J O SEPH E. HOPPEN, OF NEW'ARK, NEW JERSEY.
HANGER FOR SHAFTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295.553, dated March 25, 1884.
Application filed October 10, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOSEPH E. HorPEN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers for Shafting; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists in a novel construction, arrangement, and combination of devices whereby provision is made for adjusting the journal box or bearing vertically with a parallel motion, vertically with an' oscillating motion, horizontally with an oscillating motion, and horizontally with a lateral motion,
. as hereinafter more particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a hanger embodying myimprovements. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken in the line as m of Fig. 1. r Fig. 3 is a bottom view, and Fig. 4 is a detail View.
A represents a casting forming the baseplate of the hanger, provided with bolt-holes a a, for attaching it to a ceiling, beam, or rafter.
At the points usually occupied by the downwardly-extending arms or branches of an ordinary hanger are two bosses, B B, having holes extending entirely through them and through the plate A. In these holes are fitted the upper ends of two wrought-iron rods, G G, which may be fastened in place either by screw-threads, by casting, or by riveting down the upper ends of the rods,as shown. The portions of the rods 0 below the bosses are screw-threaded, and on them slides a horizontal plate, D, provided with holes, through which said threaded rods pass, with jam-nuts e e above the plate and fastening-nuts f f below it. The journal-box G is made in two halves, in the usual form, the upper half being provided with an oiler, g. The dripcup d-is carried by a rod screwed into the plate D. The lower half of the journal-box G is carried by a plate, H, which is attached to the plate D by bolts h, passing through longitudinal slots t in the plate D. The bottom of the plate H is convex, and it rests in a concave seat in the top of the plate D, The plate D, which slides on the rods 0, has a round hole for engagement with one of said rods, and the other hole is elongated laterally, so as to form a slot, j, through which the other rod works. In the edges of the plate D, at the opposite ends of the slot j, are two setscrews, K K.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The base-plate A is attached to the ceiling or beam by bolts passed through the holes a in the usual manner. The parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1, if it is desired to raise or lower the journal-box G vertically with a parallel motion, the jam-nuts e and fastening-nuts fare raised or lowered until the proper height is attained, and are then tightened, so as to hold the box at said height. In order to adjust the box G vertically with an oscillating motion, the plate H is moved in its concave seat until the proper level is attained, and then secured by tightening the.
nuts on the bolts h. To adjust the box horizontally with a lateral motion, the plate H is moved longitudinally and secured by tightening the nuts on the bolts h. To adjust the box horizontally with an oscillating motion,
the set-screws K are tightened or loosened, so
as to bear more or less against the rod 0, working in the slotj.
When the hanger is to be used upon a floor, bench, table, or other low position, it is simply reversed, so that the parts will be in opposite directions to what is shown in the draw- 1n s.
If desired, a plate, M, may be introduced between the plate D and one of the jam-nuts, e, so as to provide for the attachment of a belt 3. The combination of the rods 0, plate D,.
provided with the slot j, and the set-screws K K, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
