- LINT SEALING ASSEMBLY FOR TEXTILE DRAFTING ROLLS Kenneth P. Swanson, 204 Chapel St., Abington, Mass.

2 Claims. (Cl. 19-142) This invention relates more particularly to anti-friction textile spinning rolls and especially to a novel lint sealing assembly adapted to preclude the entrance of lint and dust into the bearings supporting the rolls. The spinning roll assembly embodies tubular drawing rolls supported for rotation on an arbor and in accordance with my invention a novel lint sealing assembly is disposed on the arbor within each end of each roll. The lint sealing assembly includes an annular sealing member disposed within and having its periphery in continuous annular contact with the roll in a manner precluding entrance of dust and lint thereinto. In the preferred form of the invention the sealing member is in peripheral tight frictional engagement with the roll and extends into and is freely rotatable within a member supported on the arbor, thereby tightly sealing the roll at its ends without interfering with its free rotation on the arbor. The spinning roll assembly furthermore includes means for clamping the bearings and lint sealing assemblies into a fixed unit between supporting shoulders on the arbor. The production of a novel assembly of this nature and for the purpose described comprises the primary object of the invention.
These and other features of the invention are hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1 is an elevation of a top roll embodying the in vention,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section through one of the rolls,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged edge elevation, partially in section, of a lint sealing assembly,
Fig. 4 is a front elevation thereof,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a clamping unit assembly, and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a ball bearing assembly.
The novel top roll assembly shown in the drawing includes an arbor preferably embodying a shaft 10 with a sleeve 12 loose thereon. The shaft projects from each end of the sleeve and provides a cylindrical roll supporting portion between each reduced threaded end 14 of the arbor and an outwardly facing shoulder 16 at the adjacent end of the sleeve. Each drawing roll supported on the :arbor comprises a tubular member 18 carrying the usual cot 20.
The tubular member 18 is rotatably supported on two ball bearing assemblies 22, each including a sleeve 24 disposed to fit the shaft 10. Each such assembly embodies two annular ball races 26 on the sleeve and including balls 28 for rotatably supporting the members 18. i The two innermost ball races are adapted to engage an annular rib 30 integral with the member 18.
Each top roll assembly shown in Fig. 2 includes two sleeves 24 in end abutting contact, a lint sealing assembly 32 on the shaft between and in abutting contact with the shoulder 16 and the inner end of the inner sleeve 24, and a like lint sealing assembly disposed coaxially of the shaft between and in abutting contact with the outer end 2 of the outer sleeve and a clamping nut 34 threaded to the reduced end 14 of the shaft. The clamping nut is adapted to bind these elements into a fixed unit between the nut and the shoulder 16.
The lint sealing assembly comprises a member recessed annularly at 36 at its periphery and preferably constructed of two outer metal washers 38 of equal diameters disposed at opposite faces of an inner metal washer 40 of smaller diameter, the washers being spot welded at 42 into a unit. Disposed within the recess 36 between the two washers 38 is an annular sealing member 44 of suitable composition, such as vulcanized fibre or nylon, the member 44 being coaxial with the washers 38 and in the preferred form of the invention this member is of a thickness permitting free rotation within the recess and of a diameter slightly greater than the washers 38 and adapted tightly to engage and rotate with the tubular member 18 when inserted thereinto.
As illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5, each nut 34 preferably has a lint sealing assembly 32 permanently combined therewith into a clamping nut assembly. The nut is provided with a reduced cylindrical portion 46 at its inner end for receiving the assembly 32 and is peened over at 48 to form an annular shoulder for retaining the assembly on the nut.
It will now be apparent that the shaft 10 and sleeve 12 provide an arbor with a roll supporting cylindrical end portion projecting outwardly beyond each end of the sleeve and that the sleeve provides an outwardly facing annular shoulder at the inner end of each cylindrical portion. Each top roll assembly is assembled on the arbor merely by sliding the units 32, 22 and 18 thereon and clamping the sleeves 24 and members 32 into a fixed unit by and between the nuts 34. The members 18 are freely rotatable on the ball races and the sealing units 32 seal the ends of the members and prevent the entrance of lint or dust into the bearings. No adjustment other than the tightening of the nuts 34 is required and the assembly can be as conveniently and quickly disassembled and reassembled whenever repair or other requirements demand.
Having thus disclosed my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a top roll assembly for textile drafting machines, an arbor having a cylindrical end portion and including means providing an annular and coaxial outwardly facing shoulder at the inner end of said portion and a stud integral with and projecting outwardly beyond the free end of said portion, a ball bearing assembly including balls disposed in annular ball races on and about a sleeve assembly coaxial with and fitting said end portion of the arbor, a tubular drawing roll disposed coaxially over said portion and supported on the balls in said races, two annular dust sealing members disposed coaxially about the arbor within and respectively adjacent to the ends of the roll and having their peripheries in continuous frictional engagement therewith, two annular assemblies coaxial with the arbor and respectively in abutting relation with the inner and outer ends of the sleeve assembly, each of said two assemblies having its periphery disposed adjacent to but not contacting the roll and having an annular gap therein receiving the adjacent sealing member for free rotation therein, and a clamping member on said stud binding said two assemblies and the sleeve assembly into a fixed unit between the clamping member and said shoulder.
2. The top roll assembly defined in claim 1 in which the arbor comprises a shaft with a theaded stud of reduced diameter at each end thereof, a continuous cylindrical portion therebetween corresponding to said cylindrical end portion and a sleeve loose thereon itermediately between the studs and providing two outwardly facing shoulders at the inne; ends of two like cylindrical end portions, sa id two like cylindrical portions each having said ball bearing and sleeveassembly and said two annular assemblies thereon and, two nuts on the two studs for clamping said annular assemblies, the sleeve assemblies andsaid sleeve info a fixed unit-therehetween.
