experience shows that a hinged pawl held to its work by an extension spiral spring operates where all the previous devices have failed to operate, and it is this particular construction of parts which forms my improvement.
I claim as my i'mprovement In a guard-clutch, the combination of the rotary disk 4, the toothed pawl (Z, pivoted on the side thereof, the peripherally mortised disk e, bearing the appurtenant pinion f, and the extension spiral spring h, all substantially asdeseribed, and for the purpose set forth.
