UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARMON H. FULTON, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE INDIANAPOLIS MACHINE AND BOLT IVORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
WHEEL OR PULLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,730, dated March 4, 1884.
Application filed January 14, 1884. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARMON H. FULTON, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVheels or Pulleys, of which the following is a specifica- 1 tion.
My present invention consists in constructing a wheel or pulley composed of a suitable hub and rim and a web composed of two separate corrugated sheetqnetal plates bent inwardly until they meet in the center, as will be presently more fully described.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of referenceindicate similar parts, Figure l is a side elevation of a wheel or pulley embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof on the dotted line z'z. I
In said drawings, the portions marked A represeht the shaft on whichthe wheel or pulley is mounted; B, the hub; O O, the disks forming the web, and D the rim. The shaft A and rim D are not different from like portions of well-known similar devices, and will not therefore be further described. The hub B consist-s of a main part having a flange and a ring or collar adapted to slip over the end of the hub, and corresponding to the flange when in place. The inner sides of the flange and of the collar are corrugated to fit the corrugated sheet-metal web, and the corrugations on one being formed to fit into the other are adapted to clamp the web tightly, as shown, when said web is placed between them. The disks 0 O are separately similar to the single disk forming the web in the Letters Patent .able Where great strength combined with light No. 278,425, dated May 28, 1883, except that these disks are dished or hollowing, and thus adapted to be attached to the outer edges of the rim, while coming close together in the center, thereby supporting said outer edges, bracing the pulley rigidly, and utilizing a hub of the simplest construction and of only two parts. Thesedisks are secured to the rim D by the usual ears, 0, and rivets (Z, or in any other suitable manner.
My improved wheel or pulley is very desir weight is required, as in case of mowing-machine and traction-engine wheels, large friction-pulleys, &c.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wheel or pulley composed of a hub, a rim, and a web, said web being composed of two corrugated sheet-metal disksformeddished or hollowing, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination, with the hub and rim of a wheel or pulley, of a web consisting of two corrugated disks, 0 O, brought together in the center, where they are joined to the hub, 6 5 and spread outwardly at the outer edge, Where they are joined to the rim at or near its edges, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this In presence of-- O. BRADFORD, E. XV. BRADFORD.
