FIRE-ESCAPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,203, dated March 18, 1884. Application died December 19, 1883. (No model.)

v To on whom it may concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL ScrroLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in FireEscapes, of which the following is a specification.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of the block embodying my present improvement, with operating-ropes removed. Fig. 2 is also a plan view with operating-ropes in position. Fig. 3 is aside or edge view of the bloclr with suspending or operating rope removed. Fig. 4 is a view of the block with operating rope and sling in position. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of one end of the block.

Ihis invention is animprovement'in that class of fire-escapes for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me September 11, 1883; and it consists in the application of a sliding spring or staple to the upper and lower end of the block, to prevent the operating rope from being accidentally removed from the dead-eyes.

A represents the block, constructed with the transverse cuts and dead-eyes, in which the operating rope or cable is placed, as shown. Vertical holes B B are bored in each end of the block which receives the arms of a sliding spring staple or ring, Q. A square cut or notch is made in one arm of each of these sta pics, the length of which corresponds with the breadth of the transverse cut D, and a set-screw, E, enters the block and passes into the notch or cut and limits the movement of the spring-staple, and prevents the arms of the staple from being withdrawn from the block until the set-screw is loosened or removed.

It should here be observed that the setscrews and notches may be dispensed with when the spring-staple is constructed with sufficient expansive force to hold it in position within the holes or openings in the end of the block. By this means the operatingrope is held in place with more certainty. Should the rope or cable become crinkled and play out of the intermediate dead-eyes or transverse cuts, the two upper and two lower dead-eyes would always be reliable.

- Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. In a fire-escape, the combination, with the block A, having dead-eyes and transverse cuts, as shown, of the adjustable spring-staples C 0, attached to the opposite ends of said block, substantially as described.

2. In a fire-escape, the combination, with the block A, having dead-eyes and transverse cuts, of the spring-staples C G and set-screws .E E, substantially as shown and described.
