1 Claim. (Cl. 2-198) thus avoidin laundering or other renovation of the article.
Another object of this invention is to provide a paper cap, or other similar article, which constitutes an improvement upon the construction disclosed in US. Patent No. 2,727,246, issued December 20, 1955.
In the cap article disclosed in said Patent No. 2,727,246, the article is adapted to be secured to the head of the wearer thereof by means of a resilient U-shaped hooplike securing member normally concealed in the folds of the article. The resilient construction and the mounting of the securing member provide for the same to apply sufficient pressure to the sides of the head of the wearer to retain the paper article in its operative position. However, wearing of such device produced physical discomfort, especially after long periods of wear, due to the pressure developed thereby on the sides of the head of the person wearing the device.
Accordingly, it is an additional object of this inventlon to provide a paper cap or other similar article having the desirable general characteristics indicated above but also being so designed that it can be securely fastened on the head of the wearer by the use of ordinary bobby pins or other hair pins which are out of sight, thereby eliminating any physical discomfort which would result from the use of securing members which actually apply pressure to the head but still providing for an attractive head dress.
A further understanding of the invention will result from reference to the following description and the attached drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the blank from which the article of head wear comprising the present invention is formed with the crown flap folded inwardly.
Figure 2 is a detail of one end of the blank showing an initial fold in forming a tab which is used in attaching the article of head wear by a hair pin to the head.
Figure 3 is a similar view but showing the final folded operative position of the attaching tab.
Figure 4 is 'a top perspective view taken of the final condition of the head wear preparatory to applying it to the head.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 5-5 ure 1, the improved article of head wear, accordin to 2,947,992 Patented Aug. 9, 1960 "ice band disposed for engagement with the sides of the wearers head. Also formed integrally with the band 10 is a positioning crown flap 12 which is folded over the inside of the band 11 and will rest on the top of the wearers head when the article is worn. The front or top portion 13 of the crown band and the flap 12 will, in the final article, extend upwardly and angularlly with respect to the hinge line 13a.
According to the present invention, the free ends of the sides 11 are provided with a novel attaching double tab by means of which the band 10 can be attached to the head. For this purpose, the inner edge of each side 11 of the blank (Figure 1) is provided with a transversely extended side flange or extension 15 which extends from the band end, a substantial distance inwardly to the straight edge 17. A longitudinally extending score line 18 is provided between each flange 15 and the associated side 11 and a transverse score line 19 is provided within the outer end of the band and the flange and defines thereon an inwardly foldable end tab 16.
In folding each end of the band to provide the desired securing tab thereon, the end tab 16 of the band is folded upwardly and inwardly at the score line 19, into overlapping relationship with the end of the band and with the remainder of the flange. Then the remainder or outer end portion of the flange 15 is folded upwardly and inwardly along the scoreline 18, as indicated in Figure 3, it is being apparent that the flange 15 is now of double thickness adjacent its outer end. This will provide the upwardly extending attaching flange 15a, on each end of the band, which will be of double thickness: at its extreme outer end due to the provision of the inwardly folded flange portion 15b disposed between the flange portion 15a and the adjacent side 11. Also extending outwardly from the inner edge of the flange portion 15b will be the hinged flange portion or end section 11a which will be connected at its inner edge along the score line 18 to the inner edge of the flange portion 15b and to the outer end of the side 11 at the hinged score line 19.
In positioning this article on the head of the wearer, it is merely necessary to fold the blank as indicated above and then to curve the band into U-form, as indicated in Figure 4. The band is slipped downwardly over the head until the inwardly disposed crown flap 12 engages the hair firmly. The ends 11 will extend down over the sides of the head and these ends can be secured to the hair by means of bobby clips passed inwardly over the outer end of the double tab construction as shown at B in Figure 4. The tabs 15a will tend to spring inwardly towards the head and they will be of double reinforced construction. The inner part of each bobby pin will extend into the hair and the outer part will be in the fold between the tab 15a and the hand side 11. Therefore, the boby pins B will be completely out of sight.
It will be apparent from the above that this invention provides for a reinforced attaching tab structure on the ends of a substantially U-shaped article of head wear which will receive bobby pins or other pins for attaching the article to the head. The attaching means used can be ordinary bobby pins or hair pins, as indicated, which will be completely out of sight. Therefore, the head wear is not only adequately secured to the head without discomfort but is of an attractive appearance on the head.
Various other advantages will be apparent.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed is:
An article of head wear consisting of an integral, one- 3 pi'ce'body of'fie'xible sheetmaterial of generally U-shaped configuration formed to provide a substantially upstanding crown section adapted to be positioned upon the head of a wearer and terminating in opposite side portions adapted to bedisposed'at the sides of the head of the wearer; each of said side portions te'rrninatingin a ir'iultiple fold end portion including a transversely extenaedside flange connected to said side portionby alongitiidi'nally disposed fold'line, and an end tahforming a-longit'udinal o'ntinu'ati'on of said side portion and said side flange and joined to said side portion and said side flange along a transversely disposed fold line; said end tab being folded longitudinally inwardly upon said side portion and said References Cited inthe file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 999,569 Lauer Aug. 1, 1911 1,576,959 Mar. 16, 1926 2,447,215 haw-n.
