Be it known that I, CHARLES; H. KU'HNE, of But-ler, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usel'ul Improvements in Motors; and I do here- 1 ject is to provide a motor wherein dead-cen ters will be avoided; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the parts and combinations of parts` as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing represents my invention partly in longitudinal section and partly in sidefelevat-ion.
A represents the large cylinder, and B the small cylinder, of the motor. l rihese cylinders are preferably cast in a single piece, but, if
desired, may be cast separate and bolted together. The outer head, a, ofthe cylinderB may be cast integral with thecylinder; or the head may be detachable from the said cylinder, which is the preferred form of construction, as it givesthe ready access to the interior ofthe cylinder for the purpose of renewing the piston-packing; i

These pistons may be packed in any manner 1with either leather or metal packing. The piston rod C extends through the stating-box C', attached to the head G2 of cylinder A, ani-inlay be connected to the piston-rod of a pump, or to a ptman for actuating acrank-sbaft, or in any other desired manner to transmit the power to machines to be driven. l would have it understood that l nowise limit myself to the employment of my improvement for any particular purpose.
The cylinder B is provided with a port, B', nearits outer end,which connects with a steampassa-ge, b', formed in the cylinder in the process of casting` said passage b leading to and connecting with the port B2. Cylinder A is provided with a steam-passage, d, one end of which communicates with a port, d. The inner end of cylinder A is also provided with a port, e, which connects with the port e2.
Within the inner end of cylinder B is located a ring, E', which is provided at one side with a recess, F, said recessed ring constituting a slide-valve, as will hereinafter appear. The adjacent faces of the two pistons have each secured thereto a ring or washer, G. These washers come in Contact with the ring E and shift it at the termination of each stroke of the pistons. l
H is a pipe provided with a throttlevalve, I, for regulating the supply of steam, air, or duid for regulating the motor. This pipe is provided with a T-coupling, J, from one arm of which cxtendsa pipe, K, that leads to the outer end of the cylinder B. To the other arm of the coupling J is connected apipe, y',which is always exposed to the action of the live i steam, and large piston n, connected bythe rod in. This differential piston is upheld by the spiral spring 0, which may be inserted and adjusted by means ofthe nut P. Y
The operation of the motor is, briefly, as follows:4 `Then the parts are in the position shown 'inthe drawing, steam is admitted by opening the throttle, to the outer end of cylinder A, and through pipe K to the'outer end ol' cylinder B. Owing to the fact that the area ofthe piston D in the cylinder A is eonsiderable in excess of the area of piston E in cylinder B, the piston D in the large cylinder is driven toward its inner end until the washer G strikes thevring E', shifting it so that its recess F will connect the lports B2 d and allow the steam inthe outer end of cylinder B to flow through the port B', steam-passage t', port-B2, and recess F, port d', steampassage d, port dt into the upper end of valve-casing L, forcing the valve down until the lower and smaller piston, m, has descended below the steam-port d", thereby allowing steam-in the outer end of cylinder A to exhaust freely through the port d over the small piston m, and out through the `exhaast-pipe mi. As soon es the steam is IOO allowed to exhaust from the outer end of oylinder A, the steam will 'operate on the small piston E and drive both pistons in the opposite direction until the complet-ion of the return-stroke, when the washer on the small piston E shifts the valveE to the position shown in the drawing, which allows the steam be tween the large piston and the upper end of the valve-casing to exhaust through the port end of cylinder A,when the pistons are forced l in the opposite direction, as h'ereinbefore described.
From the foregoing it will be observed lthat f there are no deadcenters, and hence the motor can be started or stopped at any part of its stroke. Again, the construction of the motor is exceedingly simple and cheap, and thepa-rts are'so arranged as to insure certainty in its operati on.
-It is evident that slight changes in the construction and relative arrangement of the severa-l parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, and hence I would haveit understood thatI do not confine myself to the exact construction shown and described, but consider myself' at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lettersl Patent, is

The combination, with differential main pistons, a valve shifted by said pistons, and pipes for supplyingsteam to both pistons, of a differential valve connected with; the pipe which supplies steam to thelarge or mainpiston and adapted to regulate the exhaust and Acut off the supply of steam in the large piston, and a throttle-valvc situated beyond or outside of the two supply-pipes, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with differential cylinders and pistons, a sliding valve, and rings or washers for movingthe valve, ofa differential valve for cutting off the supply of steam inthe large piston and regulating the exhaust of both cylinders, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with differential cyliny ders and pistons,.the latter being provided with suitable Vrings or washers, the sliding valve, the steamsupply pipe, exhaust-passa ge F', the ports B', B, d', e2, e, cl2, and d, and steam-passages b cZ,-of the differential valve provided with the exhaust pipe mi, and adapted to cut off the supply of steam in th'e main piston and regulate the vexhaust of both cylinders, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination, with the pistons and cylinders, constructed as described, and the steam-supply pipes, of the differential valve connected wit-h the cylinders, as described, and
