Be it known that I, MARTIN LUTHER RUS- SELL, a subject of the Queen of Great Brit'- ain, and a resident of Renfrew, in the county of Renfrew and Province of Ontario, Canada,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Tightening Cables and Machine-Belts; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being. had to the accompanying drawings,

My invention has relation to devices for 2 5 tightening cables and machine-belts; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A repreo sents the pulley-wheel, through which motion is conveyed from the source of power; and B p B represent the journal-boxes in'which the ends of the shaft upon which the said pulleywheel is supported revolve. These journal- 3 5 boxes are adj ustably secured upon blocks 0 C,
being provided on their lower sides with guide blocks D D, which slide within grooves E E,
extending longitudinally upon the upper side of the blocks 0 O, and also with downwardly- 0 projecting pieces F F, provided with screwthreaded apertures F F, for the purpose hereinafter specified.
G G represent screws, which work in suitable bearings upon the blocks 0 0, each screw being journaled longitudinally and centrally upon that face or side of the blocks 0 0 uponwhich are the longitudinal grooves E E, and passing through the screw-threaded apertures F F in the downwardly-proj ecting pieces F F,
previously referred to. By turning these screws the journal-boxes B B, and thereby the pulley-wheel A, can be drawn to any desired distance from the source of power, thereby keeping the drive-belt tight and in running order.
Upon one end of thejpulley-wheel shaft A is secured a bevel-pinion, H,'adapted to mesh with a similar bevel-pinion, I, secured upon a shaft, J. This shaft J works in journalboxes K K, and has upon one of its extremities a pinion, L, adapted to communicate power to any point through any suitable system of shafts and pinions, and is provided with a longitudinal groove or recess, M, for the purpose hereinafter set forth. The pinion I, with which the bevel-pinion H meshes, is adjustably secured upon that part of the shaft J lying between the journal-boxes K K by having a key, N, passing through a collar, I, upon one side of the said pinion, adapted to fit with its lower end within the longitudinal groove M. By this arrangement the bevelpinion I can be moved horizontally upon the shaft J, so as to continue to mesh with the pinion H on the end of the pulley-wheel shaft A when the said pulley-wheel is moved for the purpose of tightening the drive-belt, as before stated.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of my improved device for tightening cables and machine-belts will readily be understood without requiring further explanation.
It will be seen that my improved device is simple in construction, and, being devoid of all complicated mechanism, is not liable to get out of order. By its use cables and machine belts can readily be kept tight and in operative position.
