6 Claims. (Cl. 206-4514) This invention relates to display devices and is more particularly concerned with improvements in a holder of tray-like form for displaying on .a supporting surface and in an attractive manner an article-of merchandise such as a bottle, jar or similar packaged product.
It a general object "of the invention to provide a tray-like display device formed .from paperboard or "similar foldable material which will support in an upright position a product packaged in .a bottle or similar .receptacle .having a :tlanged or beaded bottom edge with the tray being formed to provide bottom, back :and side wall 'members positioned in a product framing arrangement and with a product retaining panel extending inwardly above the bottom and having an aperture therein of :lesser area than the crosssectional area at the base of the product receptacle thereby supporting the latter in upright and locked position therein when the base is inserted through the aperture I-in the product retaining panel.
It is a more specific object-of the invention to pro vide a display container for an article of merchandise such as a bottle, can or jar which is characterized by an outwardly extending bead on the bottom edge thereof, which display container is rforrned firom a :blank of paperboard material cut and .creasedto provide x-a series of connected panels forming, when folded, to :double thickness back wall having an upward extension i-projecting above the article which is supported-therein, .a bottom wall integral with and extending forwardly of the lower edge of the back'wall, a pair of side walls which are integrally hinged to lower portions of the side edges of the back wall and connected :by hinge flaps to the bottom wall, the-panels forming the sidewalls being folda'ble about diagonal lines inwardly of the container and into engagement with an article retainingpanel-whieh is integral with theouter edge :of the bottom wall and folded inwardly above the same, the article retaining panel having an end flap extension thereon and a *tab formation cut therefrom which is foldable about the hinge connection of the same with the end extension, the latter being folded :to position the isamein upstanding relation-adjacent-the lower portionof the back wall and being retained between the same and the back wall by engaging the edge thereof in a-slit out transversely in the back wall, the aperture :formedin the article .retaining panel by cutting the .tab therefrom being of the same general shape but smaller 'in :area than the cross sectional area of the bead form-ing portion of the bottom of the article retained therein.
It "is another object of thevinvention to provide a tray-like container for displaying an article of merchandise such as a bottle or jar having a beaded lower edgewherein a back wall, a "bottom wall and an article retaining panel are provided together with connecting side walls, the article retaining panel'being above the bottom wall and being provided with #a-n aperture for receivingdhe'bottom of the article-tribe displayed'which aperture is of lesser size than*the-cross sectio naldiameter of the article immediately above the base thereof whereby, whenthe base of t'he 'article is forced --through nited Stes Patent the aperture the article will be retained in upright position in the tray and cannot be readilyremoved therefrom except by applying sufficient force or pull on the article to stretch the opening and allow the base to pass therethrough.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from a consideration of the display device which :is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings wherein:

The display device "or :receptacle 10 is formed from a blank '13 (Fig. 4) of paperboard stock or similar :fiexible material of suitable'weight and flexibility and which has a main body portion of igenerallytreetangular shape. The blank 13"is rout and scored to provide ta tback forming panel 14 and'an sadjoiningfbottomforming panel 515 which are separated from each other by "the transverse score line .16. :Preferably, :an end extension panel 17 is included which isintegr-al with the top :forming edge :of the back panel i4 and is separated therefrom by the transverse score'line 1T8,the.latter being adapted to "form the uppermost 'edge of the device. The top extension panel 17, when provided, is of substantially the same shape as the upper or :major portion of the :back forming panel :14 and is adapted to be folded-aboutthe score line 18 into engagement with thefrontface of the-back panel '14 to provide a double thickness upstanding .display member in the erected device. The bottom :wall forming panel 15 .is, separated from an "integral article retaining panel 19 by a transverse score line =20 which is adapted to form the frontedge of the bottom .tray portion of the device. The blank 10 includes side'wings 27 of identical form which are integral with the back wall forming panel 14 and extend along the lower portions of the edges thereof, being separated therefrom by oppositely disposed score lines 28 which diverge somewhat in the longitudinal direction of the blank and toward the bottom wall forming panel 15, terminating at the transverse score line 16. Each of the side wall forming wings 27 is subdivided by two diagonal score lines 29 and 30, which extend outwardly from the ends of score line 28, crossing each other at approximately a right angle in a central portion of the panel, and a generally transverse score line 31 which extends outwardly, from the end of the transverse score line 16. The score line 31 separates, from the remainder of the panel, a corner connecting tab portion 32 which extends along the end or side edge of the bottom wall forming panel 15 and is separated therefrom by a cut-out portion as shown. The remainder or side wall forming portion of the wing 27 is subdivided by the crossed diagonal score lines 29 and 30 into four generally triangular sections, with these sections being adapted to be folded upon each other along the score line 29 in initially forming the device in the knock down condition (Fig. and along the score line 30 in the final erected condition (Fig. 1) of the device. The back wall forming panel 14 is provided adjacent the bottom portion thereof and spaced from the transverse score line 16 with a pair of relatively short transverse cutting lines 35 and 36, the former being generally semi-circular and the latter having a semi-circular center portion.
' In folding the cut and scored blank 13 to form the device the end panel 17, when employed, is first folded about the transverse score line 18 and adhesively secured to the fact of the panel 14 to provide the back wall member. The side wings 27 are folded on themselves about the diagonal score lines 29 to bring the connecting tab members 32 into inwardly extending relation as shown in Fig. 5. Adhesive is applied to the "uppermost surfaces of the connecting tabs 32 and thereafter the end section of the blank, in which the panels 15, 19 and 23 are formed, is folded about the transverse score line 16 to bring the inner face of the bottom wall forming panel into engagement with the adhesive coated connecting tab members 32. This completes the initial folding operations on the blank and leaves it in the flat folded or collapsed condition in which it is supplied to the user.
The device is set up or placed in its article receiving condition by first pulling the end flap 23 away from the back wall forming panel 14 and simultaneously moving the side wall forming wings 27 toward each other to bring them into a plane approximately normal to the lower portion of the back wall forming panel 14 which places the bottom wall forming panel 15 in a plane normal to the back wall forming panel 14 at the bottom edge thereof. Thereafter, the connected panels 15, 19 and 23 are folded inwardly about the transverse score line 20, with the tab 24 being first folded upwardly about the score line 21 into parallel relationship with the end flap 23, and the end flap 23 is folded about the end sections 37 of the score line 221 to bring it into a generally upright position immediately adjacent the lower portion of the 'back wall 14 as shown in Fig. 2. The folded panels 19 and 23 are forced toward the bottom wall panel 15 until the uppermost edges of the tab 24 and the panel 23 are in position to engage in the slit 36, the latter being opened up by pushing in on the adjoining material of the blank above the same. The outer portions of the side wings 27 which extend beyond the diagonal score line 30 are then folded inwardly to bring the edges thereof into engagement with the folded in article retaining panel 19 and the upstanding end extension panel 23. Thereafter, the article 11 is positioned in the device 10 by forcing the flanged bottom edge 12 through the aperture 38 formed by cutting and folding the tab 24 out of the panel 19. The aperture 38 is preferably the same shape and somewhat less in area than the area of a transverse section taken through the bead 12 on the article 11 so that when the bottom of the article 11 is forced through the aperture 38 it will be effectively locked therein by engagement of the head 12 with the bottom surface of the panel 19 around the edge defining the aperture 38 and the bottom edge of the fold between tab 24 and end flap 23. The lower slit 35 which is provided in the back wall 14 permits the tab 39 formed thereby to be pressed inwardly to force the folded bottom edge of the panel 23 and tab 24 into engagement with the bead 12 on the article 11 and assist in retaining the same in position in the aperture 38, the panel 23 and tab 24 both being secured at their upper edges in the slit 36 in the back wall 14.
With the device 10 folded as described, the flanged article 11 will be effectively retained in the aperture 38 so that it cannot be readily separated from the device without applying suflicient force to enlarge the aperture and in most instances substantially rupture the material around the same.
The device is not limited to use with any particular article so long as the flanged or beaded bottom is provided thereon. The size and shape of aperture 38, of course, depends upon the size and shape for the particular article for which the device is designed. Also, if desired, the side wall forming sections may be omitted in forming the device.
I claim:
1. A display device for supporting in upright position an article which is characterized by an outwardly projecting flange on the bottom edge thereof, said device being formed of paperboard which is cut and folded to provide a bottom wall panel, a back wall panel integrally hinged to the back edge of the bottom wall panel and extending upwardly from the back edge of the bottom wall panel, an article retaining panel integrally hinged to the front edge of the bottom wall panel and folded inwardly about the inner edge thereof above the bottom wall panel, an integral extension flap hinged on the opposite edge of the article retaining panel and movable to an upstanding position adjacent the lower portion of the back wall panel, a tab forming member cut from said article retaining panel and folded upwardly between said extension flap and the back wall panel to provide an article receiving opening in said article retaining panel which is of a size to accommodate the article at the cross section thereof adjacent the flange on the bottom edge of the article, the back wall panel having a tab retaining transverse slit cut therein for receiving the uppermost edge of said tab forming member to limit the upward movement of the article retaining panel to a predetermined position in spaced relation above the bottom wall panel and side walls formed from generally rectangular panels having adjoining edges thereof hinged to the side edges of the bottom and back wall panels, respectively, said side wall forming panels having marginal portions extending along the opposite adjoining edges folded inwardly into engagement with said article retaining panel whereby the bottom of the article may be inserted through the aperture in said article retaining panel and the article will be retained therein.
2. A paperboard display device for supporting in upright position an article which is characterized by an outwardly projecting bead on the bottom edge, said device being formed of a single blank of material which is cut and folded to provide a bottom wall, a back wall hinged to the back edge of the bottom wall and extending upwardly from the bottom wall, an article retaining panel member integrally hinged with the front edge of the bottom wall and folded inwardly above the bottom wall, an integral extension flap hinged on the inner edge of the article retaining panel member to an upstanding position inwardly of the back wall, a tab forming member cut from said article retaining panel member and folded upwardly between said extension flap and the back wall and providing an article receiving opening in said article retaining panel member which is of a size to accommodate the article at the cross section thereof adjacent the beaded bottom portion of the article, a tab retaining slit cut in said back wall for engaging therein the uppermost edge of said tab forming member to limit the upward movement of the article retaining member to a predetermined position in spaced relation above the bottom wall and side walls having adjoining edges thereof hinged to the side edges of the bottom and back walls, respectively, whereby the bottom of the article may be inserted through the aperture in said article retaining panel member and the article will be retained therein.
3. A display device for supporting in upright position an article which is characterized by an outwardly projecting flange on the bottom edge, said device being formed of a single blank of flexible paperboard material which is cut and folded to provide a bottom wall, a back wall extending upwardly from the back of the bottom wall, an article retaining panel member extending from the front of the bottom wall and folded inwardly thereof above the bottom wall, an end extension flap hinged on the article retaining panel member to an upstanding position adjacent the back wall, said article retaining panel member having a tab forming member cut therefrom and folded upwardly between said end extension flap and the back wall with the opening in said article retaining panel member which results from cutting the tab therefrom being of a size to accommodate the article at the cross section thereof adjacent the flange on the bottom edge of the article, said back wall having a tran verse slit for engaging therein the uppermost edge of said t-ab forming member to limit the upward movement of the article retaining member to a predetermined position in spaced relation above the bottom wall and side walls having adjoining edges thereof connected to side edge portions of the bottom and back walls, respectively, with portions thereof folded inwardly above said article retaining panel member, whereby the flanged bottom of the article may be inserted through the opening in said article retaining panel member and the article will be retained therein against accidental removal therefrom.
4. A display unit comprising a paperboard display device and an article which is characterized by an outwardly projecting bead on the bottom edge, said display device being formed of a paperboard blank which is cut and folded to provide a bottom wall, an integral back wall extending upwardly from the rear of the bottom wall, an article retaining panel member integral with the front edge of the bottom wall and folded inwardly above the bottom wall, an integral end flap hinged to the article retaining panel member and positioned in upstanding relation inwardly of the back wall, a tab forming member cut from said article retaining panel member and folded upwardly between said end flap and the back wall and providing an article receiving opening in said article retaining panel member which is of substantially the same shape and of a size to accommodate the cross section of the article adjacent the beaded bottom portion of said article, said article being seated in upright position in said opening, a tab retaining slit cut in said back wall for engaging therein the uppermost edge of said tab forming member to limit the upward movement of the article retaining member to a position in which the inner portion is in spaced relation above the bottom wall, and side walls having angularly related edges hinged to the side edges of the bottom and back walls, respectively, whereby the article is locked in the aperture in the article retaining panel member.

A paperboard blank for forming a display device which is adapted, when set up, to support in upright position an article which is characterized by an outwardly projecting flange on the bottom edge thereof, said blank being cut and creased to provide a bottom wall forming panel, an adjoining back wall forming panel, an article retaining section integral with the bottom wall forming panel, and side wall forming wings extending from opposite side edges of the back wall forming panel above the bottom wall panel, said article retaining section being subdivided on a transverse score line into an article retaining panel member, an end flap extension member and a tab forming member cut from said article retaining panel member by a curved generally transverse cutting line which has its ends terminating at the transverse score line separating said end extension flap from said article retaining panel member to provide an article receiving opening in said article retaining panel member which is of a size to accommodate the article at the cross section thereof adjacent the outwardly extending flange on the bottom edge of the article, said back wall forming panel having a tab retaining transverse slit cut therein which is spaced from the transverse score line separating the back and bottom wall forming panels a distance somewhat greater than the dimension of the tab forming member in the longitudinal direction of the blank, and said side wall forming wings comprising generally rectangular panel sections which are each subdivided by crossed diagonal score lines and a transverse score line into four triangular portions and a flap portion, with the flap'portion extending along the side edges of the bottom wall forming panel and being separated therefrom by a generally V-sh-aped out which opens the direction of the article retaining panel member.

A collapsible display device for supporting in upright position an article, which is characterized by an outwardly projecting bead formation on the bottom edge portion thereof, said device being formed of flexible sheet material which is cut and folded to provide a bottom wall member, an upstanding back wall member hinged to the one edge thereof, side walls hinged to the adjoining edges of the bottom wall member and toadjacent portions of the side edges of the back wall member having cross diagonal score lines extending from opposite ends of the hinge line connecting the side walls with the bottom wall, said side walls being foldable on one of said diagonal fold lines to bring said device into flattened condition and an outer portion of said side walls being folded inwardly about the other one of said diagonal lines when the device is in erected condition, an article retaining panel member hinged to the edge of the bottom member which is opposite the hinged connection of the bottom wall member with the back wall member and foldable inwardly toward the back wall member, said article retaining panel member having an aperture which is of a size to accommodate the article at the cross section thereof adjacent the beaded bottom edge portion of the article, and an end panel hinged to said article retaining panel which is foldable into upstanding generally parallel and spaced relation inwardly of said back wall member, said back wall member having a slit forming a tab for engaging with the uppermost edge of said end panel.
