SPOOLED MARKET-WIRE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,740, dated March 4, 1884.

1'0 all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. MALIN, of

Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State spooled market-wire as an article of manufacture; and it consists in the manner in which it is wound upon the spools and kept from rusting, all of which is hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

Wire made of the ordinary materials for wire makingand forgeneral useisknowntothetrade as market-wire. Heretofore this wire has been kept for sale only in large coils or bales, that were bulky, easily tangled, and in every way inconvenient for consumers that only want ed a small quanty of assorted wire for immediate use or to keep on hand for general use.

The object of my invention is to furnish the different sizes of this wire wound snugly on spools of convenient size, so that they may be kept on hand like spools of thread for general use. ire soon oxidizes or rusts by exposure to the atmosphere, and as, after a quantity of goods are made, a considerable time must elapse before the goods are all in the handset the consumer and used, many of the goods would rust and be spoiled; This would so increase the cost to the consumer that it would be a serious hinderanceto theindustry of making the goods. To obviate this difficulty I have devised a manner of winding the wire in In the drawing, the figure is a perspective of a spool of wire embodying my invention.

A represents aspool, around which is wound the wire B, with the coils pressed firmly together 1aterally,so as to exclude the passage of air between the coils, while the outside layer, and all of the layers, if so desired, are coated with shellac or other substance to keep the wire from rustin g.

Spools of different sizes may be made containing a given number of yards or pounds, as the trade may require, and thus supply a general want.

\Vhat I claim is- A spool of market-wire having the outer layer of wire covered or coated with shellac or other suitable substances to protect the wire of the outer layer and prevent the ingress of air or dampness to the inner layers, substantially as set forth.
