Still more particularly, the invention deals with frames having integrally protruding pivot and coupling ends, the coupling ends being fashioned to retain pressure plates thereon.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a pad made according to my invention, with part of the construction broken away.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged partial section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a partial section on the line 4-4 of Fig. l on an enlarged scale.
My invention deals with stamp pads, generally of the type and kind disclosed in my prior Patent Number 2,709,415 issued May 31, 1955 and, more particularly, to the structure of an inking pad for use in connection with stamp pads of this type and kind.
In the drawing, I have shown a pad employing two similar oblong rectangular frames 10, These frames can be formed of any suitable material but, in the present illustration, are illustrated as molded plastic frames having at the corner portions thereof, protruding lugs 11 at g drawing, tobe cemented or otherwise secured together,v
one long side and lugs 12 at the opposed long side. The I lugs 11 form pivot lugs for pivotal mounting of the pad in a stamp pad, as shown in the patent referred to above; whereas, the lugs 12 of the frames 10, 10 collectively form supports for hold-down plates 13, generally similar to the plates of said patent, the plates being retained on the lugs 12 by upsetting parts of the lugs to form upper and lower retaining members '14, as clearly noted in Fig. 4 of the drawing. In assembling the pad, each frame 10, 10 is covered with fabric coverings or facings 15, 15' having flange edge portions which are folded around the rails of the frame and cemented or otherwise secured to inner adjacent surfaces of the frames, as seen at 16, 16' in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The facings 15, 15' are cutout at corner portions thereof, as seen at 17 in Fig. 1 of the drawing, to provide clearance for the lugs 11 and 12.

After placing the filler within the frames, the frames are then secured together at the corner portions and at the cutouts 18 in any desired manner and, as a result, a complete pad structure having the protruding lugs 11 and 12 at corner portions thereof will be formed.
The next step in the method consists in mounting the aperture plates 13 on the lugs 12 and then fashioning the exposed portion of the lugs 12 to form the retaining members 14, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing. The pad is now completed and ready for assemblage in a stamp pad of the type and kind disclosed in my prior patent hereinbgfore mentioned or in conjunction with any other type of pad suitable for mounting an inking pad of the type and kind herein disclosed.
Normally, in the construction of inking pads, this operation. has been very costly from the standpoint of labor requirements in sewing or otherwise securing the facing sheets on frames while fillers have been arranged in the frames. Quite often, faulty stitching operations have resulted which would not present a firm and smooth stamp surface on the pad which would necessitate disposal of the pad or which would result in a poor pad surface, if put into use.
With my improved construction and method of procedure, an inking pad can be quickly and economically produced with a definite control of the facings 15, 15 so that the resulting pad will, at all times, have smooth surfaces. In this connection, it must be understood that the pad is reversible in the holder, so that both surfaces of the pad are utilized to provide the longest possible wear.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.
