TUBE-CUTTER.
SPECIFIGATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,307, dated March 18, 1884.
Application filed January 14, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NATHAN I. Town, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tube-Cutters, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to tube-cutters of the class intended to be passed within a tube and expanded, so as to out from the inside, and is especially intended for use in cutting tubes or fines from steam-boilers.
The invention consists in a mandrel which is intended to enter the tube to be operated on, said mandrel carrying cutters and mechanism to expand or contract the same, (so as to be thrown into or out of operafiom) as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sideelevation of myimproved cutter, parts being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a similar view in a plane at a rightangle to that of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the mandrel and attachments.
The mandrel A is a little smaller than the inside diameter of the tube to be cut. This mandrel is cored out centrally for the reception of a rod, 0, and screw-threaded for apart of the distance. A mortise through the mandrel from side to side, near the end of the axial bore, serves as a receptacle for the cutters D D. Gutters D D, in the form of bell-crank levers, are pivoted in the mandrel, as shown, so that when turned on their pivots the cuttingpoints (I d may be projected beyond the line of the surface of the mandrel, or drawn back within the mortise. The rod 0, which screws out and in in the bore of the mandrel, engages with the ends of the cutters D D by means of two buttons, 0 c, on said rod, so as to turn the cutters on their pivots by a positive movement when the screw-rod is turned out or in. A groove in the end of rod 0 will serve the same purpose as the buttons. The rod 0 maybe screwed out and in relatively to the mandrel or casing A by means of hand-wheel F, or in other suitable manner.
The entire tool may be revolved by the handle H, which carries apawl to engage ratchet H, which is secured firmly to or forms part of mandrel A.
E E are set-screws, which pass through tapped lugs on the mandrel, and serve as gages to determine how far the cutters shall be entered into the tube.
The operation of the device is as follows: The cutters are withdrawn within the casing or mandrel, and the tool passed into the tube until the cutting-points d d are opposite the place Where the tube is to be out. Then, by turning the hand-wheel F, the rod 0 is drawn out, and by this movement the cutters D D are rocked on theirpivots and the points d d projected. Now, by turning the handle H the mandrel A is rotated and the cutters made to operate on the tube, and by continuing the expansion of these cutters the tube of ordinary thickness may be entirely severed.
The cutters points d [I should be curves struck from the center of the pivots of the cutters D D.
Instead of cutting-points (Z d, the cutters D may be armed with reamers.
hat I claim is- 1. The bored mandrel provided with screwthread, the threaded rod in said mandrel having projections which engage the cutters at each side of their pivots, and the cutters pivoted in the mandrel, so as to be operated positive] y in either direction by means of the screwrod engaging therewith, substantially as described.
2. The mandrel A, having screw-threaded axial aperture and cross-mortise, the two out ters in shape of bell-crank lovers pivoted in said mortise, the screwrod in the mandrel constructed, as described, to engage the ends of said lever-cutters, and mechanism, as described, for advancing and retracting said screw, all combined and arranged substantialy as shown and described.
